replace the embedded Pi SDK session with the normal pi --mode rpc CLI protocol
use Pi's native persisted session file as DevSpace continuation identity and keep model/thinking overrides provider-native
preserve restricted DevSpace modes by launching Pi with the existing sandbox tool extension and write-mode-specific built-in tool policy
keep the packaged Pi CLI as a fallback (bumped to a release that emits agent_settled) while allowing a PI_COMMAND override; availability checks the same executable the runtime launches
discard a Pi process that does not settle after a stop or timeout, and fail explicitly when resuming a pre-RPC agent whose stored session id is not a session file
add a small JSONL RPC transport and tests for response correlation, event framing, continuation, and agent_settled terminal semantics
Validation
live smoke through the built CLI with Pi 1.4.0: a read-only turn completes, agents stop cancels a running turn, and the next turn is not contaminated
Pi now runs through its standard command-line interface, retaining its native authentication, settings, extensions, skills, context files, and saved sessions.
Choose an alternate Pi executable with the PI_COMMAND setting or a provider command override.
In restricted access modes, Pi’s available tools are limited to the matching safe set. Full access keeps Pi’s tool configuration unchanged.
Provider environment settings are now passed to Pi’s managed process.
Bug Fixes
Pi availability checks now reflect whether its configured executable can be found.

Walkthrough
The Pi provider now launches the Pi CLI in RPC mode. Its runtime manages persisted sessions, model and effort overrides, prompt execution, and event handling through RPC. Provider configuration and documentation support Pi command overrides and describe write-mode restrictions.
Pi providers can set a command, which maps to PI_COMMAND. Availability checks use the resolved executable. The driver starts Pi in RPC mode and configures tools and a sandbox extension by write mode. The documentation describes the RPC process, environment, and write-mode behavior. The Pi package range changes to ^0.80.10.
RPC process transport src/local-agent-pi-rpc.ts, src/local-agent-pi-rpc.test.ts
PiRpcConnection spawns Pi, exchanges newline-delimited records, routes responses and events, and handles process failures and timeouts. Tests cover record parsing, response and event delivery, stderr diagnostics, and event clearing.
Session and prompt runtime src/local-agent-pi.ts, src/local-agent-pi.test.ts
PiRpcRuntime manages persisted sessions, model and effort overrides, prompt execution, events, cancellation, and cleanup. Tests cover RPC runs, process reuse, continuation, eviction, model selection, and cancellation.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 18cd1
Pi turns can occasionally return a stale or empty answer if the settlement check fires before the agent starts. A user's older pi binary on PATH, or one set through PI_COMMAND, can also make every turn hang until the timeout. Fix the settlement logic and enforce the minimum Pi version before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 9194f
The new execution boundary has meaningful failure-containment and session-isolation risks. Timed-out work is not explicitly stopped before reuse, and concurrent calls can share mutable session state. Restricted-mode compatibility of externally selected executables remains unverified.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The settlement timeout returns a retryable failure without aborting or invalidating the live process. The pool retains that runtime, allowing subsequent work before the previous turn is known to have stopped. This can leave tool execution or persisted-session mutation running after the caller considers the turn failed.
Medium · security · inferred: Concurrent calls sharing a runtime are not serialized across session selection, configuration, prompting, settlement, and response retrieval. Request IDs correlate individual RPC responses but not turn events or session ownership. Interleaving can bind a prompt, settlement event, or final response to the wrong invocation. The demonstrated scope is a shared provider-instance, agent, and write-mode key; actual production overlap remains unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Turn-isolation risks are bounded by the shared runtime key demonstrated in source, rather than proven cross-tenant access. Separately, selecting an executable grants it the supplied environment and host-process execution authority; the launch path does not independently sandbox the entire CLI process.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The canonical security assessment contains no retained verified findings. The external-executable authorization-bypass candidate remains deferred: repository evidence does not establish the selected external version's extension/tool-filtering behavior or an attacker-controlled configuration path. It is not a verified bypass.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Provider command configuration flows into PI_COMMAND and executable selection. Restricted execution relies on the chosen CLI honoring the injected extension and tool-policy arguments. The preserved sandbox integration and documented bundled filtering are counterevidence to a demonstrated regression, but they do not prove compatibility for arbitrary external executables.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Failure containment needs a terminal-state guarantee, not merely process liveness. Because timeout leaves the connection live and events are not turn-correlated, a retry can encounter unfinished execution or residual events from an earlier turn. Explicit close and idle eviction provide eventual cleanup, but do not establish isolation before immediate reuse.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Serialize the complete session-to-result transition per runtime. After timeout or unsuccessful cancellation, quarantine or terminate the runtime unless the provider confirms settlement; prevent residual events from completing a later invocation.
proposed — Define executable selection as trusted configuration and establish supported CLI compatibility for restricted modes. Where compatibility cannot be established, fail closed or use the known packaged implementation rather than assuming external restriction semantics.

The title "refactor(pi): use native RPC CLI runtime" matches the main change. The PR replaces the in-process Pi SDK session with the pi --mode rpc CLI protocol, which the raw summary confirms across the adapter, runtime, RPC connection, config, and docs files. The title is specific and concise. It does not mention the secondary changes (PI_COMMAND override, availability checks, dependency bump), but the task does not require full coverage.

A rabbit watched the Pi process start, RPC records hopped from a careful chart. Session files kept each turn in place, Model and effort joined the race. The sandbox shaped each restricted run, Then quieted down when work was done.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
[High risk] Switches Pi agent from embedded SDK to external RPC process.
Not safe to merge: existing conversations can be lost, answers can belong to the wrong turn, usable Pi installations can be rejected, and Pi can stop responding.
The move to native Pi RPC can resume an existing agent into an empty conversation, return an earlier turn’s answer after cancellation, reject a usable system-installed Pi, and stall when Pi writes enough diagnostics. An already-cancelled turn can also submit a prompt. The conversation, turn-isolation, availability, and process-output failures must be fixed before merging.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Existing Pi conversations resume empty
When an agent created before this change continues, its stored Pi session reference is an ID, not a file path. Passing that ID to switch_session opens a different, empty session; the manager then stores the new path, so the agent loses access to its existing conversation history. This must be fixed before merging.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in dc8be67: resuming a bare session id that isn't an existing session file now fails with 'Start a new agent' instead of silently opening an empty session. I did not add a lookup of Pi's on-disk layout; maintainer call if pre-RPC Pi agents need real resume.

- Around line 47-53: Update the RPC process handling around the

retain only a small bounded tail, preventing the pipe from filling. Include the
trimmed buffered stderr in the error passed to `fail()` when the child exits,
while preserving the existing exit-code message when no stderr was captured.
Review comments at @src/local-agent-pi.ts:
- Around line 192-194: Update waitForSettlement so that when the deadline
expires it sends an abort request through this.connection before throwing the
timeout error; if Pi does not settle within the abort request’s timeout, close
the connection. Preserve the existing timeout error behavior.
- Around line 173-175: Update resolveModel to check available models for an
exact ID match before interpreting the value with parsePiModelSlug. Return the
provider and ID for a unique exact match; only use the parsed provider/model
slug when there is no exact match, and preserve the existing error for ambiguous
or unresolved models.
- Around line 84-85: In the run flow before sending a prompt, drain stale events
from PiRpcConnection so waitForSettlement cannot mistake a prior turn’s event
for the current turn’s completion. Update waitForSettlement to wait for the
aborted turn’s agent_settled event before returning, leaving the reused runtime
idle for its next run.
- Around line 209-213: Update Pi CLI selection so the bundled package is v0.80.4
or newer by default, enforce that minimum for explicit PI_COMMAND values, and
make availability checks use the same resolved CLI as the resolver. Keep
waitForSettlement dependent on agent_settled; do not treat agent_end plus idle
state as proof that work is complete.

…rovider instance name
A profile named like its provider instance won target resolution on start but
was treated as a raw provider run on continue, dropping its instructions and
its disabled check. Resolve the profile first on continue too.
Also make the migrated local_agent_sessions.driver column NOT NULL so migrated
databases enforce the same invariant as fresh ones.

A cached probe could keep routing new runtimes to the previous protocol
generation after OpenCode was upgraded while the daemon stayed up. Runtime
creation already spawns a server, so one extra --version call is negligible.
Also report spawn failures other than ENOENT with their cause.

… message
OpenCode 2 records a turn that fails before any assistant output (for example
an expired provider login) as a failed idle message. The assistant-only listing
hid it and the run ended with a misleading protocol error. Read the failed idle
message and surface its error.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Abort the local OpenCode request before awaiting the provider's abort so a
stalled provider call cannot keep the turn pending. Do not submit a prompt to
Pi, Claude, Codex, or ACP once stop was requested during setup. Give ACP
providers a grace period to answer session/cancel before dropping the process.
A failed Codex interrupt no longer reports the turn as stopped.
The manager bounds how long stop waits (below the client deadline) and reports
a conflict instead of success when the turn kept running or finished normally.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Drain Pi's stderr and report its tail when the process dies, handle stdin
errors on the connection instead of letting EPIPE crash the daemon, and drop
events left over from an earlier turn. A stopped or timed-out turn aborts Pi
and discards a process that does not settle, and a stop requested before the
prompt never reaches Pi.
Resolving a model now prefers an exact model id over provider/model parsing,
and resuming a bare session id from before the RPC runtime fails explicitly
instead of silently opening an empty session.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Preflight only looked for the bundled package, rejecting a system pi that the
runtime would happily launch. Also update stale Pi docs for the RPC runtime.

Live smoke and replay QA for the top of the stack (refactor/pi-rpc @ d9fd25b), run from the built CLI (node dist/cli.js agents …) against a throwaway git repo, with a temp DEVSPACE_CONFIG_DIR and state dir (the real ~/.devspace was not touched). Prompt for the completion runs: "Read README.md and reply with exactly its contents. Do not modify anything."

turn started but failed: the account is out of usage quota (codex exec reports the same), so a turn could not be proven
opencode (2.1.4, runtime v2)
no usable model: the free tier is exhausted and the xAI login has an expired refresh token. DevSpace reaches the server and now reports the real provider error (invalid_grant) instead of a protocol error; a successful turn was not proven
Stop/cancel: for a running "write the numbers 1 to 3000" turn, agents stop returned status: stopped / PROVIDER_CANCELLED in about 1.4s for both Claude and Pi. A following agents continue on the same agent completed cleanly (pong) for both, so nothing from the cancelled turn leaked into the next one.
One finding that is not fixed here: with the maintainer's real ~/.pi/agent (the pi-foldable-tools extension installed), Pi exits at startup because that extension registers read/bash/edit/write/grep/find/ls, which conflict with the DevSpace sandbox extension that registers the same tools. The smoke above used an isolated PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR without that extension. The failure is now diagnosable (Pi's stderr is included in the error), but needs a design decision on how DevSpace's sandbox coexists with user extensions.
Replay QA (pnpm qa --checkout <this branch>): claude-edit-review, codex-edit-review, workspace-turns and worktree-open all PASS. The last card in workspace-turns renders blank in the full-page capture; it does the same on main (531d3f9), so it is the harness capture, not this stack.

A continued v2 turn that fails before output no longer returns the
previous turn's assistant message, and the version probe reads output
after stdio closes rather than on exit.

A stop that outlives the cancel grace period closes the runtime, which
must not end other agents' turns sharing the same workspace.

The local request now ends only once the native abort (v1) or interrupt
(v2) succeeds. A failed or stalled one keeps the turn running, so the
manager reports a stop conflict instead of a false stopped state.

DevSpace cannot bound what an arbitrary ACP agent writes, since it may
act without a permission request. Restricted write modes are refused
instead of being silently unenforced.
