Configurable Settings

Overview

Most of the settings for the discord bot are hard-coded in the constants.py file. Although not difficult to edit, any setting that we might want to change requires a decent amount of effort. It could be beneficial to have a button/command to bring up a list of configurable settings to change.

Settings that we might want to change include things such as what the bot expects channel names to be and whether voice alerts should be enabled.

Look to the old help queue for ideas on what else we might want to change.

Here are settings I see in DBConnect.php and whether they would be relevant, and other settings ideas I had while I examined the code:

Already Implemented:

• queueActive (whether queue is active)

Not Neccessary:

• TA Broadcast message (can be done with an "@everyone")
• course Title (not necessary to change or display, it's in the name of the discord server

Future Work:

• student/TA poll intervals (currently happens during every measurable event and hardcoded to refresh every minute - this means that they should be updated in real time but will fall back on being updated every minute in case there is something that doesn't trigger a bot event like a TA joining a voice channel)
• Notify threshold (what position in line a student should be before being notified that they are close to being helped - currently hardcoded to 1)
• passoff highlight color (doable in discord but a bit awkward, you'd have to use something like this discord text color tool)
• last X min (time window for stats, currently the queue uses last number of entries rather than minutes)
• requireQuestion (whether a question is mandatory, currently hardcoded as True)

Other ideas:

• whether voice alerts should happen
• how often voice alerts should happen
• passoff days

Another configurable setting that could be useful is a queue shutdown button or date that prevents the bot from turning on during the semester
