Code of Conduct

Our pledge

We are building WFL to make programming more readable, approachable, and humane. We pledge to make participation in the WebFirst Language project a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, caste, color, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.

We also pledge not to discriminate against people for using AI tools as part of their work. WFL itself was built with AI assistance. See AI_POLICY.md.

Our standards

Examples of behavior that contributes to a positive environment

  • Being kind, patient, and constructive — especially with beginners
  • Focusing on what is best for the language, users, and long-term maintainability
  • Giving and gracefully accepting constructive feedback
  • Assuming good intent; asking clarifying questions before escalating
  • Crediting others’ work and respecting license and attribution requirements
  • Keeping security reports private until a fix is coordinated (SECURITY.md)
  • Writing clear issues and PRs so others can help

Examples of unacceptable behavior

  • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination of any kind
  • Sexualized language or imagery, and unwelcome sexual attention
  • Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
  • Public or private harassment
  • Publishing others’ private information without explicit permission
  • Dismissing or attacking someone because their contribution involved AI tools (see AI_POLICY.md)
  • Knowingly submitting malware, credential theft, or supply-chain sabotage
  • Sustained disruption of discussions, issues, or review processes
  • Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional open-source setting

Scope

This Code of Conduct applies within all project spaces, including:

  • The GitHub organization, repositories, issues, PRs, discussions, and wikis
  • Official project communication channels (email listed for the project, etc.)
  • Official events or meetings when representing the project

It also applies when an individual is officially representing the project in public spaces.

Enforcement responsibilities

Project Maintainers are responsible for clarifying and enforcing this Code of Conduct. They may remove, edit, or reject comments, commits, code, wiki edits, issues, and other contributions that are not aligned with this Code, and will communicate reasons for moderation decisions when appropriate.

Maintainers who do not follow or enforce the Code of Conduct in good faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other Maintainers or the copyright holder (Logbie LLC).

Reporting

Report unacceptable behavior to:

Include as much detail as you can (links, screenshots, dates, what happened). Reports will be handled as confidentially as practical. Retaliation against good-faith reporters is itself a Code of Conduct violation.

Enforcement guidelines

Maintainers will use judgment proportional to the impact:

Level Example Possible consequence
1 — Correction Inappropriate language or unprofessional tone Private warning; request to edit or delete
2 — Warning Single clear violation or repeated minor issues Public or private warning; temporary interaction limits
3 — Temporary ban Serious or sustained violation Temporary ban from project spaces
4 — Permanent ban Pattern of abuse, harassment, or sabotage Permanent ban; possible removal of Collaborator access

These levels are guidance, not a rigid ladder. Severe cases (threats, doxxing, malware) may jump to temporary or permanent ban immediately.

Technical disagreement is not misconduct

Strong technical disagreement, blunt code review, and insistence on project policies (tests, docs, backward compatibility, the No-Unlearning Invariant) are not Code of Conduct violations when delivered without personal attacks or harassment. Maintainers may still moderate volume or tone if it becomes disruptive.

Attribution

This Code of Conduct is adapted from the spirit of the Contributor Covenant (version 2.1), customized for the WFL project’s maintainer-led governance and explicit AI inclusion policy.
