Adds GROUP BY ALL, ORDER BY ALL, SELECT * EXCEPT (...), QUALIFY and NATURAL JOIN. ENCODING_VERSION 3 -> 4 (also bumped by the inline-VALUES PR: whichever merges second moves to 5). Also changes how UNRESOLVED_COLUMN proposals are ranked for every query (quoted candidates vs the written name; matches Spark 4.2.0 on the cases in unresolved_column_proposals_rank_like_spark).

Spark 4.2.0 oracle: SORT BY ALL and sortWithinPartitions('all') -> UNRESOLVED_COLUMN (not expanded); orderBy('all'), ORDER BY ALL expand; DataFrame groupBy('all') -> UNRESOLVED_COLUMN (GROUP BY ALL is SQL-only here); NATURAL LEFT/RIGHT JOIN without common columns returns the product; NATURAL LEFT SEMI/ANTI is rejected (Spark: bare "requirement failed"); EXCEPT over a repeated name -> AMBIGUOUS_REFERENCE.
Known: a hidden NATURAL right key (SELECT y.a FROM x NATURAL JOIN y) is not supported (same gap as USING); UNRESOLVED_COLUMN proposals over joins are unqualified where Spark qualifies them.

…RAL JOIN

Five Spark query forms that failed in lowering or analysis now resolve
as Spark 4.2.0 does, with no executor or physical planner change.

GROUP BY ALL and ORDER BY ALL resolve in the analyzer only: a lone
unqualified ALL groups by every select item without an aggregate
(UNRESOLVED_ALL_IN_GROUP_BY when nothing can be inferred) and sorts by
every output column, with a real column named ALL taking precedence in
both. Lowering stamps the GROUP BY ALL key with the whole clause span
so the error cites the clause.

SELECT * EXCEPT carries its excluded paths on the IR star; star
expansion drops them, raising EXCEPT_OVERLAPPING_COLUMNS for nested or
repeated entries, UNRESOLVED_COLUMN for unknown ones, and
KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE naming a nested field (no struct support,
never a wrong column).

QUALIFY lowers to a Filter with a wrapped predicate, resolved like
HAVING with window extraction shared with that path; an aggregate in
the predicate or a missing window function raises Spark's classes.

NATURAL JOIN lowers to a marker the analyzer replaces by the USING
join over the common column names in left order (a cross join when
there are none, as Spark). Names repeat with multiplicity and resolve
first-match, as Spark's key resolution does; USING itself stays strict
for repeated names.

Suggestion proposals now rank quoted candidates by edit distance to
the unquoted name with ties in name order, matching Spark's
orderSuggestedIdentifiersBySimilarity (verified against a real
Spark 4.2.0 run).

Ground truth: the clause_forms session suite replays the
group-by-all, group-by-all-duckdb, order-by-all, qualify and
natural-join goldens over registered tables (statement counts in the
file header), plus part of group-by-all-mosha and the flat cases of
selectExcept. Skipped statements need pre-existing features outside
this change: struct columns, hidden NATURAL right keys, correlated
grouping keys, FULL OUTER JOIN, string scalar subqueries in one shape,
decimal division. Error classes and message parameters match; row
order is exact for top-level ORDER BY, set-compared otherwise.

Not verified: QUALIFY/EXCEPT query-context spans (origins are
best-effort); hidden NATURAL keys (pre-existing USING gap);
cross-catalog qualifier depth in proposals.

SORT BY ALL and sortWithinPartitions("all") are an unknown column in Spark
4.2.0 (UNRESOLVED_COLUMN.WITH_SUGGESTION); only the global ORDER BY ALL and
the DataFrame orderBy("all") expand, so the sort expansion now requires a
global sort.

GROUP BY ALL is a SQL clause: a DataFrame groupBy("all") is an unknown
column in Spark. The expansion is gated on the aggregate's SQL span and
decided by looking for a column or select-list alias named `all`, instead
of catching an UNRESOLVED_COLUMN error from resolving the key first.

NATURAL LEFT SEMI and LEFT ANTI joins are rejected (Spark raises a bare
"requirement failed: Unsupported natural join type"), and tests cover
NATURAL LEFT/RIGHT joins without a common column (the product, as Spark),
SELECT * EXCEPT over a repeated name (AMBIGUOUS_REFERENCE) and the
UNRESOLVED_COLUMN proposal ranking. The golden driver's header no longer
claims the engine lacks VALUES.

The registry coverage check wants a test that names each error class the
engine raises. The QUALIFY goldens cover QUALIFY_REQUIRES_WINDOW_FUNCTION and
QUALIFY_AGGREGATE_NOT_ALLOWED through the replay driver; a named test now
asserts both classes.

Walkthrough

The change adds SQL lowering and analysis for SELECT * EXCEPT, QUALIFY, GROUP BY ALL, ORDER BY ALL, and NATURAL JOIN. It updates plan encoding and display for the new plan data and adds analyzer, lowering, and session tests.

Changes: SQL clause support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan contracts and SQL lowering
crates/krishiv-plan/src/{expr.rs,plan.rs,display.rs,encode.rs,walk.rs}, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/tests/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-connect/src/translate/expression.rs, crates/krishiv-session/src/*, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/*, crates/krishiv-session/tests/clause_forms.rs
The plan adds star exclusion paths and a natural-join condition marker. SQL lowering preserves the new clause forms. Encoding advances to version 4, and display and plan visitors handle the new fields and variant. The session tests add a Spark golden-case replay harness.
Star exclusion analysis
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/exprs.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/analyzer.rs, crates/krishiv-session/tests/clause_forms.rs
The analyzer removes matching top-level columns for * EXCEPT. It accepts bare and qualifier-qualified names, applies case-sensitivity settings, and reports overlapping, unknown, ambiguous, and nested paths. Unresolved-column suggestions rank quoted candidate names.
QUALIFY resolution
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/{bind.rs,exprs.rs,ops.rs}, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/analyzer.rs, crates/krishiv-session/tests/clause_forms.rs
SQL lowering wraps the QUALIFY predicate for analyzer handling. The analyzer resolves it over projections and aggregates, including HAVING-filtered aggregates, and checks window and aggregate use.
GROUP BY ALL and ORDER BY ALL
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/ops.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/analyzer.rs, crates/krishiv-session/tests/clause_forms.rs
GROUP BY ALL expands to eligible non-aggregate select expressions. Global ORDER BY ALL expands to output columns. Both retain the specified precedence for a column named all; non-global sorts do not expand ALL.
NATURAL JOIN resolution
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/ops.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/analyzer.rs, crates/krishiv-session/tests/clause_forms.rs
The analyzer derives common columns in left-input order and resolves them through the USING path. Natural joins with no common columns use no condition, while natural left-semi and left-anti joins return an unsupported-feature error.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Possibly related PRs

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 37844

The new QUALIFY, GROUP BY ALL and EXCEPT forms have correctness gaps: HAVING combined with QUALIFY can return rows from groups that HAVING should remove, and some edge cases are handled differently from Spark. Fix the HAVING-with-QUALIFY handling before merging; the other items are narrower edge cases.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 37844

The new clauses use existing relation-resolution and permission checks, and no introduced security bypass was established. Risk remains bounded but nonzero because clause interpretation interacts with plan identity, and external consumers and deployment behavior were not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is query interpretation over relations bound for the executing principal. The examined changes do not establish additional tenant, service, credential, or environment authority; maximum deployment-wide exposure remains unestablished.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Binding precedes resolution. The existing authorization function checks SELECT for the current principal, rejects denials and policy errors, and rejects conditional grants requiring unsupported row filters or column masks. Base-to-head comparison leaves this authorization function unchanged; the binding change recognizes the QUALIFY marker rather than treating it as a routine.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The examined DataFrame memoization path reuses its own analysis subject to configuration, catalog, and file-read checks. Analysis must succeed before publication under the mutex, so failure or interruption before completion does not publish a partial result. This path does not look up another DataFrame's analysis by structural hash.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before using canonical identity for shared analyzed-plan reuse, encode semantic clause intent explicitly or prove equivalence across differing origins. Preserve principal and policy context in any shared-cache identity. This is a future control-preservation proposal, not an observed cross-principal cache vulnerability.

Explanation

The title "feat(sql): clause forms" is short and follows Conventional Commits. It names the SQL area, but "clause forms" is broad. The changeset adds GROUP BY ALL, ORDER BY ALL, SELECT * EXCEPT, QUALIFY, and NATURAL JOIN, and also changes UNRESOLVED_COLUMN suggestion ranking. The title covers the main theme without naming any specific feature.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the main features, the ENCODING_VERSION bump from 3 to 4, and the change to UNRESOLVED_COLUMN ranking. It also lists Spark 4.2.0 oracle behaviours and known gaps. It does not fill the template's Summary section with task, spec, or ADR links. The Tests run section is missing: it has no commands or result lines. The checklist and performance review are not addressed. The DCO, CHANGELOG, SPDX, and error-class items are not confirmed.

Resolution

Add the task ID (P2-Txxx), spec chapter, and any ADR links under Task / spec / ADRs. Paste the test commands and their result lines under Tests run, including the clause_forms session suite and the krishiv-plan and krishiv-sql test runs. Tick or annotate the checklist items, and state the Spark-oracle source for the expectations. Complete the Rust API Guidelines and Performance review sections, or mark them not applicable. Note the PR size: the changed line count is above the 5,000-line limit when test code is weighted at half, so state how the PR complies or split the work.

Minor · count(* EXCEPT (...)) silently drops the EXCEPT list. · exprs.rs:676-677

crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/exprs.rs:676-677
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

count(* EXCEPT (...)) silently drops the EXCEPT list.

The new Star.except field is not part of the count_star check. A call such as count(* EXCEPT (a)) matches [a] if a is Star with empty qualifier and no plan_id. The call then becomes count(1). The EXCEPT entries are never validated (an unknown name is not reported). The count ignores the exclusion.

The Star has except set after lowering (ExprKind::Wildcard). The call reaches this branch with except non-empty. clause_forms.rs skips these statements ((* EXCEPT), so no test covers the path.

Restrict the count(1) rewrite to a star without exclusions. A star with exclusions then goes through expand, which applies apply_except.

Proposed fix
-            && matches!(&f.args[..], [a] if matches!(&a.node, ExprNode::Star(s) if s.qualifier.is_empty() && s.plan_id.is_none()));
+            && matches!(&f.args[..], [a] if matches!(&a.node, ExprNode::Star(s) if s.qualifier.is_empty() && s.plan_id.is_none() && s.except.is_empty()));

Verify the result against Spark 4.2 for SELECT count(* EXCEPT (a)) FROM t.

crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/display_more.rs:154-160
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a printer case for * EXCEPT.

This fixture only uses an empty except. The new branch in expr_pieces (EXCEPT (a, b.c), with Name quoting) is not covered. Add a case with a non-empty except and assert the exact string. For example, assert "t.* EXCEPT (a, `b c`.d)" for except: vec![vec!["a"], vec!["b c", "d"]]. A JoinCondition::Natural display case (, NATURAL) is also missing.

As per path instructions: "Tests must assert exact expected values (taken from Spark or a stated oracle), not just success".
