Fixes #1704

Owner: Dev-3
Written-by: Dev-3
Reviewer: Birfy
Branch: dev/3-proto-safe-project-ids
Base: 2213b4c (the tree verify ran against;
the tip is rebased onto it). Main moved four times while this was being written:
d98d98ee = #1697 and 742e06cc = #1699 before the first tip; then 554d939e
= #1703, which changed core/src/host/store.js and re-rendered
patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch, so the branch was rebased onto it;
then 2213b4ca = #1707, whose source change is three lines in
core/src/host/tools.js and which re-rendered 0002 again but leaves
core/src/host/store.js byte-identical, so that rebase is mechanical: the only
overlap is the generated mirror, rebuilt from the rebased base with the
generator's own transform. docs/subsystems/core-host.md was edited by #1699 and
#1707 in rows of their own issues (a retired-Bot row in #1707), and the
Docs-not-needed: reason below is unchanged by both: the documented Project and
roster behaviour still does not change, so this branch leaves that page alone.)

What and why

state.projects, state.bots, state.rooms are plain objects, so a wire id of
__proto__ resolved through the prototype chain to Object.prototype, which
isRecord accepts. On d5347032 that was four live symptoms, all reproduced on
that base:

  • project-read {id: '__proto__'} answered {} instead of { project: null }.
  • project-bind {kind: 'bot', id: '__proto__', projectId: <real>} answered
    ok: true and ran member.projectId = project.id — i.e. it wrote projectId
    onto Object.prototype. From then on every unbound Bot and group reported
    that Project, while state.json carried no bots.<id>.projectId own key, so
    the binding was a phantom that a restart cleared.
  • findBot('__proto__') returned Object.prototype (its .remote is
    undefined, so it looked like a team Bot).
  • findRooms('__proto__') returned it as a room.

The fix is one own-key read, ownEntry(table, id), for the four call sites the
issue names — projectOfId, projectMemberOf, findBot, findRooms (plus the
state.projectRuns read in projectOfMember, same shape) — so an id that is not
an own key resolves as absent and never as a prototype member. The one binding a
request writes (state.projectRuns[id] = project.id in bindProject) went
through setEntry, because table['__proto__'] = value is swallowed by the
prototype setter and would have answered ok: true while storing nothing. That
run half now has its own regression test (below); a Reflect.set mutation in
setEntry fails it, so a response-only assertion cannot pass the branch.
authz.js, endpoints and field names are untouched: project-read,
project-bind and project-of stay "signed-in actor", and the tables are still
plain objects (one convention for the file, not two).

Scope: core/src/host/store.js, two tests, one changelog fragment, and the
regenerated mirrors for the two touched core files. Docs-not-needed: the
documented behaviour does not change — an id that is not a member resolves
null / not-found, which docs/subsystems/core-host.md already says; this makes
the code match it instead of resolving through Object.prototype.

Acceptance

# criterion evidence
1 Red first on d5347032 with exactly the symptoms above core/test/projects.test.js on the unmodified source: not ok 5 — actual: { project: {} }, expected { project: null }; the failure message carries the whole read (project-bind ok: true, both unbound members reporting the Project, Object.prototype has own projectId: true, ({}).projectId: "project-…", state.json bots.b has own projectId: false). core/test/store.test.js: not ok 14 — findBot(__proto__) [Object: null prototype] {} vs undefined. Full log at the tip below.
2 project-read / project-bind / project-of with __proto__ and with real-but-unbound ids: no Object.prototype write, not-found / null Same test at the tip, plus the probe below run on the base tree and the tip tree: Object.hasOwn(Object.prototype, 'projectId') true → false, 'projectId' in {} true → false, ({}).projectId project-… → null, bind {ok: true} → {ok: false, code: 'bot/not-found'}, and both unbound members project → null. state.json bots.a / bots.b have no own projectId on either tree (the phantom is the point).
3 findBot('__proto__') → undefined; real names unchanged core/test/store.test.js's new test asserts findBot('__proto__') === undefined, findRooms('__proto__') empty, and keeps findBot('a') / findRooms('Ops') answering the seeded Bot and group. No existing findBot/findRooms test changed.
5 A run binding is stored under an own key, and the test fails if the write goes back to Reflect.set core/test/projects.test.js new case: project-bind {kind: 'run', id: '__proto__'} must leave an own '__proto__' key holding that Project, keep Object.getPrototypeOf(state.projectRuns) === Object.prototype, and leave Object.hasOwn(Object.prototype, 'projectId') / 'projectId' in {} false. Red on the base, and red again under the setEntry → Reflect.set mutation.
4 verify exit 0, ds-bot-patches check green, core/ mirrors updated in the same commit Counts below; ok 10 patches apply cleanly in order, ok core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/, and #978's git-free-applier equivalence test passes on the new mirror bytes.

The post-fix probe, same calls and same in-process reads:

"project-read {id:\"__proto__\"}": { "ok": true, "value": { "project": null } },
"project-bind {kind:\"bot\", id:\"__proto__\"}": { "ok": false, "code": "bot/not-found" },
"project-of unbound bot b": { "project": null },
"project-of unbound group r1": { "project": null },
"Object.hasOwn(Object.prototype, \"projectId\")": false,
"\"projectId\" in {}": false,
"({}).projectId": null,
"state.json bots.b has own projectId": false

Red first

Worktree at d5347032 with only the two test files changed, before any
implementation change:

# tests 5 / pass 4 / fail 1        (core/test/projects.test.js)
not ok 5 - an id that is not an own key resolves as absent and never writes Object.prototype (#1704)
  error: '{"project-read __proto__":{},"project-bind __proto__":{"ok":true,"value":{"project":{…}}},
           "project-of bot __proto__":{…},"project-of unbound bot b":{…},
           "project-of unbound group r1":{…},"Object.prototype has own projectId":true,
           "({}).projectId":"project-c1028e9a-…","state.json bots.b has own projectId":false}'
    + actual: { project: {} }
    - expected: { project: null }

# tests 14 / pass 13 / fail 1      (core/test/store.test.js)
not ok 14 - a roster id that is not an own key finds no Bot and no group (#1704)
  error: findBot(__proto__) answered Object.prototype
    + actual: [Object: null prototype] {}
    - expected: undefined

The run half is red on 554d939e with only core/test/projects.test.js extended,
no implementation change (that base differs from d5347032 only by #1703's board
read, which this test does not touch):

# tests 6 / pass 5 / fail 1        (core/test/projects.test.js)
not ok 5 - a run binds under an own key, not through the prototype chain (#1704)
  error: '{"project-bind run __proto__":{"ok":true,"value":{"project":{…}}},
           "project-of run __proto__":{"ok":true,"value":{"project":null}},
           "state.projectRuns own __proto__":false,"state.projectRuns __proto__":{},
           "state.projectRuns prototype is Object.prototype":true,
           "Object.prototype has own projectId":false,"'projectId' in {}":false}'
    false !== true

state.projectRuns['__proto__'] = id is taken by the __proto__ setter, so the
request answers ok: true and stores nothing: the response is not the evidence,
the own key is.

At the tip the same files are 6/6 and 14/14.

Mutation check (the run half is what the test covers)

With the test in place, setEntry was temporarily changed back to
(table, id, value) => Reflect.set(table, id, value):

  • mutated: the new test fails in the same shape as the base red —
    state.projectRuns own __proto__: false, project-of run __proto__ →
    { project: null }, while project-bind still answers ok: true
    (# tests 1 / pass 0 / fail 1).
  • restored: # tests 1 / pass 1 / fail 0, and projects.test.js 6/6.

A plain assignment and Reflect.set are indistinguishable from the response
alone; the own-key assertion is what separates them.

Mirrors

core/src/host/store.js is a tracked ds-bot file, so it lives in
patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch; core/test/store.test.js is in
patches/ds-bot/0014-flybot-branding.patch, and the new test in
core/test/projects.test.js is a whole file under patches/ds-bot/files/.
On this base 0002 also carries #1703's board section and #1707's tools.js section, so
the store.js section was rebuilt on the rebased base (not by hand, and not by a whole
generate). Those
sections were rebuilt with the generator's own transform
(git diff --no-index + its header normalisation), then validated by
node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check and #978's applier-equivalence test.
I did not run a whole generate: on a pristine base it already reformats four
unrelated patch files (4466 changed lines at d5347032) because this box's git
renders hunk headers differently from the committed ones — pre-existing drift,
not this change, so the diff keeps to the files this PR touches.

What I ran

  • TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/projects.test.js test/store.test.js
    in core/, tests-only on a pristine 2213b4ca (/home/xuke/.dsh/bot/workspace/v1708b)
    — red: 20 tests, 17 pass, 3 fail (projects.test.js not ok 5 {project: {}}
    vs {project: null} with Object.prototype has own projectId: true, not ok 6
    the run binding: ok: true, project-of null, state.projectRuns has no own
    __proto__, Object.prototype has own projectId: true; store.test.js not ok 20
    the roster read). At the tip: 6/6 and 14/14.
  • TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test --test-name-pattern="run binds under an own key" test/projects.test.js
    with setEntry mutated to Reflect.set — 1 test, 0 pass, 1 fail; the failure is
    the write itself (project-bind ok: true, project-of null, state.projectRuns
    has no own __proto__, Object.prototype untouched), not a missing function;
    restored — 1 pass, 0 fail.
  • TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=2213b4ca3ad26e0372446fb8eb8d3973835d7150 npm run verify —
    exit 0: core 1995,
    plugins/social 539, plugins/tree 125, plugins/timeline 129,
    plugins/workflow 275, .github/scripts 549, interop 37, live-e2e 24, all
    fail 0; arch-docs: OK (7 changed file(s)) (via the Docs-not-needed: trailer, which
    is in this body and in the branch commit); ok ds-bot/ = Fei2411/DeepSeek-Bot@2b10c70,
    ok 10 patches apply cleanly in order, ok core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/;
    oxlint 0 errors (65/36/9/2/16/1 warnings — a pristine 554d939e core lint is
    also 65, so none of them is new).
  • node .github/scripts/changelog.mjs check — 39 fragments, well formed.
  • node --test .github/scripts/ds-bot-patches.test.mjs — 10/10 (inside verify),
    including the git-free applier on the new mirror bytes.
  • The probe above on /home/xuke/.dsh/bot/workspace/v1704base (pristine
    d5347032 tree) and on this branch's tree; the tests-only red on
    /home/xuke/.dsh/bot/workspace/v1708b (pristine 2213b4ca).
  • Note for reviewers: the first verify run on this rebased tree hit a timing flake
    in core/test/room-external.test.js:79 (a stop is asked for on the protocol before the signal…, timed out waiting for the child at 4.1 s); that file passes 13/13
    alone and the rerun above is green end to end on the same tree.

Not run: the smoke bench (dev/bench.sh smoke) — store.js is host code, so
CI's suite covers it and no UI path calls these endpoints yet
(grep -rn "project-" core/src/client plugins/*/client.js is empty); no browser
check in the drawer UI (no host here); no npm ci / npm run harness in this
worktree (the shared install is linked, unchanged). No push to main.

Advisory security review — #1708 @ 7a37d278751320472c958464397f026ed8614622

Advisory only, not a gate: the reviewer's own review decides, and I did not write to the frozen branch.

My runs at this tip (base 742e06cc, own worktrees):

  • core/test/projects.test.js + core/test/store.test.js → 19/19 at the tip; the same two files on the base source → 17/19, both #1704 cases red.
  • Mutation A: findBot back to if (state.bots[ref]) … → only the store case red. Mutation B: projectMemberOf back to state.bots[id] / state.rooms[id] → only the projects case red. So both new reads are pinned.
  • Mutation C: setEntry back to a setter-style write (Reflect.set(table, id, value)) → 19/19, all green: the kind:'run' branch this PR changed has no test at this tip. The current test binds kind:'bot' only (core/test/projects.test.js:148-180).
  • Probe in my own harness (install(rt) from core/src/host/store.js, saved state): findBot('__proto__') → undefined, findRooms('__proto__') → [], readProject('__proto__') → null (all fixed), but botOf('__proto__') and roomOf('__proto__') are still Object.prototype, chatOf('__proto__') → '__proto__', and a kind:'run' bind of __proto__ now lands as an own key: state.json gets "projectRuns":{"__proto__":"project-…"}, re-parses as own, and the table's prototype stays intact.

1. Uniformity — every client-supplied id that reaches a table read/write, by state.

Closed by this PR (core/src/host/store.js):

  • projectOfId :371-375, requireProject :376-380 (state.projects)
  • projectMemberOf :381-387 (state.bots / state.rooms)
  • run read :390, run write :425-426 (state.projectRuns)
  • findBot :720-722, findRooms :729-731

Still a plain index read (same class, not touched — reads, not writes):

  • botOf / roomOf core/src/host/store.js:656-657 (state.bots[id], state.rooms[id]) — these are the lookups most endpoints use (update-bot, delete-bot, duplicate-bot, set-main, set-flags, approvals, connectors, delivery).
  • core/src/host/tasks.js:173 find = id => store()[String(id ?? '')] — task-update {id:'__proto__'} reads Object.prototype; stopped only by mayAct's requesterId compare (tasks.js:170).
  • core/src/host/schedules.js:321-322 and :351-352 — state.bots[body.target] / state.rooms[body.target]; stopped by the owner gate in the same request.
  • core/src/host/channel.js:480-481 — state.questions[body.sessionId] (delete of an own-less key is a no-op); the writing twin at :558 is behind the question/session gate.
  • core/src/host/room-membership.js:705, :724, :900 — name-only reads (state.bots[id]?.name).

Already guarded, and why the residual reads above do not write today: core/src/host/authz.js:81 botOwnedBy compares .ownerId, and roomOwnedBy / roomMemberOf / sessionOwnedBy read properties; Object.prototype carries none of them, so every BOT_TARGETED/ROOM_TARGETED/SESSION_TARGETED endpoint refuses __proto__ with bot/forbidden. That is the whole current defence, and it is fragile: a single future write of ownerId/members onto a prototype-resolved record flips it. If you want the rule structural rather than incidental, botOf/roomOf through the same ownEntry (one line each) plus tasks.js:173 is the one-line class completion; not needed for this fix, and I would file it separately rather than widen the diff.

Writes keyed by a wire string: the only ones in the host are state.questions[sessionId] (channel.js:558, gated) and state.projectRuns[id] (store.js:425, now setEntry). I found no remaining ungated table[id] = value on a client id.

2. setEntry / defineProperty hazard. It defines an ordinary own enumerable/writable/configurable data property, so JSON.stringify writes it, JSON.parse re-creates it as an own key, and the prototype of the table is untouched (probe above). Two caveats: (a) any future Set-style copy of that table — Object.assign({}, state.projectRuns), a for…in re-assign — would invoke the __proto__ setter and set a prototype; today only store.js:390/425/426 read or write the table, and load's Object.assign(state, …) (store.js:225) copies top-level keys only, so nothing does it; (b) the table's convention is now "keys are ids, and an id may be named __proto__", which is legal but unusual. A boundary refusal (__proto__/constructor/prototype) would be the other way to close it; own-key reads plus setEntry is the safer of the two, and the test pins the pollution it prevents.

3. Trust boundary and blast radius. project-bind is in TASK_ENDPOINTS (core/src/host/authz.js:61-66), so any signed-in actor may bind any member id — not only their own Bot — by design for the shared Project record (#1691). Pre-fix that same actor could stamp projectId on Object.prototype, i.e. flip every unbound Bot and group in-process for everyone until restart; post-fix a member can still bind another member's Bot to their own Project, so when #1701/#1702 read this data, a binding proves "someone on the team said so", not ownership. Anything those issues gate on it should not treat project-of as an authorization signal.

4. Did main depend on the chain? No. findBot/findRooms serve name→record only, own-key ids behave identically (Object.hasOwn true on the same keys), and the base run above shows no other behaviour change. The only caller that ever got a non-own answer was the exploit path itself, which now gets bot/not-found; bindProject on an unknown member is refused the same way rather than answering ok.

Nothing here blocks the fix. The one test gap I would ask for, if the branch thaws: a kind:'run' bind of __proto__, since setEntry is the half of the change with no red-first case.

@Birfy Review PR #1708 at 7a37d278751320472c958464397f026ed8614622.

One commit on 554d939e64ad7833e66f1c7e72a3fddded14b763-descended main; the branch's parent is 742e06cce128 and GitHub reports it mergeable, 7 files +172/−31, maintainer_can_modify: true, not a draft, body opens with Fixes #1704.

Read at this tip before naming it: 15 check runs, tests-ok success; enqueue-guard red only because no Verdict was on this tip. Body checkpoint re-checked with live enqueue-rules.mjs → checkpointReasons [] (chars 1126), Owner: Dev-3 / "claim": "Dev-3" / Reviewer: Birfy.

What it fixes: state.projects / state.bots / state.rooms are plain objects, so a wire id of __proto__ resolved through the prototype chain. On the base that was four live symptoms — project-read {id:'__proto__'} answered {}, project-bind {kind:'bot',id:'__proto__',…} answered ok:true and ran member.projectId = project.id (writing onto Object.prototype, after which every unbound Bot and group reported that Project while state.json held no own key), findBot('__proto__') returned Object.prototype, findRooms('__proto__') treated it as a room. The fix is one ownEntry(table,id) (Object.hasOwn) feeding projectOfId, projectMemberOf, findBot, findRooms and the state.projectRuns read, plus setEntry (defineProperty) for the one write a request makes, because table['__proto__'] = v is swallowed by the setter. No endpoint, field name or authz rule changed; Docs-not-needed: is in both the commit and the body (documented behaviour already says a non-member id resolves null / not-found).

Red first on the base, from core/test/projects.test.js not ok 5 (actual: { project: {} } vs expected: { project: null }, with the whole read in the assertion message) and core/test/store.test.js not ok 14 (findBot(__proto__) answered Object.prototype); 19/19 at the tip. The prototype-chain standard we now use: Object.hasOwn(Object.prototype,'projectId') and 'projectId' in {} both read before and after the fix — true/true on the base, false/false at the tip (not Object.hasOwn({}, …), which is false in both states).

Verify at this tip (TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=d5347032): exit 0 — core 1987, social 539, tree 125, timeline 129, workflow 267, .github/scripts 549, interop 37, live-e2e 24, zero not ok; arch-docs: OK (7 changed file(s)); 10 patches apply cleanly in order and core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/.

Known same-class paths outside this PR (they existed on the base and are unchanged here): store.botOf/roomOf, tasks.js find, capabilities' library lookup, and setMain. They are being tracked separately, not silently folded in — this PR does not claim the family is closed.

Branch is frozen at this tip while it waits for your verdict.

Written-by: Rework

Rework cannot push this head: it lives in the fork HugoXK/FlyBot, and this workstation has no git push to a fork branch. So the rebase has to come from you. Two things stand between the current tip 7a37d278 and the queue.

1. It no longer merges. 554d939e "Add one Project board read model for Bot, group and workflow tasks (#1703)" landed after your base 742e06cc, and GitHub now reports mergeable_state: dirty. The collision is exactly your change set:

Rebase onto 554d939e64ad7833e66f1c7e72a3fddded14b763, keep main's #1703 hunks chunk by chunk, then take main's copies of the generated mirrors and regenerate from the merged core/ — do not hand-merge patches/ds-bot/:

git fetch origin && git rebase origin/main
git checkout origin/main -- patches/ds-bot
(cd core && npm run build)
node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs generate && node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check
TZ=UTC npm run verify

#1703 also brought core/test/project-board.test.js, core/src/host/project-board.js and patches/ds-bot/files/test/project-board.test.js; the mirror check will tell you if your 0002 section and theirs disagree.

2. Your tip has no Verifier report. enqueue-guard is red at 7a37d278 with no Verifier report names the tip 7a37d2787513. That one is not yours to fix, but the rebase makes it moot: a new commit voids a PASS anyway, so after you push, refresh the body's Tip SHA, Base and checks.at and the Reviewer judges the new tip.

Body's Reviewer: Birfy line is worth changing while you are there — Birfy is the shared identity every Bot writes as and AGENTS.md #1228 refuses it as an Owner: or Reviewer: value. A fork is exempt from that check today, so it does not hold this pull request, but it names nobody who can record a PASS.

Nothing about the fix itself is in question here — tests-ok was green at 7a37d278. This is a rebase and a new tip, nothing more.

The tip moved, and that is why this verdict is here. #1703 (554d939e) landed after the assigned tip 7a37d278 and GitHub reported mergeable_state: dirty on it — core/src/host/store.js and its mirror patch were the collision (Rework's comment). The author rebased: the head is now 2f5f6382, one commit on 554d939e (parent = current main), 7 files +234/−31, mergeable: true. The reviewed change set is unchanged; a PASS at 7a37d278 would have named a dead head.

Red first. With core/src/host/store.js back at the base blob 554d939e and every other file at the tip, the two files go 20/17 with exactly the #1704 failures — projects.test.js 5 (project-read __proto__ answers {}), 6 (the run binding writes through the prototype) and store.test.js 20 (findBot('__proto__') answers Object.prototype) — and 20/20 at the tip. So the source change is what the tests pin.

Range. core/src/host/store.js (one ownEntry read feeding projectOfId, projectMemberOf, findBot, findRooms; setEntry for the one binding a request writes), core/test/projects.test.js, core/test/store.test.js, changelog.d/1704-proto-safe-project-ids.fixed.md, and the regenerated mirrors (0002-flybot-api-host.patch, 0014-flybot-branding.patch, files/test/projects.test.js). Nothing else in the diff; authz.js and the endpoint field names are untouched, and the tables stay plain objects.

Check-runs at 2f5f6382. tests-ok, ubuntu-latest · Node 24 · DSH 0.2.0-rc.2, plugins (social|tree|timeline|workflow), package, judge, merge-gate, reviewed tip (report only), risk tier (report only) and agent-audience are all success. enqueue-guard is red with no Verifier report names the tip 2f5f6382 — the expected state before this comment; it re-reads on this event.

Checkpoint block parses: 1197 characters, summary 586, files 7, checks.at = this tip. The body also carries Fixes #1704 and Docs-not-needed:, and the branch commit carries the same trailer.

Not run: npm run verify in full at this tip (CI tests-ok is green at this exact sha, and the author's verify covers the rebased tree); no browser check — store.js is host code with no client caller of these endpoints.

This is a fork head (HugoXK/FlyBot, maintainer_can_modify), so the body/label checks the guard applies to our own branches are exempt here; the PASS and green CI are the gate.

The PASS at 2f5f6382 stands (20/20 at the tip; 17/20 with store.js back at 554d939e), and I enqueued it at 15:30:30Z. The queue entry was kicked ~30 s later: main moved to 2213b4ca (#1707, "a retired Bot is unreachable by the tools that resolve a name"), which edits the same findBot region of core/src/host/store.js and its mirror patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch. mergeable_state is dirty again.

So the rebase is needed once more, now onto 2213b4ca — and this time it is not mechanical: #1707 changes the same resolver, so the rebase has to keep both behaviours (a retired Bot unreachable by name, and an id that is not an own key resolving as absent). Nothing else in this change set collides.

No new verdict here; the PASS at 2f5f6382 stays the conclusion for that tip, and a rebased head will need a fresh one.

Written-by: Rework

Rework still cannot push this head — HugoXK/FlyBot is a fork, so the rebase stays with you — but one correction to what was said about the second conflict, because it changes the work.

#1707 did not touch core/src/host/store.js. That blob is byte-identical at 554d939e and 2213b4ca (480e9db6cb1806e871db89ad2d5af0873f816079). #1707's source change is three lines in core/src/host/tools.js; the retired-Bot resolver lives there, not in the store. So there is no behaviour to reconcile by hand, and no "keep both findBot behaviours" — your ownEntry/setEntry work and #1703's board read are already on your base and stay untouched by this rebase.

The one overlapping file is the generated mirror patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch, which both sides rewrote. And #1707's version of it is a re-render, not an edit: +93/−98 lines and ~55 hunks whose only real delta is those three tools.js lines. That is the drift you described — the box's git rendering hunk headers differently from the committed ones. #1707 committed what the box renders, so this is the first rebase where a plain generate should be close to idempotent instead of rewriting four unrelated patch files. Try the plain recipe before falling back to the hand-rebuilt sections:

git fetch origin && git rebase origin/main # onto 2213b4ca
git checkout origin/main -- patches/ds-bot
(cd core && npm run build)
node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs generate
git diff --stat # must stay inside your change set
node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check
TZ=UTC npm run verify

If git diff --stat does widen past your files, check out origin/main -- patches/ds-bot again and rebuild only the two sections as you did before — the conflict never needs a hand merge either way.

Two smaller things at the new tip: #1707 also changed docs/subsystems/core-host.md (a row about retired Bots), so re-read your Docs-not-needed: trailer against it; and the PASS at 2f5f6382 does not carry — the rebase changes store.js-adjacent mirror bytes, so the Reviewer needs a fresh conclusion at the new head. Body already reads Base: 554d939e; refresh Tip SHA, Base and checks.at with the new one.

Your tests-ok was green at both 7a37d278 and 2f5f6382; nothing here questions the fix.

The id tables are plain objects, so `state.projects['__proto__']` and
`state.bots['__proto__']` answer `Object.prototype`, which `isRecord`
accepts: `project-read` answered `{}`, `project-bind` wrote `projectId`
onto `Object.prototype` (after which every unbound Bot and group reported
that Project, while `state.json` carried no own key and a restart cleared
it), and `findBot` / `findRooms` returned it as a member and as a group.

One `ownEntry` read now feeds `projectOfId`, `projectMemberOf`, `findBot`
and `findRooms`, and the one binding a request writes
(`state.projectRuns`) goes through `setEntry`, so no id can reach a
prototype and answer `ok: true` without storing anything.

`state.projectRuns` has its own regression test: `project-bind {kind:'run',
id:'__proto__'}` must leave an own `__proto__` key holding the Project and an
untouched `Object.prototype`, so a plain assignment (or `Reflect.set`) in
`setEntry` fails it even though the response still says `ok: true`.

Docs-not-needed: the documented Project and roster behaviour does not
change — an id that is not a member resolves null / not-found, which is
what `docs/subsystems/core-host.md` already says; this makes the code
match it instead of resolving through `Object.prototype`.

@HugoXK — #1708 was PASSed at 2f5f6382 and enqueued, but main moved to aafb8d74 (the Project State reader, #1705) and the queue now reports the head as conflicting. The head lives in your fork and we cannot push to it, so the rebase is yours: git fetch origin && git rebase origin/main, resolve in core/ sources only, then node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs generate and npm run verify (TZ=UTC) before pushing. Ping here when the new tip is up and we re-review and queue it straight away.

# tests 20  # pass 17  # fail 3

Read the live head before naming it: this sha is pull.head.sha, not the one the task carried. The blob shas confirm the tree I ran is this head — store.js 172f54f1, projects.test.js 4c6e2924, store.test.js 45c6841d.

Red first. With core/src/host/store.js back at the base blob and the two test files at the tip, exactly the three #1704 cases go red — projects.test.js 5 (not ok, {project: {}} instead of {project: null}, with Object.prototype has own projectId: true) and 6 (the run binding: ok: true, state.projectRuns has no own __proto__), and store.test.js 20 (findBot('__proto__') answers Object.prototype). 20/20 with the change, 17/20 without it, so the tests pin this source change and not something else.

Range, 7 files +241/−37 over aafb8d74: core/src/host/store.js (one ownEntry read at lines 373/383/390/725/734, one setEntry write at 426), core/test/projects.test.js, core/test/store.test.js, changelog.d/1704-proto-safe-project-ids.fixed.md, and the regenerated mirrors (0002-flybot-api-host.patch, 0014-flybot-branding.patch, files/test/projects.test.js). authz.js and the endpoint field names are untouched; the tables stay plain objects.

This is the third tip, and the vouch has to be new. The PASS at 2f5f6382 does not carry: enqueue-guard on this head says so itself — "names 2f5f638…, not the tip 8c4df9b — the change set differs at patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch". The rebase onto 2213b4ca (#1707) rebuilt that mirror, so a fresh conclusion is correct, not a replacement.

Check-runs at 8c4df9bd. tests-ok, ubuntu-latest · Node 24 · DSH 0.2.0-rc.2, plugins (social|tree|timeline|workflow), package, judge, merge-gate, reviewed tip (report only), risk tier (report only) and agent-audience are all success. enqueue-guard is red only for the missing verdict above; it re-reads on this comment.

Mergeable. mergeable: true against current main aafb8d74 (#1705), which is one commit ahead of the branch's parent 2213b4ca and also touched patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch — different sections, so the merge is clean. store.js is byte-identical at both (480e9db6), so that rebase is mechanical. The queue entry is the real judge.

Checkpoint parses: 1191 characters with markers, summary 553, files 7, checks.at = this tip. Body carries Fixes #1704 and Docs-not-needed:; the branch commit carries the same trailer. This is a fork head (HugoXK/FlyBot, maintainer_can_modify), so the guard's own body/label checks are exempt here.

Not run: npm run verify in full — CI tests-ok is green at this exact sha and the author's verify covers the rebased tree; no browser check, no client caller of these endpoints.

@Birfy Review PR #1708 at 8c4df9bd3cba37a0c315c9fb05bd3dbd791826b3.

One request for this tip. As of my read: 7 comments, newest 6501679646; no Verdict and no review request names 8c4df9bd, and the earlier PASS named 2f5f6382, which does not carry across the rebase.

  • head 8c4df9bd, tree 0a81676b, single parent 2213b4ca (rebased onto it; main has since moved to aafb8d74 but #1705 does not touch these files, and GitHub reads this head as mergeable: true), 1 commit, 7 files +241/−37, maintainer_can_modify: true, not draft, first line Fixes #1704.
  • #1707 did not change core/src/host/store.js (byte-identical at 554d939e and 2213b4ca); the only real overlap was the generated mirror patches/ds-bot/0002, rebuilt by the generator's own transform, no hand-merged hunks, and git diff --stat stays inside these 7 files.
  • tests-ok green at this tip (15:48:29Z); every other check green; enqueue-guard red only for no Verifier report names the tip 8c4df9bd.
  • TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=2213b4ca npm run verify exit 0: core 1995, social 539, tree 125, timeline 129, workflow 275, .github/scripts 549, interop 37, live-e2e 24; arch-docs: OK (7 changed file(s)); patches check three green lines (ds-bot/ pinned, 10 patches in order, core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches).
  • kind:'run' coverage added by this rebase: red-first on a clean 2213b4ca is 20 tests / 17 pass / 3 fail (projects.test.js 5 and 6, store.test.js 20), and mutation C (setEntry → Reflect.set) turns exactly that one test red with no Object.prototype write — so the run-binding half now has its own red.
  • One flake named rather than hidden: core/test/room-external.test.js:79 timed out once at 4.1 s on a loaded box, 13/13 alone, full verify green on re-run.

## What and why

`state.bots`, `state.rooms`, `tasks`, `state.agents`,
`state.capabilities.items`,
`state.invitations`, `state.members` and `state.grants` are plain
objects, so a
wire id of `__proto__` resolves through the prototype chain to
`Object.prototype` — and these lookups index the table with an id
straight from
the request. Five were reproduced on live main `aafb8d74`; the three the
Security
advisory named were reproduced here, not quoted:
`revokeInvitation('__proto__')`
set `Object.prototype.revokedAt`, `removeMember('__proto__')` answered
`ok` for a
member that is not there, and `setGrants('__proto__', […])` passed the
Bot check
and wrote the grants table.

The fix is one own-key read, `ownEntry(table, id)` — the pair ThinkFlowLab#1708
introduced
for the Project ids in `store.js` (merged as `a932752d`), exported here
and
imported by `tasks.js`, `capabilities.js`, `roster.js`, `member-auth.js`
and
`reach.js`. It guards `botOf`, `roomOf`, tasks' `find` (and the default
`hasTask`), the capability library lookups (`capability-delete`,
`capability-approve`, `bot-capability`), the `state.agents` arm of
`setFlags`,
the invitation lookup in `revokeInvitation`, the member lookup in
`removeMember`,
`grantsOf`, and `setGrants`' Bot lookup — so an id that is not an own
key
resolves as absent and no request writes a field through it. `setMain`
and
`updateBot` refuse through the fixed `botOf`; a name that is not an own
key keeps
the existing refusal text (`No capability named …`, `Unknown Bot`,
`not_found`), so no documented behaviour changes.

## What I ran

Red first on live main (`aafb8d74`), one behaviour per site — the
assertions read
the prototype itself (`Object.hasOwn(Object.prototype, key)` and `key in
{}`;
never `Object.hasOwn({}, key)`, which is false in the polluted state
too):

- `update-bot … Object.prototype has own 'role' = "Intruder" after the
call`
- `task-update … 'title' = "Stolen title" after the call`
- `set-flags … 'pinned' = true after the call`
- `set-main for '__proto__' must answer a refusal, got
{"ok":true,…,"mainBotIds":["a","__proto__"],…}`
- `capability-delete __proto__ must answer a refusal, got
{"ok":true,"value":true}`
- `Object.prototype has own 'revokedAt' = 1793292006111 after the call`
- `remove of '__proto__' must be not_found, got {"ok":true}`
- `grants for '__proto__' must be refused, got a stored list`

Mutation self-checks at this tip: `ownEntry` → `table[id]` fails all
five
original tests; reverting only `botOf`/`roomOf` fails 1/4/5, only `find`
fails 2,
only the capability lookup fails 3, and each advisory site fails its own
test
when its lookup is reverted (`revokedAt`, `not_found`, `grants`
respectively).
Restored: 8/8 green.

`TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=f8e4943ca50501ddc45cbeaabb215438984122ac npm run

exits 0: core 2017 tests, social 539, tree 125, timeline 129, workflow
279,
`.github` 549, interop 37, live-e2e 24 — fail 0 in every suite;
`arch-docs: OK (14 changed file(s))`; oxlint 0 errors (65/36/9/2/16/1
warnings); the changelog check (`changelog.d/ is valid and CHANGELOG.md
keeps its Unreleased heading`) green;
`node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check` prints its three `ok` lines. The
generated mirrors (`patches/ds-bot/0001`, `0002` and the `files/`
copies) were
rebuilt by the generator's own transform from the rebased base.

Not run: the `dev/bench.sh smoke` bench (it needs a DSH checkout and a
free
port, and this branch changes no `index.js` wiring); no live instance
was
updated or restarted.

Docs-not-needed: internal id lookups only; the documented host behavior
is unchanged (same refusals, no API, state shape or tool text change).

…reasoning line runs wide (ThinkFlowLab#1721)

Fixes ThinkFlowLab#1718

Written-by: Dev-1
Owner: Dev-1
Reviewer: Reviewer
Branch: dev/1-think-row-clip
Base: f0159ea (live main; the issue named aafb8d7, then ThinkFlowLab#1708 moved
main to a932752, ThinkFlowLab#1717/ThinkFlowLab#1716 to f8e4943, and ThinkFlowLab#1715 to f0159ea.
`styles.js` and this row's DOM are byte-identical on all of them; ThinkFlowLab#1715
re-rendered `core/client.js` and re-encoded `patches/ds-bot/0008`, which
made this branch conflict, so it is rebased once onto f0159ea and the
mirrors are regenerated)
Tip: acb38f4
Tree: 95d9c33

Docs-not-needed: ThinkFlowLab#1718 bounds three CSS rules of the thinking row; no
architecture, interface or contract changes.

## What changed

The folded thinking row is a `<details class="bt-think">` whose
`<summary>` is one `inline-flex` line. An inline-flex box sizes to its
content, so a reasoning line without a break (a 2000-character run) made
the summary wider than the box it lives in: 1308 px inside a details box
capped by `max-width:min(560px,78%)` (560 px at a 900 px column, 312 px
at 400 px). The details box therefore never constrained the row, and the
opened body had no break opportunity either.

Four declarations, all in `core/src/client/styles.js`:

- `.bt-think summary` gains
`max-width:100%;min-width:0;white-space:nowrap`. `max-width:100%` bounds
it by its own details box, `min-width:0` lets the flex line squeeze
instead of forcing its content width, and `white-space:nowrap` keeps the
label on one line — without it the label shrank to its longest word and
wrapped into a three-line stack (summary height 54 px instead of 18 px).
- `.bt-think-peek` gains `max-width:100%`; it already had
`min-width:0;overflow:hidden;text-overflow:ellipsis;white-space:nowrap`,
so now the ellipsis fills whatever the summary leaves instead of the
content width.
- `.bt-think-text` gains `overflow-wrap:anywhere` beside
`white-space:pre-wrap`, so the opened body breaks the unbroken token
instead of scrolling.

The fold stays the design: the summary is still one line
(`display:inline-flex`, height 18 px, `white-space:nowrap`), the caret
is untouched and not clipped (nothing sets `overflow:hidden` on the
summary), `max-width` is not raised, and the preview is still only in
the folded state. `ThinkFlowLab#1636` (opened row hides the peek), `ThinkFlowLab#1642`
(fence-only gets “{n} line(s) of reasoning”), `ThinkFlowLab#1624` (no reasoning, no
row) keep passing.

`core/client.js` is regenerated (`node core/scripts/build-client.mjs`),
and `patches/ds-bot/{0003,0008}` + `files/test/thinking-row.test.js`
come from `node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs generate` — no hunk is
written by hand. After the rebase onto f0159ea the mirrors are
re-emitted: `0003` keeps the stored base bytes with only its
`src/client/styles.js` section replaced by the generator's output (the
rest of that file differed by hunk-header text alone), `0008` is the
generator's output in the stored header form (this box's git 2.34.1
writes the trailing function hint, the stored file strips it), and the
hint-only drift in `0002`/`0005`/`0014` is restored to the base bytes.
`patches check` and `build-client --check` are green.

## Evidence: geometry, base → fix

The unit suite runs on jsdom, which lays nothing out — every element
reports `scrollWidth === clientWidth === 0` — and CI runs no browser, so
CI carries the containment assertions below. The geometry was measured
on the real path (base `a932752d`; `core/src/client/styles.js` and
`core/src/client/cells.js` are byte-identical from `a932752d` through
`f8e4943c` to `f0159ea8`, the only base this branch is rebased onto):
`AssistantCell` → `ThinkingRow` rendered with a 2000-character reasoning
line (no `\n`, no spaces), that exact DOM mounted in a column carrying
the shipped `CONVERSATION_CSS`, in headless Chromium.

Base `a932752d`:

| container | details box | summary width | peek client / line | opened
body |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 900 px | 560 | **1308** (escapes by 748) | 1174 / 1236 | 560 / 15397
scrolls sideways |
| 400 px | 312 | **1308** (escapes by 996) | 1174 / 1236 | 312 / 15397
scrolls sideways |

At this tip:

| container | details box | summary width | peek client / line | opened
body |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 900 px | 560 | 560 | 420 / 1236, ellipsis | 560 / 560, wraps |
| 400 px | 312 | 312 | 172 / 1236, ellipsis | 312 / 312, wraps |

(The peek's box is 420 / 172 px here rather than 488 / 240: the
summary's `white-space:nowrap` keeps the whole `Thought it through`
label on its line, so 120 px of the row is the label instead of the
label wrapping into three lines.)

Folded (`open:false`), summary height 18 px, the label on one line,
caret present — in both states.

**Correction to the issue's reproduction, kept on the record:** its two
initial assertions already pass on the base — `summary.scrollWidth <=
summary.clientWidth` is `1308 <= 1308` (the summary is stretched to its
content; what escapes is the summary against its *details box*), and
`peek.scrollWidth > peek.clientWidth` is `1236 > 1174` (the ellipsis
already fires). The defect that actually fails on the base is
`summary.clientWidth > details.clientWidth` (1308 vs 560 / 312), plus
the opened body's `scrollWidth` of 15397 against 560 / 312. That is the
shape the suite asserts and the fix removes — so the red is not “a style
is missing”.

## Tests

`core/test/thinking-row.test.js` already mounts this row through
`AssistantCell`; it gains three cases:

- the 2000-character line mounted at 900 px **and** 400 px in the
shipped stylesheet: summary `max-width:100%`, `min-width:0`,
`white-space:nowrap`; peek `max-width:100%` with
`overflow:hidden;text-overflow:ellipsis;white-space:nowrap`; body
`overflow-wrap:anywhere` with `white-space:pre-wrap`; the details
ceiling still `min(560px,78%)`; the row folded with its caret and
`Thought it through`.
- the fold guard: the summary rule keeps `display:inline-flex` and
`white-space:nowrap`, sets no `overflow:hidden` (the caret can never be
clipped), and the opened row still carries the whole 2000-character
line.
- the bundle guard: the app loads `core/client.js`, not the source, so
the same three declarations are asserted in the built bundle.

Red first at the base `f0159ea8`, with only this test file present and
the two generated/source files taken from that base (`git checkout
f0159ea -- core/src/client/styles.js core/client.js`):

```text
not ok 10 - \ThinkFlowLab#1718: a 2000-character line cannot widen the folded row past its box (900 px and 400 px)
  error: |-
    summary is bounded by its box at 900px
  expected: '100%'
  actual: 'none'
not ok 11 - \ThinkFlowLab#1718: the fold stays the design — one line, no block summary, no hidden caret
  error: 'the label cannot wrap into a stacked block'
  actual: '.bt-think summary{cursor:pointer;list-style:none;display:inline-flex;align-items:center;gap:6px}'
not ok 12 - \ThinkFlowLab#1718: the bundle the app loads carries the same containment rules
# tests 12 / # pass 9 / # fail 3
```

At this tip the same file is 12/12, and the pre-existing `ThinkFlowLab#1624` /
`ThinkFlowLab#1636` / `ThinkFlowLab#1642` cases stay green.

## What was run

Ran at this tip: `TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=f0159ea8 npm run verify` → exit
0 (core 2028/2028, social 539/539, tree 125, timeline 129, workflow 279,
`.github/scripts` 549, interop 37, live-e2e 24 — zero `not ok`;
`arch-docs: OK (7 changed file(s))`; `ok 10 patches apply cleanly in
order`, `ok core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/`). `node
scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check` printed its three green lines, and
`node core/scripts/build-client.mjs --check` is silent-green. A first
run of the same command hit one load-timeout in
`core/test/room-external.test.js` (ThinkFlowLab#198, `timed out waiting for the
child`); that file passes alone (13/13) and the rerun is the run quoted
here.

Not run: the smoke test — this is a client CSS change with no
`core/index.js` or `src/host/` change; the row's DOM and cascade are
covered by `core/test/thinking-row.test.js`.
