Summary

Fixes proofpoint_essentials_users_create always returning 400 "request data does not contain any valid data".

Linear: WYREAI-574 · HubSpot ticket: 338019781355 (WMTS)

Root cause

users.create() POSTed {"users":[...]} and domains.create() POSTed {"domains":[...]}. Proofpoint's official OpenAPI (postUser / postDomain on /orgs/{domain}/users|domains) takes a bare User/Domain object (→ 201) or a bare array (→ 207 batch). The wrapper key is ignored as unknown, so the API sees no valid data and returns 400.

Changes

  • users.create(orgDomain, user | user[]): sends the body bare (single object or array). Each item must have a non-empty primary_email. If an item is missing it, the call throws ValidationError before any request, and the message points out that email is not the Proofpoint field name.
  • domains.create(orgDomain, (string | DomainInput)[]) always sends a bare [{ "name": ... }] array.
  • Both return a normalized BatchItemResult[]:
    • 201 → [{ success: true, status: 201, ...created }]
    • 207 → an array is passed through, {results:[...]} is unwrapped, and any other body is wrapped. success is only inferred from an explicit 2xx status/code.
  • HttpClient.requestWithStatus() exposes the status code. request() behaves the same as before.
  • Types:
    • New ProofpointUserInput (primary_email required, plus firstname, surname, type, ...) and DomainInput.
    • ProofpointUser gains primary_email and surname. email and lastname are kept but @deprecated.
  • Tests: the msw mocks now reject wrapped bodies with 400, and the tests prove that. They cover the bare object/array wire shape, 201/207 normalization, and validation that sends no request. Fixtures use primary_email/surname.
  • The README users/domains examples and the 207 section are updated in this PR.

Compatibility

  • Type level: users.create now requires primary_email, and both methods return BatchItemResult[] (already a member of the old BatchResult union).
  • Runtime: callers sending {email} already failed against the real API, so those calls are now rejected locally with a clear message.
  • Commit type is fix: → patch release via semantic-release (not released by this PR).

Deploy interaction (conduit)

  • Live: proofpoint-essentials-mcp v1.0.0.
  • conduit main: vendor-fleet.conduit-prod.bicepparam already pins MCP v1.0.1 (fail-closed repin, merged, not rolled).
  • v1.0.1 contains the same SDK code, so rolling it does not fix this. (The ticket notes said that pin was in conduit#2242. #2242 does not touch this slug; the pin is already on conduit main.)
  • The fix reaches customers only after all of these happen:
    1. This PR merges and the SDK releases.
    2. proofpoint-essentials-mcp bumps the SDK, with the schema fix in a companion PR.
    3. That MCP is released, then pinned and rolled in conduit.
  • No release, pin or roll is done here.

Verification

  • Node 22.23.4: npm run lint && npm test && npm run build pass (65 tests).
  • Not run against a live Proofpoint tenant.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Create domains using domain names or domain objects, and create users individually or in batches with primary_email.
    • Creation results now include normalized per-item outcomes, including success and status information for standard and partial-success responses.
    • Added a request option that returns both HTTP status and response data.
    • Exported domain and user input types; user fields now include primary_email and surname.
  • Bug Fixes

    • User creation now excludes server-managed and update-only fields from requests.
  • Documentation

    • Updated guidance for domain and user creation, input validation, and batch response handling.

…e 201/207 (WYREAI-574)

users.create() wrapped the body as {"users":[...]} and domains.create()
as {"domains":[...]}. Proofpoint's OpenAPI (postUser/postDomain) takes a
bare object (201) or bare array (207), so the wrapped body was rejected.

- users.create accepts one user or an array, sends it bare, and requires
primary_email (email is not the Proofpoint field name)
- domains.create sends a bare [{name}] array
- both normalize 201/207 responses to BatchItemResult[]
- add ProofpointUserInput/DomainInput; deprecate email/lastname on ProofpointUser
- mocks reject wrapped bodies; README updated

📝 Walkthrough

User and domain creation now accepts updated input shapes, validates items before sending requests, and returns normalized batch results. The HTTP client exposes response status, and the public types, tests, fixtures, mocks, changelog, and README reflect the updated contracts.

Changes: User and Domain Batch Creation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Input contracts and status-aware requests
src/types/index.ts, src/index.ts, src/http.ts
New user and domain input types are exported. User fields include primary_email and surname; email is marked deprecated. HttpClient.requestWithStatus returns the status and parsed data.
Validated create and response normalization
src/resources/batch.ts, src/resources/domains.ts, src/resources/users.ts
Domain creation accepts strings or objects; user creation accepts one user or an array. Both methods validate inputs, send bare request bodies, and normalize responses into BatchItemResult[].
Create behavior validation and documentation
tests/create.test.ts, tests/domains.test.ts, tests/users.test.ts, tests/fixtures/users.ts, tests/mocks/handlers.ts, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Tests and mocks cover request shapes, validation, and response handling. Fixtures and documentation reflect the updated field names and describe 201 and 207 response normalization.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 36ac8

The previously identified user-create payload issue is addressed. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 36ac8

The change retains existing credentials and organization routing while changing the provisioning contract. No new authorization bypass was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns partial-result interpretation, recovery after interrupted requests, and compatibility with existing callers.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective provisioning scope is the organizations and operations authorized for the configured account, not a tenant boundary enforced by this SDK. Callers choose orgDomain and provisioning fields. The inspected changes do not introduce another credential source or authorization mechanism; the account's production authorization scope is unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Create calls retain the organization route constructed with encodeURIComponent and configured X-User and X-Password headers. HTTP 401 and 403 still produce typed authentication and forbidden errors. Successful HTTP 207 responses remain per-item data rather than an all-items-success assertion.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The create flow performs one POST without local retry, deduplication, reconciliation, or rollback. Partial results are returned for callers to inspect. These recovery omissions also existed in the base user POST flow; this review did not establish upstream behavior after acceptance followed by response loss.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before using inferred success to drive automated provisioning recovery, establish authoritative precedence for conflicting outcome fields and define reconciliation for an interrupted accepted request. Contradictory outcomes could conservatively remain indeterminate. This is a contract-hardening proposal, not a verified production failure.
