Summary

  • reject caller-relative pathspecs that resolve above the repository root before invoking Git
  • preserve the existing structured pathspec_outside_repository warning instead of returning a generic Git command failure
  • cover staged, unstaged, and commit-range resolution from a subdirectory caller

Part of #21.

Validation

  • python3 -m pytest (196 passed)
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD
  • python3 setup.py --name --version

Remaining work

Issue #21 retains its broader comparison-mode and edge-case acceptance criteria; this PR is limited to explicit, non-widening handling of escaping relative pathspecs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Repository-scoped searches now reject relative paths that escape the repository, including when started from a subdirectory. These requests return a warning instead of being passed through for Git to resolve.
    • The protection also applies to paths using Windows-style separators and to staged, unstaged, and commit-range searches.

Walkthrough

The pathspec resolver now rejects relative pathspecs that escape the repository and reports a pathspec_outside_repository warning. Tests cover this behavior for staged, unstaged, and commit-range resolution from a subdirectory, including paths with Windows separators.
