create-agent-workspace

A standalone agent skill that scaffolds a new agent workspace from agent-workspace-template into an empty directory, then walks you through setup.

It exists because GitHub's "Use this template" flow creates a new pre-filled repo, whereas some flows create an empty repo first, then push. This skill lays the template into an empty directory (preserving your empty git repo), so it fits that flow. See ADR 0005 in the template for the rationale.

Install

Installed globally via the skills.sh CLI, so an agent can run it in a directory that has no template files yet:

npx skills@latest add NickMoignard/create-agent-workspace

Or, in Claude Code, as a plugin:

/plugin marketplace add NickMoignard/create-agent-workspace
/plugin install create-agent-workspace@nickmoignard

Use

In the empty directory that should become the workspace:

cd my-new-workspace
claude "/create-agent-workspace scaffold this workspace and walk me through setup"
codex "/create-agent-workspace scaffold this workspace and walk me through setup"

The skill:

  1. runs bootstrap.sh to fetch the template tarball and lay its files in (no template git history; drops the template-only README + bootstrap ADR),
  2. asks for the workspace name/purpose, initial projects, and default skills,
  3. writes a workspace README, and
  4. runs onboarding (/setup-homebrew → /setup-asdf → /setup-beads → /setup-projects → make setup).

What's here

.claude-plugin/ # Claude Code plugin + marketplace manifests
skills/create-agent-workspace/
├── SKILL.md # the skill
├── bootstrap.sh # mechanical tarball scaffold (also runnable directly)
└── seeds/README.workspace.md # README template the skill customizes

bootstrap.sh is usable on its own if you just want the file copy:

bash skills/create-agent-workspace/bootstrap.sh /path/to/empty-dir
# override source: TEMPLATE_REPO=owner/repo TEMPLATE_REF=main bash bootstrap.sh .
