feat(functions): lambdas with transform, filter, exists and forall - #247
Lambda expressions and the first higher-order functions over arrays.
Functions added: transform (one- and two-variable lambdas), filter, exists, forall, plus the minimal array(...) constructor these functions need (common element type) with its Python wrapper.
New plan expression nodes Lambda and LambdaVar, encoded behind the new lambda_functions plan-codec feature (golden and reader-refusal test included).
The analyzer binds lambdas with a scope stack (shadowing, element and index types, constant lambdas wrapped as Spark prints them, Spark's error classes and texts).
Execution is vectorised: each list column is flattened once, the lambda body is evaluated once over the flattened batch (captured outer columns repeat per element through the list offsets), and the lists are rebuilt from the original offsets. There is no per-element interpreter loop; the list kernels only reshape Arrow ListArrays.
exists/forall nullability follows Spark (array nullability, body nullability or null elements); lambda variable matching follows spark.sql.caseSensitive in both analysis and execution.
The golden harness renders nested (array/map/struct) results.
Golden counts (listed failing statements)
Session golden ratchet: 12080 before, 12010 after (70 removed, 0 added).
Registry-matrix and type-coercion manifests shrink accordingly; several array() statements in other goldens pass now.
Not included
aggregate/reduce, zip_with, map_filter, map_zip_with, transform_keys, transform_values, array_sort with a comparator, Python Column lambdas, correlated references and scalar subqueries in lambda bodies. forall over NULL arrays and the null-mark folding of exists/forall follow Spark's rules but no recorded run pins them.
Verification
cargo xtask precheck passes except the dist-binary size budget, which compares against a baseline older than current main.
…, part 1)
Higher-order functions over arrays, working from the largest golden
group down: transform (15 statements), filter, exists and forall.
Lambdas lower to a new plan node; the analyzer binds lambda variables
against the argument's array element type and resolves bodies with
outer columns visible (Spark's NamedLambdaVariable, shadowing
included). A non-lambda argument is a constant lambda, as Spark
analyzes it, including its error texts. Execution flattens each list
column once, evaluates the body over the flattened batch, and rebuilds
lists from the original offsets; kernels work on Arrow ListArrays
directly, never one Rust value per row.
Also adds the minimal array() constructor these functions need
(common element type), the lambda_functions plan-codec feature, the
Python wrapper for array(), and nested (array/map/struct) rendering in
the golden harness so result goldens can pass.
Golden higher-order-functions: 83 failing before, 60 after (23 fixed,
none newly failing); registry-matrix and coercion manifests shrink
accordingly, and several array() statements elsewhere pass now.
Left for follow-ups: aggregate/reduce, zip_with, map_filter,
transform_keys/transform_values, map_zip_with, array_sort with
comparator, Python Column lambdas, correlated references and scalar
subqueries in lambda bodies.
Unverified against a Spark run: exists/forall null-mark folding (kept
as Spark's source shape) and forall over null arrays; the constant
comparator short-circuit of array_sort is deferred with that function.

…of honors case sensitivity
exists/forall result is NULLABLE per Spark's three-valued default:
nullable when the array is, when the lambda body is, or when the
array may hold NULL elements. Regenerated registry-matrix removes
all the boolean-not-null divergences except exists over an
IS-NULL body, where the stated rule over-approximates Spark.
The executor resolves lambda variables with the analyzer's case
rule (case flag from spark.sql.caseSensitive at planning; the
flattening is fixed then, so it is not plan data) instead of an
unconditional case-insensitive match, and offset arithmetic in the
flattening uses checked_sub to internal errors.
Tests: caseSensitive=true resolution, scalar-subquery-in-lambda
rejection, LargeList rejection, malformed offsets erroring in the
list kernels; registry unit tests for the new nullability.

The source guard keeps unsafe in dedicated helper modules; the offset
checks stay covered by the kernels' checked conversions.

…renderers
Add session SQL tests for captured outer columns, nested lambdas,
two-variable transform with index, NULL lists/elements and error
classes; kernel unit tests for short/long values and row-count
overflow; analyzer pretty/key/rewrite tests for lambdas and their
variables; encode/decode roundtrip coverage for lambda nodes; and
testkit unit tests for nested list/map/struct cell rendering.

Summary
Lambda expression model and analysis crates/krishiv-plan/src/expr.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/*, crates/krishiv-plan/src/walk.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/display.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/*
Plan expressions now represent lambdas and bound lambda variables. The analyzer resolves nested lambda scopes, validates parameters, and rejects unsupported lambda placements and explicit lambda bodies containing aggregates or window functions.
Array function signatures and nullability crates/krishiv-functions/src/registry/*, crates/krishiv-functions/src/scalar/*, crates/krishiv-functions/src/python_wrappers/table.rs, python/krishiv/sql/*, python/tests/_pyspark_signatures.py
The registry adds array, transform, filter, exists, and forall with result typing and nullability rules. Scalar column bindings now carry nullability. The Python SQL API exposes array and marks the lambda functions unavailable.
Arrow list kernels crates/krishiv-kernels/src/list*, crates/krishiv-kernels/src/lib.rs, crates/krishiv-kernels/Cargo.toml
New list kernels construct arrays and implement transform, filter, exists, and forall. They validate offsets and lengths and handle null lists, null marks, and empty lists.
The evaluator compiles lambda bodies over flattened rows containing captured columns, lambda values, list elements, and optional indexes. It sends results to the corresponding list kernels.
Lambda lowering and plan encoding crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-plan-codec/src/*, crates/krishiv-plan-codec/tests/*, proto/krishiv/plan/v1/plan.proto, crates/krishiv-plan/src/encode.rs
SQL lowering and plan codecs now encode and decode lambda expressions and bound lambda variables. The feature registry identifies lambda constructs and checks reader support.
Session behavior and result conversion crates/krishiv-session/tests/*, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/session_engine.rs, tests/spark-golden/known-failures-cases/*
Session tests cover higher-order SQL behavior, error cases, output types, and variable case sensitivity. Golden result conversion now handles nested Arrow lists, maps, and structs. Spark known-failure case lists are updated.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#244: Both changes update BindArg::Column to carry type and nullability; this PR uses that metadata for array and higher-order function typing.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#246: Both changes update nested Arrow result conversion in the session golden-test engine.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#209: It introduces the nested array type representation and Arrow list mapping used by this PR’s array functions.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 78a5d
The new higher-order array functions can return results that differ from Spark: exists and forall give false/true instead of NULL when a predicate yields NULL. Under case-sensitive settings, nested lambdas can bind the wrong variable, and errors on some sliced batches can surface as internal errors. These should be fixed before merge. Plan encoding and kernel test-coverage gaps should be closed in the same pass.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 78a5d
The new functionality preserves scoped variable binding and rejects incompatible readers. A sliced-input handling issue can disrupt query execution and error recovery, but no privilege expansion or cross-user exposure was demonstrated. Security coverage remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · observed: Flattened lambda evaluation does not consistently respect sliced-list boundaries. With a nonzero first offset, element columns contain the prefix through the absolute final offset, while captured and index columns contain only the active slice's elements. Mixed-source bodies can therefore fail batch construction, and row-at-a-time recovery re-enters this same path through RecordBatch slices. Element-only bodies also evaluate preceding child values outside the active slice. This weakens row-scoped failure isolation; no cross-user disclosure or process-wide failure was demonstrated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected new execution surface processes array data and captured columns supplied to the executing query. No new service identity, credential authority or cross-user access path was demonstrated by these paths; deployment-wide exposure remains outside the inspected evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Lambda parameters receive fresh bound identities. Lookup is innermost-first, respects configured case sensitivity and shadows only unqualified names. The body-resolution frame is popped before ordinary errors propagate, and each plan resolution starts with an empty lambda stack.

bodies through on_big_stack every RESOLVE_STEP levels, following Resolver::rel’s
existing pattern.
- Around line 1038-1046: Update DefaultAnalyzer.analyze to preserve
already-bound ExprNode::Lambda values when they appear under a resolved
higher-order function, while keeping the ExprNode::Lambda rejection for unbound

so Root/Index/Element columns agree and per-row error search keeps
the user error instead of an internal one.
- plan, codec, exec: lambda parameters carry stable AttrId identities

allocation skips.
- plan encode: lambda nodes use unused tags 15/16; encoding version 7.

- plan analyzer: bound lambdas survive re-analysis; subqueries resolve
without enclosing lambda scopes; expression binding hops stacks
every RESOLVE_STEP levels; id allocation covers lambda variables.

The scalar family list keeps array first and gains url. The registry tests keep
both the HOF and the moment-aggregate tests, and the codec registry both
lambda_functions and legacy_statistical_aggregate. The HOF test environment
sets main's new legacy_statistical_aggregate flag.

System calls cannot be simulated consistently and are left out of the measure. The reported value understates the real cost. Switch to the Walltime instrument to measure them.
BindArg::Column takes main's field name (ty). The lambda proto fields
move to Expr numbers 9 and 10 (main's struct field took 8), the
lambda_functions golden is re-blessed, and the plan-codec feature walk
uses main's exprs_of. The registry-matrix manifest, the golden ratchet
and the datetime calendar tally are regenerated for array and
named_struct both running.

Main added a partition argument to PhysExpr::eval and EvalEnv::seed_salt; the lambda evaluator forwards the caller's partition to its array and body. The registry matrix manifest drops the rand/randn/random/randstr/typeof/uniform mismatches that array() support resolves.
