MonitorControl has a commit called v4.3.4 from roughly four months ago, but no official update has been pushed. In v4.3.3, released roughly 2 years ago, the author recommends switching to BetterDisplay.
While the MonitorControl repo is not explicitly abandoned or archived, it appears that development has slowed down and potentially stopped, with only critical bug fixes happening in response to new major macOS versions, and even then, not very quickly (see the open issues tracker regarding macOS 26 Tahoe problems).
Therefore, review BetterDisplay and MonitorControl forks (e.g. BetterMonitor and others) to determine a suitable alternative. The end goal is to be able to control external monitor brightness as well as volume, since macOS does not offer native, automatic, support for either. For example, when the brightness level changes enough to change the Apple-native display's brightness, attached displays should match it if possible. For volume control, Apple explicitly disables macOS-native control when connected to an external audio device; assuming you can control volume there, but it would be nice to at least be able to mute audio from macOS, even if I can't change the volume from the keyboard. Under Advanced Controls, MonitorControl does allow this, and it is something I would like to keep.
Any recommendation should come with backing documentation, and if it is open-source, at least a cursory security review.
