fix(agents): tailor parent wake text to delivered kind (#2384) - #2386
When a parent session is idle and Gentle delivers something to it, gentle-agents stores the payload and wakes the parent session with one hidden message whose text was always:
constNATIVE_PARENT_WAKE_TEXT="Review the delivered subagent output and continue.";
Because sendToParent centralizes deliveries for subagent results, stale notices, relayed messages, background job exit notices, and monitor events, every wake told the model to review "subagent output", even when only a bash_background job exited or a monitor emitted events. This misled the LLM into thinking a subagent ran, creating confusion in subsequent turns.
Solution
Dynamic Wake Resolution (nativeParentWakeText):
Defined WakeDeliveryKind ("subagent" | "job" | "monitor").
Defined explicit wake texts:
WAKE_TEXT_SUBAGENT: "Review the delivered subagent output and continue."
WAKE_TEXT_JOB: "Review the background job's exit notice and continue."
WAKE_TEXT_MONITOR: "Review the delivered monitor events and continue."
WAKE_TEXT_OUTPUT: "Review the delivered output and continue." (neutral fallback when multiple kinds arrive before one wake dispatch).
Exported nativeParentWakeText(kinds: ReadonlySet<WakeDeliveryKind>): string mapping single and mixed delivery kinds distinctly.
Delivery Kind Tracking:
Track pendingWakeKinds: Set<WakeDeliveryKind> in gentleAgents.
Pass the explicit delivery kind through sendToParent:
deliver, deliverStale, deliverMessage: "subagent"
flushJobNotices: "job" for job exit notices, "monitor" for monitor stream events or stops.
In dispatchWake, dynamically resolve message content via nativeParentWakeText(kinds). If dispatching fails, re-accumulate kinds into pendingWakeKinds for the retry.

GREEN: All 4 targeted tests pass (bash_background exit notice, monitor events, unit mapping, and compaction-held mixed delivery).
Idle parent wake prompts now match the accumulated delivery kinds. Job exits and monitor notices use their respective kinds. Mixed deliveries use a generic prompt, and failed dispatch restores pending kinds. Tests cover prompt selection and deferred mixed deliveries.

Summary
Track delivery kinds and select wake text extensions/gentle-agents.ts, tests/gentle-agents.test.ts, odd/tasks/fix-2384-parent-wake-text-delivery-kind.md
Idle deliveries record their kind. Dispatch selects a kind-specific prompt or a generic prompt for mixed kinds, and restores pending kinds if dispatch fails. Tests cover individual kinds, mixed kinds, and deferred flushing. The task checklist records the implementation and verification steps.
Manually stopped monitors can produce misleading parent wake prompts; correct the classification before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2384 requires parent wake text that matches the delivery kind. The whole-PR diff at head implements this. (1) nativeParentWakeText maps subagent, job, and monitor to distinct texts. Mixed kinds map to the neutral WAKE_TEXT_OUTPUT. An empty set maps to the subagent text. (2) flushJobNotices classifies job exits as job and monitor events and stops as monitor. deliver, deliverStale, and deliverMessage use the subagent default in sendToParent. (3) dispatchWake snapshots and clears pendingWakeKinds, and it re-adds them when dispatch fails. (4) The previous FAIL cause is fixed. pendingWakeKinds.clear() now runs in resetParentDelivery and in the agent_start path, alongside wakeOwed = false. The added test 'a run that consumes the owed wake does not leak its kind into the next wake (#2384)' holds a job delivery during prompt start, consumes the owed wake, then delivers a monitor event. It asserts monitor-specific text. Tests cover native job and monitor text, Claude Bridge job, monitor, and mixed text, and mixed delivery during compaction. Minor wording difference: the monitor constant reads 'Review the delivered monitor notice and continue.' The PR description states 'monitor events'. The issue presents its wording as an example, so this does not fail the requirement. Test pass results are author-reported; this assessment relies on source inspection and did not run the tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff changes stay within #2384. The changes are the wake-text constants and resolver, kind tracking through sendToParent and flushJobNotices, Claude Bridge text recognition and generation for each kind, the pendingWakeKinds reset paths, the new tests, and the ODD task record. One change is not explained in the PR description: the stuck-job shutdown test's scheduler no longer calls unref() on its timer. It is a test-harness adjustment. The diff does not show it is unrelated, so it is not treated as out of scope. The change is minor and should be explained in the PR description or commit message.

Thanks for picking this up so quickly, Carlos! The approach matches what I had in mind in #2384, and CI is green.
I can confirm CodeRabbit's finding with a reproduction. agent_start and resetParentDelivery clear wakeOwed, but they leave pendingWakeKinds as it is. A kind stored while a prompt is starting then leaks into the next wake:
before_agent_start (the prompt-start grace holds the wake)
a bash_background job exits → pendingWakeKinds = {job}, and no wake is sent
agent_start consumes the owed wake, but {job} stays
after the run, a monitor emits events → the wake says "Review the delivered output…" instead of the monitor text
Failing test (append to tests/gentle-agents.test.ts):
test("a run that consumes the owed wake does not leak its kind into the next wake (#2384)",async()=>{const{ pi, tools, fire, sent }=fakePi("openai");constharness=deps();consttimers=recordTimers(harness.deps);constjobs=fakeJobShell();gentleAgents(pi,{},{ ...harness.deps,jobShell: jobs.shell,jobOutputDir: ()=>jobs.dir});const{ ctx }=fakeContext();try{awaitfire("session_start",ctx);awaittools.get("bash_background")!.execute("b1",{command: "make test",label: "test"},undefined,undefined,ctx);awaitfire("before_agent_start",ctx,{type: "before_agent_start",prompt: "go",systemPrompt: "base",systemPromptOptions: {}});jobs.runs[0]!.exit(0);awaitjobIo();awaittick();assert.equal(sent.filter((e)=>e.message.customType==="gentle-agents.wake").length,0,"prompt start holds the wake");awaitfire("agent_start",ctx);awaitfire("agent_end",ctx);awaitfire("agent_settled",ctx);awaittick();awaittools.get("monitor")!.execute("m1",{command: "tail -f app.log",timeout_seconds: 60},undefined,undefined,ctx);jobs.runs[1]!.onData(Buffer.from("EVENT 1\n"));timers.run(200);awaitjobIo();awaiteventually(()=>sent.some((e)=>e.message.customType==="gentle-agents.wake"),"wake must be dispatched");constwakes=sent.filter((e)=>e.message.customType==="gentle-agents.wake").map((e)=>e.message.content);assert.deepEqual(wakes,["Review the delivered monitor events and continue."]);}finally{awaitfire("session_shutdown",ctx);jobs.cleanup();}});
On the PR head it fails with 'Review the delivered output and continue.'. Two lines fix it, and with them all 35 wake-related tests pass locally:

The native path is solid: pendingWakeKinds coalesces per dispatch, is restored in the catch (extensions/gentle-agents.ts:1035-1061), and nativeParentWakeText maps the single-kind and mixed cases cleanly. Verified 4/4 of the new tests and check-types reports 0 regressions.
One gap, though — the issue this closes is not fully closed:
dispatchWake has two branches (extensions/gentle-agents.ts:1044-1052). The claude-bridge branch sends bridgeWake(), and that text is built from PARENT_WAKE_TEXT (:109):
[System-generated Gentle Agents notification, not written by the user] Subagent output was delivered to this session above. Review it and continue.
So on a claude-bridge parent, a background-job exit notice or a monitor events notice wakes the model with exactly the wording #2384 complains about. The kinds set is snapshotted and cleared before the branch (:1035-1036) and is simply not used there.
The tests do not cover it because all four fakePi("openai") calls exercise the native branch, while fakePi's default provider is "claude-bridge" (tests/gentle-agents.test.ts:128); no test asserts wake text for a bridge parent receiving a job or monitor notice.
I understand why that branch may have been left alone: bridgeWakeIdentity.text is persisted and reused, restoreBridgeWakeIdentity reconstructs ownership by comparing data.text === bridgeWakeText(data.nonce) (:887-898), and the markdown transformer hides the message by exact match (:907-909). Varying the wording per delivery would mean issuing a per-wake identity (new nonce plus matching text) or changing those comparisons — more than a one-line change.
So: either extend the bridge wake, or state explicitly in the PR/issue that #2384 stays open for claude-bridge and file the follow-up. The issue title is not transport-specific, and the bridge is the provider this project dogfoods on. Adding one bridge test would make whichever decision visible.
…man-Programming#2384)
The claude-bridge branch still sent the subagent-only wake text after
background jobs and monitors. Derive the bridge text from the same
delivery kinds as the native wake, keep the nonce identity, and hide
every kind variant. Remove a timer unref in the stuck-job shutdown test
that let the event loop drain and cancel later tests.

@jals1212 Thanks for the repro and the test, that was exactly the gap. I added both pendingWakeKinds.clear() calls (in agent_start and resetParentDelivery) along with your test, and it went from red to green. I also applied CodeRabbit's wording nit: the monitor wake now says "monitor notice", since a stop notice with no events is classified as monitor too. Pushed in 1492101.
@LuisAlbertoMK Thanks for the careful read. The claude-bridge gap is covered now: the bridge wake text varies per delivery kind through bridgeWakeText(nonce, key), and isBridgeWakeText matches every kind, so the persisted identity and the exact-match hiding keep working. tests/gentle-agents.test.ts:6653 asserts the wake text and hiding for subagent, job and monitor on a bridge parent. #2384 should be fully closed with this PR.

Classify manually stopped monitors as monitor deliveries.
When a user stops a monitor from the jobs overlay, this line queues the notice as kind: "exit". The wake router then classifies it as a "job" wake, although the notice content identifies a stopped monitor. The parent receives monitor-stop content but is told to review a background job exit notice. Derive the wake kind from job.kind, or add a dedicated monitor-stop notice variant, and add a regression test for stopping a monitor from the jobs overlay. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
