Overview

This PR adds a shared Consultation Message Thread UI used by both patients (appointment detail page) and doctors (consultation context). It renders the backend's append-only message log as an ordered, dependable thread with cursor-paginated history, an optimistic composer with failed/retry states, live updates via the notification stream (falling back to polling while visible), and a closed-thread state.

Changes

💬 Messaging Feature

  • [ADD] src/features/messaging/components/MessageThread.tsx

    • Renders messages in chronological order, text-only (no HTML), with safe linkification.
    • Loads older messages via cursor pagination ("load older" affordance).
    • Shows per-message sending / failed / retry states and a closed-thread banner when the backend closes the thread.
  • [ADD] src/features/messaging/components/MessageComposer.tsx

    • In-memory draft only (no localStorage, per the repo storage rule for PHI).
    • Send action with disabled state while a send is in flight; surfaces failure for retry.
  • [ADD] src/features/messaging/components/MessageThread.module.css

    • Layout and state styling for the thread, composer, and closed state.
  • [ADD] src/features/messaging/hooks/useMessageThread.ts

    • Owns thread state: paginated history, optimistic append, failure/retry, closed state.
    • Subscribes to the notification stream for live updates when available; otherwise polls while the thread is visible.
  • [ADD] src/services/messaging-service.ts

    • API access for fetching paginated history and sending messages, routed through docforum-core's API per the architecture hard rules.
  • [MODIFY] src/types/models.ts

    • Added message/thread types mirroring docforum-core's models (assumed shape documented below).

Thanks for taking this on. The design is right: in-memory drafts, text-only rendering, and polling only while the tab is visible. It isn't in a mergeable state yet, though, and the verification section doesn't match the code:

Blocking

  1. It doesn't compile. CI fails at MessageComposer.tsx:88: {isSending ? 'Sending…& : 'Send'} has a broken string literal (TS1005). The PR description says typecheck, tests and build all passed, but they can't have on this commit. Please run npm run typecheck && npm test && npm run build locally and paste the real output.
  2. The link regex is invalid. const URL_REGEX = /\(https?:\/\/[^\s<>()]+)/gi; escapes the opening paren but not the closing one, which is an unmatched ). That's a SyntaxError when the module loads, so the whole thread view would crash. Use something like /https?:\/\/[^\s<>()]+/gi, and keep the http(s)-only protocol restriction.
  3. MessageThread type replaced. main's MessageThread, used by the doctor inbox (patientName, unreadCount, lastPreview, waitingMinutes, closingSoon), is overwritten with a different shape. That breaks DoctorInbox the same way feat(messaging): message attachments — upload with progress, preview and secure download (#23) #135 does. The diff also deletes unrelated lines in models.ts (the "Acting-for profile" section header and a closing }), which looks like a bad conflict resolution. Please restore those and give the consultation thread its own type, or merge the two shapes into one.
  4. No tests. The acceptance table lists tests for pagination, optimistic send, failure/retry and the closed state, but the PR adds no test files. Please add them.
  5. Rebase needed. The branch is 1 commit behind main and conflicts in src/types/models.ts, ROADMAP.md and ARCHITECTURE_ESSENTIALS.md.

Once CI is green and the branch is rebased, I'll review again.

This PR has merge conflicts with main, which has moved on since this branch was created. Please rebase onto the latest main (or merge main into your branch), resolve the conflicts, and push. CI will then re-run, and the PR can be merged once it's conflict-free, CI is green and it's been reviewed. Thanks!

@Bolubillions1 Thanks for the PR. It can't be merged yet. To unblock it:

CI is failing. Here's what broke:

Frontend (typecheck + test + build):

src/features/messaging/components/MessageComposer.tsx(88,38): error TS1005: ':' expected.
src/features/messaging/components/MessageComposer.tsx(88,43): error TS1381: Unexpected token. Did you mean `{'}'}` or `}`?

Please fix these errors and run the same steps locally before pushing (npm run typecheck && npm test && npm run build, or cargo test for contracts).

Merge conflicts: this branch conflicts with main. Please rebase onto the latest main (git fetch upstream && git rebase upstream/main), resolve the conflicts (often ROADMAP.md, ARCHITECTURE*.md or prisma/schema.prisma), and force-push.

Push to this same branch and CI will re-run. Once it's green and conflict-free, it'll be reviewed for merge.

@Bolubillions1 This PR now has merge conflicts with main, most likely because #185 (Implement patient orders, doctor intake/consultation, and facility fulfillment flows (#5-#8)) was just merged, so it can't be merged until it's rebased:

git fetch upstream # upstream = https://github.com/DocForum/docforum-web.git
git rebase upstream/main
# resolve the conflicts, re-run the tests, then:
git push --force-with-lease

The usual culprits are shared files like ROADMAP.md and ARCHITECTURE*.md. CI re-runs when you push, and the needs-rebase label is removed automatically once the conflicts are resolved.

Automated message. It won't repeat unless the PR conflicts again after your next push.

@Bolubillions1 This PR now has merge conflicts with main, most likely because #190 (feat(search): search across my own records) was just merged, so it can't be merged until it's rebased:

Message now requires senderRole, so add it to the test fixtures in MessageComposer.test.tsx. MessageThread.tsx:20 has a stray ) and line 252 uses senderId, which OptimisticMessage doesn't have. useMessageThread.ts needs its useInfiniteQuery typed, with pageParam and data.pages. Run npm run typecheck locally.

@Bolubillions1 This PR now has merge conflicts with main, most likely because #157 (feat(platform): complete W7 API client, errors, PWA, and i18n) was just merged, so it can't be merged until it's rebased:

@Bolubillions1 CI is failing at npm run typecheck (and the Browser job fails as a result):

src/features/messaging/components/MessageComposer.test.tsx(46,63): error TS2741: Property 'senderRole' is missing in type '{ id; threadId; senderProfileId; body; attachments; createdAt }'
src/features/messaging/components/MessageThread.tsx(2,10): error TS6133: 'Spinner' is declared but its value is never read.
src/features/messaging/components/MessageThread.tsx(20,43): error TS1508: Unexpected ')'. Did you mean to escape it with backslash?
src/features/messaging/components/MessageThread.tsx(252,60): error TS2339: Property 'senderId' does not exist on type 'OptimisticMessage'.
src/features/messaging/hooks/useMessageThread.ts(116,9): error TS18046: 'pageParam' is of type 'unknown'.
src/features/messaging/hooks/useMessageThread.ts(153,34): error TS2339: Property 'pages' does not exist on type 'NoInfer<MessagePage>'.

MessageThread.tsx has a syntax error on line 20, the Message type gained senderRole on main (so the test fixtures need it), and useMessageThread needs useInfiniteQuery typing (initialPageParam, InfiniteData<MessagePage>). Please fix, run npm run typecheck && npm test, and push.
