Close an app with right click + close

Problem

Close an app with right click + close does not exist in this new version of Dock anymore.

I have no idea about what design choices could lead to the removal of right click + close.

When we did our UI survey, closing windows via the dock was the least popular option, even less popular than closing them via multitasking view. Closing via keyboard shortcut was twice as popular.

Since the move to Wayland anything that constitutes window management needs special API in Gala, so any window management features we can avoid makes things simpler and more reliable.

There is however a related, required branch in Gala that would make it possible to re-add this feature elementary/gala#2202

Personally I think if we bring this back it should be part of the window switcher section of the UI and not part of the regular launcher part of the UI. We don't necessarily get window titles that disambiguate between specific windows very well, so at least being able to see which window from which desktop you're closing might help that. I'm not a huge fan of a menu item that closes all windows/ends the whole process as proposed in #278

Another advantage of this feature: it allows to close multiple instances of the same app at once

I think a lot of people use the dock for managing windows too. There's valid reasons to close windows without actually switching to it. Plus the default leave action of the alt+tab switcher is to switch windows which I may not want to do.

To add some use cases where this functionality would have been useful:

• I had an app going into a sort of broken state where the window was transparent and not clickable. Without this option I had no way to close the app and I had to use the system monitor.
• In another case a popup to import Calendar events opened after clicking on an ics file. It didn't accept the "Cancel" option, leaving the popup open and again requiring terminating it from the system monitor.
• I used to use it to close all windows from the same app, which now requires to focus it and hit the right keyboard shortcut.

The system monitor routes is not just a nuisance. It requires multiple actions to complete and specific knowledge (the monitor app exists, can be used for this purpose and how to use it), versus 2 clicks following an established pattern across other OSes.
I understand it may be the least preferred way to close an app, but there are legitimate use case and expectations behind it.

On the design side, what would be required? Adding the option as it was in the previous dock feels the correct design decision here.

It's been a year and I still haven't gotten used to this feature being missing and I've yet to understand the argument behind removing the feature in the first place
