What

The shim, uphold hook and uphold guard --text now write the same JUnit evidence guard --stage writes since #388. Implements #389 as ruled there.

  • One answer per rule from the text dispatch: pass, refuse, unknown, bypass, or out of scope at this destination. The seam's exit code and stderr derive from that list; the kani proofs in text cover the new answer.
  • Suites uphold shim <command>, uphold hook <harness>, uphold guard --text, package="uphold". Out of scope is skipped with scope=destination. A subject property holds the subject kind, never its content. No destination, owner, URL, branch, argv or body text enters the file. Consultations write their inner rules, not themselves.
  • Directory form: UPHOLD_JUNIT or --junit naming an existing directory writes one <suite>-<id>.xml per invocation (v8 UUID from clock, pid and counter; no random source, no new transitive crate). The shim and hook accept only a directory; a file there is exit 2 before the command runs. The hook and guard --text take --junit; the shim has no flag.
  • UPHOLD_ALLOW=all at the shim writes a zero-test suite with suite property allowed=all.
  • guard --text writes a document instead of refusing.

Tests

New cases in tests/shim_cli.rs, tests/hook_cli.rs, tests/text_cli.rs and tests/guard_cli.rs with a shared reader in tests/support/junit.rs: each seam's suite; a refused body to a private destination leaves none of the fixture's names in the file; a directory yields one file per invocation and two shim calls leave two; a file value at the shim is exit 2 and the command never runs; allowed=all; out-of-scope skipped; consultation records inner rules only; guard --text with a file and with a directory. Unit tests in text and junit for the answer list and the id.

Local: cargo fmt --check, clippy --all-targets -D warnings, full cargo test (31 binaries, 0 failed), cargo deny check, uphold check, uphold scan, text guards over both docs.

Docs: REFERENCE.md "Recording what a run decided" and "A file or a directory"; DESIGN.md "uphold decides; it does not record" extended.

Closes #389.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added JUnit reports for text guards, hooks, shims, and stage checks. Reports can be written to a file or, where supported, an existing directory that receives a separate report for each run.
    • Reports show rule outcomes, including passes, refusals, bypasses, errors, and rules skipped because they are out of scope. They identify relevant subjects without including judged text or destination details.
    • Added JUnit reporting options and usage guidance for these checks.

Explanation

The pull request addresses the active coding requirements in #389. src/text.rs, src/shim.rs, src/hook.rs, src/guard/mod.rs, and src/junit.rs record pass, refusal, unknown, bypass, and out-of-scope outcomes. The seam verdicts use the recorded judgments. The implementation adds the required suite names, properties, subject-kind handling, consultation handling, directory output, shim file rejection, UPHOLD_ALLOW=all, and guard --text output. The reported CLI, unit, and Kani tests cover these behaviors. The documentation changes cover the required recording and directory forms.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within #389. The Rust changes implement shared JUnit recording and outcome handling for the shim, hook, and text guard. The test changes verify the requested seams and edge cases. The documentation changes describe the requested behavior. The UUID dependency supports the required per-invocation directory filenames. No signing, attestation, scan behavior, or retention feature is added.

Fix the XML example: a stage never writes an out-of-scope testcase.

The example puts a scope=destination testcase inside uphold guard pre-push. The Outcome::OutOfScope doc in src/junit.rs says "Only a seam with a destination answers this; a stage never does." guard::run records only pass, refuse, unknown, or bypass.

The example also shows <property name="set" value="local"/>. Suite::record adds set only when case.set is Some, so a local rule has classname local and no set property.

To fix it, use a shim suite for this testcase (seam=shim in place of stage) and remove the set property. Alternatively, move the out-of-scope example to a separate shim suite.

`UPHOLD_ALLOW`, `all` when `all` matched. A shim or hook testcase carries
`subject`, the kind of thing it collected, such as `pr-body`, `issue-title` or
`release-note`. It holds the kind and never the content.

List the subject kinds the code records.

The text gives pr-body, issue-title and release-note as examples. The code never produces these values:

  • At the shim, the subject is Subject.kind: text, title, ref, path or argv.
  • At the hook, the subject is the tool name, or <tool> <key> for a headline.
  • At guard --text, the subject is always text.

guard --text testcases also carry subject, so "A shim or hook testcase" is incomplete. Replace the examples with the real values.

- **`UPHOLD_ALLOW=all` at the shim** runs the command unchecked before the
policy is read, so it knows no rules. It writes a suite with zero tests and the
suite property `allowed=all`, so "ran unchecked" is a document and not an
absence. Allure reads no suite properties; the machine reader does.

State the zero-test suite as an exception to the testcase rule.

Lines 2042-2044 say a run writes "one <testcase> per rule the seam evaluated". The allowed=all suite has zero testcases. Readers who check the counts should know this case is an exception. Add a short reference here back to that rule.

🚀 New features to boost your workflow:
  • ❄️ Test Analytics: Detect flaky tests, report on failures, and find test suite problems.

The text seams answered in refusals only, so #388's evidence file could
not be written from them. The text dispatch now returns one answer per
rule it consulted: pass, refuse, unknown, bypass, or out of scope at this
destination, a fifth state a stage never has. The seam's exit code and
stderr are derived from that list, so the human report and the file
cannot disagree, and the kani proofs in `text` are extended to it.

Each seam writes one document per invocation: `uphold shim <command>`,
`uphold hook <harness>` and `uphold guard --text`, `package="uphold"`.
Out of scope is a skipped testcase with `scope=destination`, because a
rule stood down at this destination is a run-time decision a reader of
a bypass log asks about, where a rule a stage never declared is a fact
about the policy. A `subject` property carries the subject kind and
never its content; no destination, owner, URL, branch, argv or body
text enters the file, since the destination is what
prevent-unowned-target protects. Consultations write the rules they
ran and not themselves.

UPHOLD_JUNIT or --junit naming an existing directory writes one
`<suite>-<id>.xml` per invocation, named by a v8 UUID built from the
clock, the process id and a counter. The shim and hook accept only the
directory form, a file there being exit 2 before the command runs; the
hook and `guard --text` take --junit, the shim has no flag.
UPHOLD_ALLOW=all at the shim writes a suite of zero tests with the suite
property `allowed=all`. `guard --text` writes a document instead of
refusing; the refusal's test and the proof helpers the old answer shape
needed go with it, each replaced by the per-answer form or the
shadow-array form:
clean_means_every_consulted_kind_looked_and_found_nothing,
every_consulted_kind_is_asked_once_and_every_finding_is_kept,
looked_and_found_nothing,
the_text_seam_refuses_to_run_with_the_variable_set,
the_verdict_is_a_function_of_the_consulted_answers.

The proofs model the list cheaply: a four-letter answer alphabet, a
unit ledger with a refusal counter for the two verdict proofs, and a
fixed shadow array of byte codes for the two list proofs. The first
shape, a vector of outcomes read back symbolically, took minutes and
gigabytes per harness and put the CI job past its runner's memory.
That first shape's proof a_consulted_kind_that_could_not_look_is_broken_and_ends_the_list
is folded into a_consulted_kind_that_could_not_look and
the_list_is_a_function_of_the_consulted_answers, and its helper
outcome, which decoded a ledger entry into an Outcome, is gone with the
entries it decoded.

Closes #389.
