document running a forward-deployed Agent Relay agent on Freestyle
keep Relay and model credentials out of reusable VM snapshots
prevent cloned nodes from sharing a baked machine identity
document pause/resume behavior and bounded dev/test lifecycles
Verification

Provenance
The guidance is based on a dev-only proof using two VMs cloned from one clean snapshot. Both joined the same hosted Relay workspace with distinct node IDs; pause transitioned one node offline, and resume returned it online with the same identity. No credentials or VM identifiers are included in this change.

Summary by cubic
Adds a guide for hosting the answering agent on a Freestyle VM so it stays online without a laptop.
Covers keeping Relay and model credentials out of reusable snapshots and injecting them at runtime.
Documents removing broker machine-id and token state before capturing a snapshot to prevent cloned nodes from colliding on node id (provider_instance_conflict).
Notes the current Freestyle SDK /v5 API requirement (older /v1 packages return 401) and pause/resume behavior with lifecycle bounds for dev/test VMs.
Requires Agent Relay 11.3.1 or later, since earlier versions print the workspace key during node up.
Written for commit 089422a. Summary will update on new commits.

Walkthrough
The documentation adds instructions for running a forward-deployed answering agent on a Freestyle VM. It covers setup, broker identity, verification, and VM lifecycle behavior.
Changes: Freestyle VM Deployment Guide
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Document the Freestyle VM deployment procedure web/content/docs/forward-deployed-agents.mdx
The guide specifies SDK and API versions, credential handling, harness authentication, broker identity setup, startup and verification, and pause, resume, and lifecycle behavior.
Cloning the startup command gives each VM the same broker name. Parameterize it before relying on the guide for deployments; the remaining risk is bounded.

A rabbit reads the setup guide, Then checks each broker’s node ID. It keeps the secrets out of sight, And starts the agent just right. The VM can pause, resume, and rest, While clones keep identities distinct.

🔴 Published agent stays offline after startup
On a fresh VM, --no-spawn starts the broker without its configured answering agent. The public address remains unanswered until someone starts that agent separately.
Learn more
The broker serves and routes agents, but --no-spawn disables its configured auto-spawn behavior. The broker lifecycle guide confirms this flag prevents agents from spawning from config. The fresh VM begins from a snapshot captured after stopping the builder broker, and the startup instructions contain no step to launch an answering agent. A running broker alone cannot answer visitors at the published address.
Example: A builder has an answering Claude agent configured for automatic startup. After a clone boots and runs the listed command, its broker connects but Claude never starts; visitors receive no answer.
Recommended fix: Either remove --no-spawn and document the configuration required to auto-start the answering agent, or add an explicit agent launch and registration step after broker startup. Verify the answering agent is online and reachable through the published handle.

Fixed in 089422a: startup now uses --spawn, requires the answering agent in the broker startup configuration, and explicitly verifies reachability through the published handle.

🟨 Older Relay installs expose workspace keys
When an agent runs node up on Relay 11.3.0 or earlier, the command prints the injected workspace key. A transcribed setup session then captures that credential.

Require a patched Relay version before starting the broker
If the reusable snapshot contains Agent Relay 11.3.0 or earlier, this command prints the injected workspace key into its output, exposing it when provisioning runs in an agent transcript or captured log. This guide neither requires a patched Relay client nor includes the version-aware warning documented in security/agent-relay-11.3.0-credential-exposure.md. Require Agent Relay 11.3.1 or later before this step, or direct older installations to a trusted, non-transcribed human terminal. Root AGENTS.md explicitly establishes this version boundary and execution restriction.

- Around line 105-107: Update the startup snippet in the guide to pass a per-VM
broker name to `agent-relay node up` instead of the fixed `freestyle-node`
value, and require each VM to set `BROKER_NAME` at runtime.
