🎃 Add a "Star on GitHub" button to self-hosted instances #847

Description

@keysersoft

Part of the October Challenge #846.

What

Many people run AnythingMCP self-hosted and never visit the repository. Add a small, unobtrusive "⭐ Star on GitHub" button to the app that links to https://github.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp. Other self-hosted products, such as Plane, already do this.

Where to look

  • packages/frontend/src/components/app-sidebar.tsx: the main navigation. The bottom of the sidebar is the natural place.
  • packages/frontend/src/components/app-shell.tsx: the layout around the sidebar, if a header placement works better.
  • packages/frontend/src/lib/use-edition.ts: useEdition() returns null on AnythingMCP Cloud and the edition (community / Business) on self-hosted instances. Use it to decide when to show the button. packages/frontend/src/components/edition-banner.tsx is an example.

Acceptance criteria

  • Shown only on self-hosted instances, never on AnythingMCP Cloud.
  • Opens the repository in a new tab (target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer").
  • No request from the browser to api.github.com or any other external host. Many instances run in closed corporate networks. Icon and label are enough. A star count is out of scope for this issue.
  • The user can hide it, and the choice is remembered in localStorage. Wrap the access in try/catch because storage can be blocked.
  • Admins can turn it off for the whole instance with an environment variable, e.g. NEXT_PUBLIC_HIDE_GITHUB_STAR=true, documented next to the other frontend variables.
  • Looks right in light and dark theme, with the sidebar collapsed, and on mobile.
  • The pull request includes screenshots (light and dark).
