Join planning: literal-equality selectivity without distinct counts; join types that build their preserved side; build-side preference - #166
Design note: P2-T166 (part 1a of the build-side work for semi, anti and outer joins).
What changes
Three commits, one step each:
optimizer: default selectivity for literal equalities without a distinct count. Before this change, a column with no distinct count was treated as all-distinct, so col = literal and col IN (list) estimated 1/rows, about one row. Parquet footers carry no distinct counts for string columns. A filter such as l_returnflag = 'R' therefore made a 60M-row input look like the smallest one, and join ordering built it. Col now records whether its distinct count comes from statistics. Without one, those predicates take DEFAULT_SELECTIVITY (0.2). Equalities between columns keep 1/ndv.
exec, plan-codec: join types that build their preserved side.JoinType::{RightSemi, RightAnti, RightOuter} are added as plan data only. The hash-join and nested-loop constructors refuse them with KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE, and the planner never produces them. krishiv.plan.v1 adds the three enum values. A plan that uses one raises min_reader_version, so an older reader refuses it as too new instead of reporting it as corrupt. The join-type decoder now matches every value explicitly; before, it mapped every unlisted value to the null-aware anti join. Goldens are under tests/golden/v4.
exec: the build side a hash join prefers.planner/orient.rs is a pure function over InputStats (estimated rows, table bytes, and whether the estimate comes from statistics or defaults). The same function can later take statistics merged per stage at materialized exchanges. The rules:
A broadcastable right build stays where it is.
Otherwise the left input is preferred when the right costs more than 2× the left (both sides from statistics) or more than 8× (either side from defaults).
A tie keeps the right input.
Inner joins, the null-aware anti join and hinted joins are never reoriented.
Since the new join types do not run yet, the plan keeps the right build and EXPLAIN shows the preference.
Format version.main is at v3, so this PR uses v4. Other open PRs also bump the codec format, so the number will be re-assigned at rebase to the next free version. Case names are version-agnostic (hash_join_right_semi, …).
Plan changes (estimator fix)
Plans were dumped before and after over local Parquet data: TPC-H SF10 and TPC-DS SF1, footer statistics, planning only.
TPC-H SF10: 7 of 22 plans change.
q10: the orders × lineitem join now builds the date-filtered orders side instead of the 15M l_returnflag = 'R' rows of lineitem.
q21: the inner join now builds orders instead of lineitem × orders (o_orderstatus = 'F' was estimated at one row).
q08: join order changes.
q03, q07, q12: builds move from broadcast to partitioned once their estimates exceed 10 MiB. One worker lowers exchanges to identity, so execution does not change.
Bloom runtime filters (built when a build is estimated at ≤ 4M rows): q07 loses one; q08, q19 and q21 gain one or two.
TPC-DS SF1: 23 of 99 plans change (41 still fail to plan, as before).
Join order or build side: all 23 (q04, q07, q08, q11, q13, q26, q27, q31, q33, q34, q48, q54, q56, q60, q61, q64, q66, q71, q73, q74, q85, q91, q96). This includes swapped probe and build sides and re-nested dimension joins.
Bloom filters lost: q33, q56, q60, q61.
Bloom filters gained: q07, q13, q64, q66, q73.
Known risk: 0.2 overestimates low-cardinality string equalities, for example a 25- or 40-value column. The benchmark run below is the check.
Snapshots. The repository's TPC-H snapshots change as follows:
The rule and property tests that need a selective filter on a table without statistics now plan under explicit all-distinct statistics, the estimates they were written against.
Orientation preferences with TPC-H SF10 footer statistics: q04 (semi), q13 (left outer), q21 (semi and anti) and q22 (anti) show prefers Right…. In TPC-DS SF1, only q38 does.
Tests
Estimator: literal equality and IN list with and without distinct counts, the literal on either side, and column = column unchanged.
Orientation (unit tests): every rule, the two factors, ties, NaN/∞ estimates, and determinism over a fixed random sequence in two call orders.
Orientation (planner tests): semi, anti and left outer joins show the preference; NOT IN, inner, broadcastable and hinted joins do not; a default estimate needs the larger ratio.
Plan data and codec: constructors refuse the new types (exact class plus message), codec round trip, v4 goldens, min_reader_version per case, and an unspecified join type is corrupt.
Checks
cargo xtask precheck, typos (exit codes in the hand-back), and nextest for krishiv-optimizer, krishiv-exec and krishiv-plan-codec.
Benchmark A/B still to run (planning changes execution through join order and Bloom planning): TPC-H SF10 and TPC-DS SF1, base vs this branch.
Follow-up commits (benchmark review)
2b3faaab: a join condition with a filtered input counts at most as many distinct keys as the filter keeps (containment). TPC-DS q07, q26, q27 and q61 keep the fact table as the probe side.
4c05a6ea: column equalities that every disjunct of an or holds become join conditions of their own. Fixes the cross product in TPC-DS q13.
10e470e8: that rewrite applies only when some inputs are otherwise joined only by a condition over three or more of them, so q19 and q85 keep their join keys.
72eab5c5: review fixes: c <=> NULL selectivity, WITH references counted as default estimates, exact orientation-test assertions.
Known follow-ups, not in this PR:
q48: a column whose footer min equals its max has one distinct value. The physical estimator counts filters that pushdown implied below a join a second time.
Cross products between parts that share no condition join the largest parts first.

…nct count
Without a distinct count the estimator took every value of a column as
distinct, so `col = literal` and `col IN (list)` estimated 1/rows of a
table: about one row. A low-cardinality string column with only footer
statistics (row counts and bounds, no distinct counts) then made a large
input look like the smallest one, and join ordering built it: TPC-H q10
built the 15M `l_returnflag = 'R'` rows of lineitem at SF10, and q21
built `lineitem x orders` through `o_orderstatus = 'F'`.
`Col` now records whether its distinct count comes from statistics; a
literal equality or IN list on a column without one takes
DEFAULT_SELECTIVITY (0.2). Equalities between columns keep 1/ndv.
Rule and property tests that need a selective filter on tables without
statistics now plan under explicit all-distinct statistics, the
estimates they were written against; the TPC-H plans under default
estimates and under footer statistics change (q02, q05, q07, q08, q10,
q17, q19, q21 and q08, q10, q21 respectively).

Adds `RightSemi`, `RightAnti` and `RightOuter` to the physical join type:
a left semi, left anti or left outer join that builds its left input and
returns that side's rows by their matches. They are plan data only in
this change: the hash and nested-loop join constructors refuse them with
KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE and the planner does not produce them yet.
krishiv.plan.v1 gains the three join types as format version 4. A plan
that uses one raises `min_reader_version` to 4, so an older reader
refuses it as too new instead of as corrupt; other plans keep
`min_reader_version` 2. The join-type decoder now matches every value
explicitly (an unknown or unspecified value is corrupt) instead of
mapping unlisted values to the null-aware anti join. New golden files
under tests/golden/v4.

`planner/orient.rs` decides which input of a semi, anti or left outer
hash join should be built: a pure function of the two inputs' estimated
table bytes and where the estimates come from (`InputStats`), so the same
function can later take statistics merged from materialized exchanges.
The right input stays the build when it is small enough to broadcast;
otherwise the left one is preferred when the right costs more than twice
as much (both estimates from table statistics) or eight times as much
(either from default estimates). A tie keeps the right input. Inner
joins keep the join orderer's choice, a null-aware anti join (NOT IN) is
never reoriented, and a hint decides as before.
The joins that build their preserved side do not run yet, so the plan
keeps the right build; EXPLAIN shows the preference on the join, e.g.
`prefers RightSemi (probe: 600000 rows / 25.2 MiB, statistics; build:
59986052 rows / 1373.0 MiB, statistics)`. With TPC-H SF10 footer
statistics it marks q04, q13, q21 (both subquery joins) and q22.

Walkthrough
The change adds right-semi, right-anti, and right-outer join types, reports preferred orientations for supported joins, and updates optimizer statistics and join-order planning.
Changes: Join Planning and Plan Compatibility
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Preserved-side join types and codec crates/krishiv-exec/src/join/mod.rs, proto/krishiv/plan/v1/plan.proto, crates/krishiv-plan-codec/src/*, crates/krishiv-plan-codec/tests/*
The join enums and codec add right-semi, right-anti, and right-outer types. The codec marks these types with join_build_preserved and the post-migration reader version.
Executor handling for right-side joins crates/krishiv-exec/src/join/{mod.rs,nested.rs,probe.rs}, crates/krishiv-exec/tests/nested_loop.rs
The hash and nested-loop executors reject build-preserving joins as unsupported. Probe-tail handling returns no tail batch for these joins.
The planner can prefer building the left input for supported left joins when the right input exceeds the applicable byte-size threshold. Tests cover threshold boundaries and unsupported cases.
When no distribution hint is set, the planner computes input statistics and reports a differing preferred orientation. The selected build side remains unchanged.

Summary
Selectivity estimates and NDV tracking crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/stats.rs, crates/krishiv-optimizer/tests/it/{join_order.rs,props.rs,rules.rs}, crates/krishiv-optimizer/tests/it/support/mod.rs
Equality and IN estimates use default selectivity when NDV is unknown. Expand NDV tracking and null-safe equality estimates are updated, with integration tests for the estimate behavior.
Join-order graph and shared equalities crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/{expr.rs,join_order.rs}, crates/krishiv-optimizer/tests/it/join_order.rs
The optimizer extracts equalities shared across disjuncts when needed to connect join inputs. Join-graph estimation separates filters from join predicates and caps referenced NDVs at filtered row counts.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#150: Adds Expand cardinality and column-statistics estimation, which is related to this change’s NDV tracking through grouping-set expansion.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#193: Establishes plan-codec feature flags and reader compatibility, which this change uses for build-preserving join types.
Merge Risk: Low · up to d6c8c
The bare–mid orientation test could miss an incorrect plan. This is a bounded coverage gap; the previously reported estimate and CTE-threshold concerns are addressed.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to d6c8c
The new join types are version-gated and rejected by execution constructors, while orientation preferences remain advisory. No new privilege or data-access bypass was demonstrated. Residual uncertainty concerns reader interoperability and query resource usage after join-order estimates change.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated effects concern query-plan compatibility, join ordering, and resulting resource placement within the query engine. Changed estimates can influence broadcast versus partitioned execution, but the inspected changes do not establish increased identity authority or cross-tenant data access. Deployment-wide exposure and tenant resource isolation remain unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-supplied serialized plans encounter feature and construct-consistency checks during decoding. Even a successfully decoded plan containing a new right-preserving join cannot activate that join through the inspected execution constructors, which return an unsupported-feature error.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — For the newly unsupported variants, rejection precedes allocation of mutable join execution state, so repeated or concurrent construction attempts do not enter a partially initialized build-preservation lifecycle. This conclusion is limited to the inspected constructor paths, not broader query cancellation or distributed recovery behavior.

PhysNode::Expand (ROLLUP, CUBE, GROUPING SETS) and the NullOf project item
it uses made the codec's matches non-exhaustive. The proto gains ExpandNode
(layout, projections, nullability, subqueries), ExpandProjection and
ProjectNullOf. The writer format version becomes 5. A plan raises its
min_reader_version to 5 only when it holds an Expand or a NullOf item, so
other plans stay readable by older readers and an older reader never meets a
node it does not know.
The decoder refuses an expand without a projection and a projection whose
item count differs from the nullability list. The v1 to v4 goldens still
decode; the v5 goldens add three Expand shapes (a rollup with a grouping
id, a single projection, a computed column beside a nulled one with a
subquery). The TPC-DS ratchet shrinks by the four grouping-set queries
(q05, q14, q18, q22) that now plan and round-trip.

A plan now lists the named features it uses (sorted string ids) and its
wire epoch. A reader checks the epoch and the features before it reads a
node, names any it lacks, and refuses a header that does not match the
plan's constructs, so the header can be read on its own (features_of).
- features.rs: the sorted registry (limit_offset, window), feature_of
with exhaustive matches over node kinds, project items, join types,
partitionings, window and aggregate functions, and ReaderFeatures.
- format_version is frozen at 5; min_reader_version keeps working for
readers that predate features (new features use level 6). Plans
without an epoch decode by their content.
- Goldens: base/ and one directory per feature, byte-exact; v1-v4 frozen.
- The decoder maps protobuf enums without wildcards.

schema element added from now on (baseline.txt lists the others).

Join ordering estimated each join conjunct from its inputs' unfiltered
column statistics, while the conjuncts that filter one input only scaled
that input's rows. A dimension filtered to one year (365 of 73,049
`d_date_sk` values) joined to a fact table holding about five years of
dates was then estimated at 1/200 of the fact rows instead of about a
fifth. Once literal equalities on columns without a distinct count got
the default selectivity, that underestimate decided join orders: in
TPC-DS q07, q26, q27 and q61 the fact-and-date join looked smaller than
the filtered demographics or promotion dimension, so the fact side was
built and the dimension probed, and the Bloom filter the dimension
build gave the fact scan was lost.
Before estimating join conjuncts, each input's column distinct counts
are now capped at the rows its filters keep, as the estimate of a filter
already does (the containment assumption). In those queries the fact
table is again the probe side of every dimension join, each dimension
build filters the fact scan, and the most selective dimension joins
first. TPC-H q10 still builds orders, not lineitem.
New test: TPC-DS q26's shape over footer statistics (the demographics
join below the date join); default-estimate TPC-H snapshots q10, q17,
q21 and two join-order snapshots change.

Join ordering takes a condition's conjuncts as its join edges. TPC-DS
q13 joins store_sales, customer_demographics and household_demographics
through one `or` whose three disjuncts each hold `cd_demo_sk =
ss_cdemo_sk` and `ss_hdemo_sk = hd_demo_sk`: a single condition over
three inputs, so two of them could only meet in a cross product, which
joins the parts largest first. With the demographics filter estimated
at its default selectivity, the filtered customer_demographics became
the larger part and was crossed with the fact side (hundreds of
millions of pairs instead of the household side's thousands).
Before ordering, the column equalities every disjunct holds are now
conjuncts of their own and the `or` keeps the rest:
`(a = b and x) or (a = b and y)` is `a = b and (x or y)`
(distributivity, valid in three-valued logic; a column equality cannot
raise and is deterministic). q13 then joins every dimension to the fact
table by key, with no cross product; q19 and q85 conditions are
rewritten the same way (q85 also joins its two demographics instances
on the shared marital and education status).
New test: q13's shape over TPC-H statistics plans without a cross
product (it does not without this change), and the rewrite keeps the
rows of a three-input `or`, of a disjunct holding only the shared
equalities, and of equalities only some disjuncts hold.
Design: P2-T166 (PR 1a, review of the benchmark A/B).
Signed-off-by: techysneha14 <343708768+shehatathe@users.noreply.github.com>
The previous change took the column equalities every disjunct holds out
of each `or` condition. Where other conditions already join the inputs,
that only adds join keys: TPC-DS q85 joined its two demographics
instances on two string columns as well, and ran slower. The equalities
are now taken out only when some inputs are joined by nothing but a
condition over three or more of them, which is the case they exist for
(TPC-DS q13). q19 and q85 plan as before that change.
New test: q85's shape (an `or` over three inputs other conditions join)
keeps its shared equality inside the `or`.
Design: P2-T166 (PR 1a, review of the benchmark A/B).

…tes, exact orientation tests
- `c <=> NULL` holds exactly where `c` is NULL: its selectivity is now
the column's null fraction, as for `c IS NULL`, instead of `1 / ndv`
or the default (the estimator sees the form the optimizer keeps).
- `has_statistics` counts a `WITH` reference as a default-sized input,
as the estimator reads it, so orientation takes the larger factor.
- The orientation tests for joins without a preference assert each
join's exact line (type, key order, filters) instead of only the
absence of a preference.

RightSemi, RightAnti and RightOuter are the join_build_preserved feature
(an optimization feature: without it the planner builds the other side),
with legacy level 6 instead of format version 4; their goldens move to
golden/join_build_preserved and the v4 directory stays as frozen.
Columns passed through Expand keep whether their distinct count comes
from statistics.

What changes
Three commits, one step each:
optimizer: default selectivity for literal equalities without a distinct count. Before this change, a column with no distinct count was treated as all-distinct, so
col = literalandcol IN (list)estimated1/rows, about one row. Parquet footers carry no distinct counts for string columns. A filter such asl_returnflag = 'R'therefore made a 60M-row input look like the smallest one, and join ordering built it.Colnow records whether its distinct count comes from statistics. Without one, those predicates takeDEFAULT_SELECTIVITY(0.2). Equalities between columns keep1/ndv.exec, plan-codec: join types that build their preserved side.
JoinType::{RightSemi, RightAnti, RightOuter}are added as plan data only. A plan that uses one raisesmin_reader_version, so an older reader refuses it as too new instead of reporting it as corrupt. 2b3faaab: a join condition with a filtered input counts at most as many distinct keys as the filter keeps (containment). TPC-DS q07, q26, q27 and q61 keep the fact table as the probe side.4c05a6ea: column equalities that every disjunct of anorholds become join conditions of their own. Fixes the cross product in TPC-DS q13.10e470e8: that rewrite applies only when some inputs are otherwise joined only by a condition over three or more of them, so q19 and q85 keep their join keys.72eab5c5: review fixes:c <=> NULLselectivity, WITH references counted as default estimates, exact orientation-test assertions.Known follow-ups, not in this PR:
