FramedBlocks by XFactHD adds placeholder blocks in various forms which can absorb textures from blocks you put in them.
This mod has also signs with this feature.
When I place down a Framed Sign it does not open the color GUI.
It would be nice if it does.
I wrote another post on the other author's github since I don't know which author has to change something on their code.
