This PR tries a new approach to dealing with resetting battery energy. In the past I had always favored not altering the data returned over modbus, but in the case of battery energy it might actually be more appropriate to present altered data.
Some batteries (LG, BYD) do not have lifetime energy counters. SolarEdge's cloud platform appears to simulate lifetime values by summing delta energy, so lost telemetry leaves the totals incomplete. This is not revenue grade metering and we don't want user to have to rely on cloud for this, although a comparison to the cloud values would be interesting.
Whit this PR battery energy sensors here will try to do the same: it adds each increase in the register to its own running total, so the total never goes down. A register that goes backwards is treated as a new reference point and adds nothing. This also works for batteries with true lifetime counters.
This replaces a previous approach where we would still treat the sensor as lifetime and give the user an option to allow resetting, but did not alter the values modbus returned. The delta values for energy counters hide the actual values read over modbus. Options for allow battery energy to reset and cycles to reset are made obsolete and have been removed. They're not being removed from the config entry yet though, so an easy downgrade is possible if this turns out to be a bad idea.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Changes
The option to enable or disable battery energy resets has been removed; battery rating adjustment remains available.
Battery reset cycles require at least 2 consecutive lower readings before accepting a reset. Existing settings below 2 are updated, with a notice showing the old and new values.
Bug Fixes
Battery import and export totals accumulate increases in readings and restore totals and reading baselines after a restart.
Missing, zero, and invalid readings are ignored. Lower readings do not reduce totals; once the configured threshold is reached, the baseline updates without adding energy.
Calculate differences between battery energy readings and preset that as the sensor value for battery charge or discharge energy. This will hide the actual values read over modbus, but in favor of trying to present something closer to lifetime energy that the hardware can't provide.
Battery import and export sensors now accumulate positive register deltas and restore the total and prior raw reading. The reset-permission option was removed. Reset-cycle settings require at least two polls, and migration updates older entries with lower values.

Summary
Shared battery energy accumulator custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/sensor.py, tests/test_sensor_energy_accumulators.py
Import and export sensors use shared delta accumulation. They ignore missing, zero, and all-ones readings; add increases; and preserve the accumulated total when readings decrease. They rebaseline after the configured number of consecutive lower readings. Restore data includes the prior raw reading. Tests cover accumulation, decreases, and restoration.
The reset-permission option was removed. The reset-cycle default and minimum are now two. The options form and hub enforce the minimum. Migration updates older entries when the reset-cycle value is below two and creates an issue with the old and new values. Tests cover migration and settings behavior.
Settings notifications and documentation custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/strings.json, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/translations/*.json, COMPARISON_WITH_CORE.md
Strings and translations remove the reset-permission setting and describe changes to reset-cycle settings. The comparison text reflects delta-aggregated battery energy and the rating adjustment option.
Battery import and export totals can be inflated permanently if a low reading, an invalid reading and another low reading occur in a row. The reset options are removed, so users cannot correct the total. Reset the lower-reading count when a reading is invalid before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to da477
The inspected changes affect battery-energy totals and local configuration without expanding device-control authority. Compatibility of persisted sensor state across upgrades and downgrades remains unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated outcome of manipulated battery-energy readings is altered accumulated import/export sensor data and its persisted state. The inspected flow does not promote that data into device-write authority. Effects through separately configured Home Assistant automations are outside the established evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Incoming telemetry remains the source of energy increments. Sentinel filtering and lower-reading confirmation constrain interpretation but do not authenticate readings. The threshold is bounded to at least two both in the options schema and when the hub loads configuration.

Clear the lower-reading count after an invalid poll.
If a lower reading is followed by None, zero, or the sentinel value, _process_data() returns without clearing _lower_polls. A later lower reading can then trigger a rebase even though the lower readings were not consecutive. If those readings are transient faults, the next normal reading adds most of the raw lifetime counter to the total. Clear _lower_polls on the invalid-reading path, and test a lower–invalid–lower sequence.

Home Assistant official documentation state_class total_increasing historical statistics restore sensor state
💡 Result:
Home Assistant’s official documentation separates **sensor-state restoration** from **historical statistics**:
- **`total_increasing`** is for a total that can reset to zero but otherwise only increases. A drop is interpreted as a new meter cycle; Home Assistant maintains the accumulated statistics sum across that reset. ([developers.home-assistant.io](https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/core/entity/sensor/?utm_source=openai))
- **Long-term statistics** are a separate historical record: sensors with `measurement`, `total`, or `total_increasing` can have statistics compiled and retained. For totals, the recorded `sum` tracks accumulated change; it is not simply the sensor’s current state. ([data.home-assistant.io](https://data.home-assistant.io/docs/statistics/?utm_source=openai))
- **Restoring the entity’s state after restart** is a separate integration behavior. The developer docs say to use `RestoreSensor` and `async_get_last_sensor_data` to retrieve the stored native value and unit. Setting `total_increasing` alone does not restore a sensor’s value. ([developers.home-assistant.io](https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/core/entity/sensor/?utm_source=openai))
So, if a sensor resets during normal operation, `total_increasing` can preserve the *statistics sum*. If its value is lost on Home Assistant restart, implement state restoration—or rely on the device/integration to provide the value again.

Restore the legacy battery total during startup.
For an existing battery entity with only numeric restore data, async_get_last_extra_data() returns no record. _process_data() then initializes the live total from the current register and discards the previous accumulated value. Home Assistant’s TOTAL_INCREASING statistics can preserve the historical sum, but they do not restore the displayed entity state. Load the legacy numeric state when extra data is absent.

Clear _lower_polls when a poll returns an invalid reading.
Line 2724 returns early for None, 0 and 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. That early return does not reset _lower_polls. A lower–invalid–lower sequence therefore counts as two lower polls in a row, and the reference point moves to the lower value. If both lower readings were glitches, the next normal reading adds most of the raw lifetime counter to the total. Reset _lower_polls on the invalid-reading path. Add a test for the lower–invalid–lower sequence.
