Native Rust scalar UDFs, end to end: the ScalarUdf trait in krishiv-udf-sdk, a session UdfLibrary and SessionFunctions registry, FunctionId::Udf { name, version } as a plan reference, execution through the worker's library, and Session::register_udf (re-exported by krishiv).
Task: P2-T060a (unit 1).
Plans reference UDFs by value. The plan holds (name, version) and never a trait object. Name and version enter the canonical key and structural hash, and the plan codec gains the semantic feature rust_udf with goldens in golden/rust_udf/. A worker without the UDF fails with KRISHIV_UDF_NOT_AVAILABLE naming name@version (SQLSTATE 39000).
Resolution follows Spark's search path. A built-in wins over a same-name session UDF. system.session.f and session.f reach UDFs only, and system.builtin.f reaches built-ins only. Unknown names keep the UNRESOLVED_ROUTINE text. Grouping rewrites rebind a UDF call with its qualifier, so session.upper(s) ... GROUP BY ROLLUP(s) keeps the UDF.
Typing. A UDF's Signature maps onto the analyzer's existing coercion, so implicit casts match a built-in with the same inputs. The UDF never casts its own arguments.
Execution. Calls go through one wrapper that:
checks argument and result count, type, length and nullability;
broadcasts all-literal arguments;
unions null masks for Strict null handling;
catches panics around every trait call.
Any user error, contract break or panic becomes FAILED_EXECUTE_UDF (39000).
Registration fails loudly.register_udf returns Result: a panicking, empty or dotted name is FAILED_EXECUTE_UDF. Every registration changes the library version, which is part of the analysis fingerprint.
Constant folding applies only to deterministic UDFs with all-literal arguments, through the same wrapper. A folding failure surfaces at execution.
Spark 4.2 ground truth (checked on Spark): registering a session upper still leaves SELECT upper('a') = A; system.builtin.upper resolves; unknown functions give UNRESOLVED_ROUTINE (42883).
Sessions accept native Rust scalar functions through a small SDK (krishiv-udf-sdk): a trait with name, version, signature, return type, properties and a batch invoke over Arrow arrays plus a plain context (partition index, ANSI flag, session time zone).
Plans reference UDFs by value (FunctionId::Udf { name, version }), which enters the canonical encoding (encoding version 5) and the structural hash. Resolution goes through a SessionFunctions registry wrapping the built-ins and the session library: bare names prefer built-ins (Spark's search path), while system.session.f and session.f reach UDFs only and system.builtin.f reaches built-ins only; unknown names keep UNRESOLVED_ROUTINE. The analyzer maps signatures onto its arity and input types so implicit casts match same-input built-ins. Execution binds calls in krishiv-functions with the same checks as built-ins (argument checks, all-literal broadcast, result length/type/nullability), unions null masks for Strict, and maps every user error, contract break or panic to FAILED_EXECUTE_UDF; a missing UDF on the executing side is the new KRISHIV_UDF_NOT_AVAILABLE naming name@version. Constant folding covers deterministic calls of literals in the analyzer (failures become Constant::Error) and the optimizer (failures stay in the plan), through the same binding. The plan codec gains the rust_udf semantic feature.
Search-path precedence follows the Spark 4.2 run cited in the task (built-in wins, system.builtin qualification, UNRESOLVED_ROUTINE text); not re-verified with a new Spark run here. InvokeContext.partition is always 0: the engine has no stable partition ids. Session::register_udf takes the UDF by value; aggregate UDFs, dynamic library loading and UDF access to sessions remain out of scope.

…LSTATE, codec walk
Strict UDFs declaring non-nullable results now widen to nullable when
any argument may be null, since strict evaluation returns null without
invoking. Previously a non-nullable declaration could emit NULL into a
NOT NULL column.
Built-in conditionals (nvl/ifnull, assert_true with its default
message, ntile folding) now apply only when the resolved entry is a
built-in, not a session UDF. Bare names still resolve built-ins first
(Spark search path), while session.system/session qualified calls reach
the UDF, for both SQL and DataFrame calls.
All UDF trait calls go through krishiv_udf_sdk::guard_call, so panics
in signature, return_field, properties, version and invoke become
FAILED_EXECUTE_UDF (SQLSTATE 39000) instead of unwinding. The trait
docs promise this.
KRISHIV_UDF_NOT_AVAILABLE moves from SQLSTATE KD002 (used by Spark for
unrelated errors) to KD003, unused in both the vendored Spark registry
and the KRISHIV_* classes.
The plan-codec feature walk lists every PhysNode and ExprNode variant
explicitly instead of a wildcard, so a new node kind cannot silently
skip rust_udf detection. Added negative tests that non-UDF plans lack
the feature and UDFs in filters, scan filters and join residuals
require it.
Spark-compat: built-ins win unqualified, qualified UDF calls reach the
UDF, matching Spark 4.2 search-path behaviour for upper. FAILED_EXECUTE_UDF
keeps SQLSTATE 39000 with function, signature and reason.
Unverified: full Python suite (ran test_expr and test_sql_facade only,
34 passed); whole-workspace run left to CI.

…le test, guarded trait calls
The grouping rewrite retyped calls above a changed grouping key by
rebinding them under the bare function name. For a qualified session
UDF shadowing a built-in (session.upper over ROLLUP(s)) the bare name
resolves to the built-in, so the query silently ran the wrong
function. A UDF call now rebinds qualified (system.session.f) while
built-ins keep the bare form. A Rollup/Cube/Grouping Sets test with a
shadowing session.upper fails without the fix. The other rebuild
sites were audited: star expansion preserves the call, literal
helpers and the grouping constructors only build built-ins, and the
grouping() rewrite is unqualified by design.
The ntile regression test only used the literal 5, which folds the
same either way. The difference lives one level down: the analyzer
must keep a UDF's arguments as written while the built-in folds its
bucket count (the optimizer folds 1+1 either way, so no
result-level test can observe it). This is now checked by a
folded_ntile unit test in krishiv-plan that fails when the
built-in-only guard is removed; the session end-to-end test keeps
covering qualified routing and points at it.
The two remaining unguarded trait calls now go through guard_call:
UdfLibrary::register leaves the library unchanged when name()
panics (there is no name to register under, and production code
denies panics), with a unit test that fails without the guard; the
return-type mismatch message in krishiv-exec's compile_udf resolves
the name through guard_call instead of unwinding (that branch is
unreachable by construction, so it is defense in depth with no
observable test).
Spark-compat notes: search-path precedence is unchanged; the
KRISHIV_UDF_NOT_AVAILABLE SQLSTATE stays KD003 as previously
reviewed.
Unverified: the Python suite (no Python test exercises
Rust-UDF-plus-grouping; the Python surface is unchanged) and a
whole-workspace run, left to CI.

UdfLibrary::register silently dropped a UDF whose name() panicked, so Session::register_udf appeared to succeed and the call failed later with UNRESOLVED_ROUTINE. Registration now returns Result<(), UdfError>: a panicking name, an empty name, or a name containing a dot or a backtick (which can never be called by name) is an error. Session::register_udf returns Result<(), KrishivError>, mapping the failure to FAILED_EXECUTE_UDF through the executor's failed_execute helper (function name unknown when there is none).
KRISHIV_UDF_NOT_AVAILABLE used SQLSTATE KD003, reserved for data-source errors. A UDF missing on the executing worker is an external-routine invocation failure, so it now uses 39000.
Signed-off-by: techysneha14 <343708768+shehatathe@users.noreply.github.com>
A UDF call is identified by its name and version, as the plan reference
and the design require, so its version must enter the canonical encoding
and the structural hash: otherwise a re-registered UDF would share a key
with the version it replaced. The merge with main had dropped it to keep
the recursive expression encoder within its deep-plan stack budget; the
function identity is now written by an out-of-line helper, which keeps
the encoder frame small with the version included.

Walkthrough
Adds a public Rust scalar UDF SDK and session registration API. Plans identify UDFs by name and version. Analyzers resolve calls, workers execute them, and analyzer and optimizer passes fold eligible deterministic calls with literal arguments.
Changes: Native Rust Scalar UDF Support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
UDF SDK and library crates/krishiv-udf-sdk/*
Adds the scalar UDF contract, invocation context, error handling, and a session-scoped library with case-insensitive and versioned lookup.
UDF plan identity and transport crates/krishiv-plan/src/function.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/encode.rs, crates/krishiv-plan-codec/src/*, proto/krishiv/plan/v1/plan.proto
Adds versioned UDF identities to plans and protobuf. Encoding, decoding, feature detection, and tests now handle those identities.
Session registration and function resolution crates/krishiv-session/*, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/*, crates/krishiv-plan/src/expr.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs
Adds Session::register_udf and SessionFunctions. Function resolution supports session-qualified calls, preserves built-in precedence for bare names, and keeps UDF calls distinct from built-in rewrites.
Worker binding and execution crates/krishiv-functions/src/scalar/*, crates/krishiv-exec/src/*, crates/krishiv-common/krishiv-error-classes.json
Passes the session UDF library through planning and worker environments. Binds and invokes UDFs with null handling and result-contract checks. Adds an unavailable-UDF error and an execution benchmark.
Folds eligible deterministic calls with literal arguments using the registered UDF version and session settings. Adds tests for folding, nondeterminism, missing versions, and unsupported cases.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#203: Adds analyzer handling for qualified calls and named arguments, which shares qualifier rules with session UDF resolution.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#177: Changes scalar expression compilation in the planner, which is also where UDF compilation is added.
Session UDFs whose names collide with certain built-ins can be silently rewritten or fail. Strict UDFs can receive untyped NULL, and some deterministic UDF calls are not folded. These are narrow and fixable, but should be addressed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to bd978
Native UDFs are installed explicitly into a session, not loaded from SQL or a plan. The review nevertheless found gaps in how qualified calls and replacement implementations preserve the intended function identity, plus a null-handling contract gap. The available evidence does not establish a broader privilege escalation.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A builtin-qualified call can bind a session UDF when the built-in lookup misses. The single-name analyzer lookup discards the qualifier and falls back to the session registry, contrary to the new builtins-only namespace contract. Security impact depends on whether a caller can register a UDF in the session used to analyze that call; SQL alone cannot install one.
Medium · architecture · inferred: Re-registering different code under an unchanged name and version can make an already-built plan execute the replacement. Registration updates the shared library, whereas the plan and worker binding carry no registration epoch or immutable implementation reference.
Medium · reliability · inferred: The strict wrapper checks physical null masks. A logically null argument such as an untyped NullArray can therefore reach a UDF despite the SDK contract that strict functions never see nulls. A resulting panic is caught, but the query may fail instead of producing the promised null result.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — SQL and transported plans can select and invoke code already installed in the executing session, but the inspected paths do not let them install a native implementation. The demonstrated scope is the session and workers supplied with its library, not independently established cross-tenant reach.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — If a principal can register a UDF in a shared session, a builtin-qualified call to a name absent from the built-in registry can select that UDF; no broader authorization path was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Planning-time folding executes session-installed native code on eligible literals. Determinism is reported by the UDF, while binding and invocation use guarded calls; the plan itself contains no native implementation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Same-version replacement weakens plan-to-implementation identity across repeated registration, while physical-only strict masking weakens the promised containment of null inputs. Ordinary version mismatches and invocation panics have explicit failure paths.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve the full qualifier through built-in lookup; reject or explicitly invalidate same-version replacements for previously built plans; and derive strict masks from logical nulls.

Built-in special cases still match a session UDF by name.
This PR guards assert_true, mask defaults, locate, named_struct, Conditional and ntile with is_builtin_entry. Several other name-based branches do not have that guard. A qualified session UDF with one of these names now reaches them and gets silently rewritten:
typeof (line 1494):session.typeof(x) is replaced by the type-name literal. The UDF never runs.
schema_of_csv (line 1486):session.schema_of_csv('a') is replaced by a DDL literal.
mask (line 1487):check_mask_replacements runs on a call whose arguments were not expanded. A one-argument UDF then fails with "a mask call without its replacements".
struct (line 1370):struct_names rewrites the call to an unqualified named_struct. That call resolves to the built-in, not the UDF.
Each case gives a wrong result or a spurious error for a call the PR says must reach the UDF.
Fix: apply is_builtin_entry(&entry) to each of these checks. Use entry.id.name() for mask, not lookup_name.

Strict UDF masking now uses logical nulls so Null, dictionary and
run-end values never reach a strict UDF. The optimizer repeats UDF
folding with the rewrite batch to a fixed point capped at the batch
limit. Session qualifiers are honored for aggregate detection and
higher-order dispatch, and builtin-qualified calls no longer resolve
to session UDFs in either the lookup path or the pre-check. Analyzer
UDF folding folds arguments first so implicit casts and nested calls
fold like built-ins. The codec feature walk drops its duplicated
loops and checks one node per expression. Tests cover versioned,
rewritten and qualified UDF cases.
