feat(functions): URL scalar functions and schema_of_csv - #239
Register parse_url, try_parse_url, url_encode, url_decode and
try_url_decode with Spark 4.2 semantics, and resolve schema_of_csv in
the analyzer to the DDL string its foldable argument infers to.
The URL family (scalar/url.rs, registry/url.rs) follows Spark's
urlExpressions against java.net.URI: url_encode/url_decode are
URLEncoder/URLDecoder over UTF-8 (space to +, unreserved A-Za-z0-9.-*_
kept, malformed escapes are CANNOT_DECODE_URL or NULL for the try
variant); parse_url reads the raw components case-sensitively (anything
else is NULL), a key only for QUERY, an invalid URL is INVALID_URL
under ANSI and NULL otherwise while try_parse_url is always NULL.
parse_url takes strict strings, the codecs cast any argument.
schema_of_csv (registry/csv.rs) keeps Spark's check order (options,
foldable, null, string) and the analyzer replaces a well-typed call
with the DDL literal, inferred by the CSV reader's own inference over
the literal (krishiv-io csv::ddl_of_string, same layering as the file
path; krishiv-plan gains the L3->L2 edge, no layering exception). Its
execution is Evaluator so no scalar binding is needed.
from_csv/to_csv are not implemented: the engine has no struct type end
to end (no analyzer type, Arrow carrier or registry input type), and
map() is unimplemented so the options form of schema_of_csv cannot be
called from SQL either.
Ground truth: Spark v4.2.0 urlExpressions/csvExpressions sources, the
url-functions.sql and csv-functions.sql goldens, the function-matrix
url.jsonl/csv.jsonl fixtures (750 new cases, 600 pass; the manifest
grows only for array/map/struct/interval arguments plus two
CAST(binary AS STRING) folds), and java.net.URI probes for the splitter
tables.
Known divergences from Spark, all pre-existing engine behavior except
where noted: output names redact a bare userinfo (ADR 0038); the SQL
lexer reads ; as ; (scalar tests cover the exact bytes); query keys
with regex metacharacters match literally (no regex engine on
untrusted input); schema_of_csv('') gives STRUCT<_c0: STRING> where
Spark itself fails with INTERNAL_ERROR.

…_of_csv
parse_url now searches the query with Spark's (\&|^)key=([^&]*) pattern,
with the key as a Java regular expression compiled through the regexp
functions' translator (group 2 of the first match; one compile per
distinct key). An invalid key pattern is INTERNAL_ERROR, as Spark throws
an untyped PatternSyntaxException there. All semantics were checked
against real Spark 4.2.0 runs.
schema_of_csv of an empty literal is now INTERNAL_ERROR: Spark's
evaluator asserts the parsed record is not null and fails the query the
same way during constant folding. Tokenizer failures now carry a stable
per-cause message instead of the tokenizer error's debug form.
The schema_of_csv analyzer path only resolves the one-argument form; the
two-argument options form stays rejected at the signature. A kept call
has no scalar binding and fails at execution binding instead. Case
variants resolve through the case-insensitive registry lookup.
Tests pin the Spark-checked rows: regex metachar keys, invalid key
patterns, url_encode/url_decode implicit casts, unknown part names,
upper-case SCHEMA_OF_CSV, and the empty literal.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds parse_url and try_parse_url scalar functions, including URI parsing and query-key matching. It also adds schema_of_csv validation, CSV literal schema inference, and analyzer resolution that binds eligible calls as inferred DDL strings.
Changes: CSV Schema Inference
Layer / File(s)
Summary
CSV call validation and registration crates/krishiv-functions/src/registry/{csv.rs,defs.rs,mod.rs,tests.rs}, crates/krishiv-functions/src/signature.rs, crates/krishiv-functions/src/python_wrappers/table.rs
The registry validates schema_of_csv arguments and declares evaluator execution. Registry tests cover accepted inputs, errors, and execution mode. The Python wrapper excludes schema_of_csv because it does not support its options map.
CSV literal inference and DDL rendering crates/krishiv-io/src/csv/{infer.rs,mod.rs,tests.rs}
CSV utilities infer a DDL struct from a literal record and render supported types. Tests cover inferred schemas and error cases.
Analyzer resolution of CSV schemas crates/krishiv-plan/Cargo.toml, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/exprs.rs, crates/krishiv-session/tests/url_csv_functions.rs
For one-argument calls whose input folds to a string, the analyzer binds inferred DDL as a string literal. Session tests cover integration, validation errors, and session-variable input.
URL Functions
Layer / File(s)
Summary
URL signatures and scalar registration crates/krishiv-functions/src/registry/{url.rs,defs.rs,mod.rs,tests.rs}, crates/krishiv-functions/src/registry/tests/text.rs, crates/krishiv-functions/src/scalar/{mod.rs,tests/mod.rs}, crates/krishiv-functions/src/python_wrappers/table.rs
The registry declares URL function signatures, and the scalar family registers the implementations. Registry tests check argument shapes, return types, and availability.
URI parsing and query-key matching crates/krishiv-functions/src/scalar/{url.rs,regex.rs,regex/java.rs}, crates/krishiv-functions/src/scalar/tests/url.rs
The implementation parses URI components and authorities, validates host forms, and matches query keys with translated Java-regex patterns. Tests cover parsing, error modes, query matching, and argument validation.
URL function exposure and validation python/krishiv/sql/_generated_functions.py, python/krishiv/sql/_generated_functions.pyi, python/tests/{_pyspark_signatures.py,test_generated_functions.py}, crates/krishiv-session/tests/{url_csv_functions.rs,string_function_goldens.rs}, tests/spark-golden/known-failures-cases/csv-functions.json
Python wrappers and stubs expose both functions. Python and session tests cover calls and URL behavior. The existing URL golden replay is consolidated in url_csv_functions.rs, and the known-failure list is updated.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#245: Implements map construction and execution, related to the unsupported schema_of_csv options-map form.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#244: Adds struct capabilities related to CSV functions identified as unsupported in this pull request.
Merge Risk: Low · up to ab30d
The remaining concerns are avoidable memory use on URL batches and reduced protection against codec output-name regressions. They are bounded follow-ups rather than a demonstrated block to using the new functions.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to ab30d
The reviewed paths perform local parsing without granting network, filesystem, or credential access. Existing regex controls are reused. Resource isolation for very large or concurrent requests remains unverified, so the assessment is low risk rather than minimal.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is computational: SQL callers control CSV strings processed during analysis and URL strings and patterns processed during scalar evaluation. These paths do not demonstrate additional resource authority. Their maximum service-wide or cross-tenant availability impact cannot be determined without deployment and query-budget evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Attacker-supplied URL keys reach regex translation and compilation, but the combined pattern is subject to the existing 65,536-character translator limit and matching uses the shared 1,000,000-step backtracking limit. Limit failures return errors rather than continuing without the control.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The inspected transitions are locally owned. CSV inference finishes successfully before replacing the bound expression; errors return before replacement. URL output and the single-entry last-key cache are local to each evaluation, and a replacement pattern must compile successfully before entering the cache. An error discards local work rather than publishing partial output or changing shared persistent state.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate that query-level byte, work, and concurrency budgets cover analysis-time CSV inference. Default CSV options cap column count at 20,480 but leave field length unlimited; an explicit planning budget would make containment independent of caller-controlled literal size. This is a hardening proposal, not an established denial-of-service finding.

Resolves the registry and family-table conflicts, drops the url_encode/url_decode/try_url_decode bindings that main now provides in the string-codec family, handles a missing query for a keyed parse_url as NULL, adds the Python wrappers for parse_url and try_parse_url, regenerates the registry-matrix fixtures and removes the golden cases that now pass.

…v keeps its shown form
parse_url and try_parse_url append each part, or the query value, straight
into a StringBuilder instead of building an owned String per row; the key
search returns a slice of the query. schema_of_csv over a folded value no
longer replaces the form the call already shows, and a test pins that for a
session variable.

The old replay checked both rows and struct<...> field names for 11 codec statements. The replacement run() helper checks rows only, and names() covers only two codec statements. A wrong output name in the other nine codec cases can pass undetected. Add matching names() assertions for those cases.
