Description
Epic: POS feature roadmap — build shared foundations once, then reuse them across POS/kiosk/customer display.
Why this ordering
Features below share foundations (pricing, inventory, payment, catalog). Doing them in the wrong order means rewriting pricing/inventory/payment/POS repeatedly. The domain primitives come first; kiosk becomes "another frontend over the same battle-tested services."
Phase 1 — Financial correctness
- Feature: Shift lifecycle management, cash drawer reconciliation, & business day close #279 Shift lifecycle / cash drawer reconciliation (existing).
- Financials: Implement idempotent refund system & fix partial refund over-collection #278 Idempotent refund system (existing).
- Architecture: Central pricing/adjustment service & financial ledger boundary #369 Central pricing/adjustment service & financial ledger boundary (new foundation).
- Integration: audit/refund/day-close.
Phase 2 — Quick operational improvements
- Feature: Touchscreen-first POS UX (cross-cutting standard) #368 Touchscreen-first POS UX audit (cross-cutting standard; start now).
- Feature: Floorplan editor for tables (drag & drop visual map) #356 Floorplan editor (nearly a free win — data model already exists).
Phase 3 — Catalog/inventory foundation
- Feature: Real product variants (variant groups/options with SKU, barcode, price delta, optional stock) #357 Product variants (real variant groups/options; SKU/barcode/price/stock).
- Feature: Inventory for add-ons (stock, low-stock, transactional deduct/restore) #358 Add-on stock (transactional deduct/restore).
- Feature: Weighted products & scale-generated barcodes (electronic scale, stage 1) #365 Weighted products & scale-generated barcodes (stage 1).
Phase 4 — Pricing and tender
- Feature: Promotion engine with coupons as one mechanism #359 Promotion engine with coupons as one mechanism.
- Feature: Gift cards as a payment/liability ledger (not a discount) #363 Gift cards as a payment/liability ledger.
- (Ties into Architecture: Central pricing/adjustment service & financial ledger boundary #369 pricing service and Feature: Append-only product inventory movement ledger & history API (shipped) #280 inventory movement ledger.)
Phase 5 — Order orchestration
- Feature: Scheduled orders with release semantics #360 Scheduled orders with release semantics.
- Feature: Multi-counter ordering flow (create here, pay there) #361 Multi-counter ordering flow (checkout_stage separate from kitchen status).
Phase 6 — Customer interaction
- Feature: Customer-facing display on a second monitor #362 Customer-facing display on a second monitor.
- Feature: Tipping (separate tip_amount, customer-facing selection) #364 Tipping (separate tip_amount).
Phase 7 — Advanced menu
- Feature: Combos as real bundles (component slots, not add-ons) #366 Combos as real bundles (after variants/pricing).
Phase 8 — Hardware expansion
- Stage 2 of Feature: Weighted products & scale-generated barcodes (electronic scale, stage 1) #365: direct USB/HID/serial scale support.
Phase 9 — Kiosk
- Feature: Self-service kiosk (separate /kiosk surface, restricted API boundary) #367 Self-service kiosk (separate restricted surface; reuses everything above).
Tracking
Each feature issue carries its own acceptance criteria, codebase grounding, and dependencies. Refunds (#278) and shifts (#279) are already open; this epic links the remaining roadmap.
