fix(reporting): sort project status by workflow order in reporting tables

Sort the status column by the project status workflow order (Proposed, In Planning, In Progress, Completed, On Hold, Blocked, Cancelled). status_id is a UUID, so ordering by it only grouped equal statuses together and left the groups in an arbitrary order.

Also order the JSON aggregate explicitly so the ORDER BY survives ARRAY_AGG and LIMIT/OFFSET pages stay stable, accept status_id/status as sort aliases, and drive the table sort indicator from the real sort state instead of defaultSortOrder, which highlighted every sortable column at once.

Reporting -> Projects now sends status_name as the status sort key; previously only the overview drawer table did, so sorting on that page had no effect.

Ascending Order (Start to Finish)
This order follows the natural lifecycle of a task from creation to completion.

  1. Proposed (Idea stage)
  2. In Planning (Preparation stage)
  3. In Progress (Active work)
  4. Completed (Finished successfully)
  5. On Hold (Paused temporarily)
  6. Blocked (Stuck due to dependencies)
  7. Cancelled (Terminated/Stopped)

perf(reporting): speed up reporting projects queries and 100-row tables

Reporting project tables were slow at 100 rows per page: the query called
plpgsql functions per task for the status counts, the page spent its time in
per-project correlated subqueries, and the browser rendered a Chart.js
instance plus a socket subscription per row.

Backend

  • getProjectsByTeam now accepts a typed options object and binds every filter
as a parameter (search, archived user, status/health/category/client/priority
lists including the _no* sentinels, project managers, team ids and
team-lead scoping) instead of interpolating SQL fragments, so the statement
text is stable per sort shape and is issued as a named prepared statement
(db.query now accepts a QueryConfig). The legacy positional signature is
    kept for compatibility.
  • Added getTeamLeadFilter() returning { isTeamLead, assignedProjectIds } so
team-lead scoping can be bound; a team lead with no assigned projects still
    gets no rows.
  • Added normalizeReportingProjectsSortField(): the sort field comes from the
request and is interpolated in ORDER BY, so it is now whitelisted (name,
    status_name/status_id/status, project_health, category_name, client,
team_name, priority_name; anything else falls back to the project name).
This also keeps the prepared-statement names bounded and collision-free.
  • Replaced the is_completed()/is_doing()/is_todo() plpgsql calls in the
projects query and both export queries with an equivalent join on
task_statuses + sys_task_status_categories; those calls ran two extra
lookups per task and dominated the query.
  • Migrated the overview, overview-export and projects-report controllers to
    structured filters.
  • Migration adds idx_tasks_project_reporting_cover
(tasks(project_id) INCLUDE (id, total_minutes, archived, status_id)) so the
per-project estimated/actual time and task aggregates are index-only scans.

Frontend

  • Estimated vs actual renders with CSS bars instead of a Chart.js canvas per
row, and cells plus their derived dropdown/select options are memoised, so a
100-row table no longer builds 100 charts.
  • Per-row socket subscriptions for dates and category moved to a single
table-level subscription: 100 rows and 10 rows both register 4 listeners.
  • Reporting projects table: the third click on a sortable header clears the
sort back to name/A-Z and resets to page 1, pageSize is controlled, and
project category changes arriving over the socket are applied to the list.
  • Added defaultValue to the translation calls touched above.
  • Added a 100-row/10-row render benchmark covering mount time, re-render time
    and live socket listeners.

Verification

  • getProjectsByTeam legacy vs new path: 29/29 cases byte-identical (page
10/50/100, offsets, all sort fields, search incl. HTML-escaped terms, every
filter plus the _no* variants, archived and team-lead scoping, both
controllers' semantics), and all 18 sort field/direction combinations are
unchanged after the whitelist; invalid fields now fall back instead of
    erroring.
  • Exports byte-identical for 4 teams.
  • Reporting query, 29 heavy teams, page 50, warm: avg 122ms -> 12ms (worst
791ms -> 76ms); the new index removes ~23-26% of buffer traffic on pages
    with large projects.
  • Export for a team containing a 5.7k-task project: 468ms -> 18ms.
  • Backend tsc clean; frontend reports no type errors in the touched files.

📝 Walkthrough

Reporting queries now accept structured project filters and normalize sorting. Reporting tables update sorting, category and date handling, and project-cell rendering. Other changes add assignment-failure translations, allowlisted service sorting, and parameterized task-status renaming.

Changes: Reporting projects

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared reporting query and task aggregation
worklenz-backend/src/controllers/reporting/reporting-controller-base.ts, worklenz-backend/src/config/db.ts, worklenz-backend/database/pg-migrations/*
The query base accepts structured filters, normalizes sort fields, and calculates task-status aggregates through status-category joins. The database wrapper accepts QueryConfig. A migration adds and drops a covering task index.
Reporting endpoint filters
worklenz-backend/src/controllers/reporting/overview/*, worklenz-backend/src/controllers/reporting/projects/reporting-projects-controller.ts
The controllers trim and escape search text and pass structured options to getProjectsByTeam. The projects controller parses list filters and separates no-category, no-client, and no-priority selections.
Overview projects table sorting and requests
worklenz-frontend/src/components/reporting/drawers/overview-team-info/projects-tab/reporting-overview-projects-table.tsx
The table handles category socket updates, uses controlled sort indicators, resets pagination after sorting, fetches category lookup data, and ignores stale project-fetch results.
Projects report table sorting and category updates
worklenz-frontend/src/pages/reporting/projects-reports/components/projects-reports-table/projects-reports-table.tsx, .../table-cells/project-category-cell/*, .../table-cells/project-dates-cell/*
The projects report table handles category socket events, controlled sorting, and page-size changes. The category cell synchronizes category state from props and marks update emissions. The date cell no longer handles socket response updates.
Project report cells and performance benchmark
worklenz-frontend/src/pages/reporting/projects-reports/components/projects-reports-table/table-cells/*, .../projects-reports-table-perf.test.tsx
Project report cells use memoization and updated rendering or translation fallbacks. Estimated-versus-actual time uses CSS bars instead of a Chart.js chart. A benchmark measures mounts and rerenders for 100-row and 10-row datasets.
Overview report cells
worklenz-frontend/src/components/reporting/table-cells/*
ProjectCell, ProjectClientCell, and ProjectTeamCell are wrapped with memo; their props and rendered content remain unchanged.

Project member translations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Member-view locale strings
worklenz-frontend/public/locales/{alb,de,es,fr,pl,pt,zh}/project-view-members.json
The locale files add task-assignment failure titles and messages.

Client-portal service sorting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Allowlisted service sorting
worklenz-backend/src/controllers/client-portal/client-portal-services-controller.ts
The service listing maps supported sort keys to fixed SQL columns, falls back to name for unsupported keys, and uses descending order only for a case-insensitive desc value.

Project template task statuses

Layer / File(s) Summary
Task-status rename validation and update
worklenz-backend/src/controllers/project-templates/pt-task-statuses-controller.ts
The rename handler excludes the current status from its same-template duplicate check. It uses parameterized SQL to update by status and template ID, then returns the updated row.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bf37a

Resolve the index-build risk before deployment. Category updates and several member-view messages also need correction; the status-rename response now reveals limited information from another team.

Remove the console benchmark output from the default test suite, or put it behind a flag.

This test logs timing tables on every CI run, and its assertions check almost nothing. It also mocks the Chart.js canvas, but the cell no longer uses Chart.js. Gate the logs behind an environment variable, or move the file to a bench suite.

Build the index with CONCURRENTLY so task writes are not blocked.

A plain CREATE INDEX holds a SHARE lock on tasks until the build finishes. That lock blocks every INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE on tasks. The header comment says tasks is one of the largest tables in the schema, so on production data the build can block task writes for a long time. Also, node-pg-migrate runs each migration in a transaction by default, and CONCURRENTLY cannot run inside a transaction. Call pgm.noTransaction() first.

If a concurrent build fails, it leaves an INVALID index. A later run with IF NOT EXISTS would then skip it. Drop any leftover index before the build, or check pg_index.indisvalid after it.

Use the Portuguese removal action.

“Removedor” is a noun commonly used for a product that removes something, not the “Remove” action. The confirmation title repeats the same wording. Use “Remover” for both labels. (dictionary.cambridge.org)

Name the failed assignment, not the task.

Both titles say that the task failed, but the handler displays them after an assignee-update failure. Use assignment-failure wording in each locale. (dictionary.cambridge.org)

Describe the people assigned to the task.

Backend tsc --noEmit and both reporting render benchmark tests pass. Please restore the unrelated translations noted below and resolve the merge conflicts before merging. Additional nonblocking observation: the new category handler reads project_id/category, while on-project-category-change.ts emits id/category_id/category_name/category_color. The old row handler already had that mismatch, so this is not a new regression, but the claimed live category-update fix remains ineffective.

[P2] Restore existing member-view translations. taskProgressColumn changed from 任务进度 (task progress) to 任务文档 (task document), and manageTimeOff later in this file changed from 管理休假 (manage leave) to 管理休闲 (manage leisure). These labels now describe different actions/columns for Chinese users. The reporting optimization only needs the new assignment-failure strings; please revert the unrelated translation edits, including the Portuguese removeButtonText change from Remover to Removedor.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle category responses in the overview projects table.

Removing this listener leaves the overview projects table without a category-response handler. That table keeps its own projectList, so a category response cannot update its project data or correct an optimistic cell value. Add a PROJECT_CATEGORY_CHANGE handler to the overview table, or move the subscription to a shared owner used by both tables.

Scope the rename to the caller’s team before returning the row.

teamOwnerOrAdminValidator checks the caller’s role but not the target status team. A caller can submit another team’s status ID and template ID. The base DO block returned no row, while the new RETURNING * response exposes that cross-team row’s team_id and sort_order, which are not caller-supplied and are not returned by the existing GET /pt-statuses/:id handler. The existing read already exposes limited cross-team status data, so this is a narrow incremental disclosure rather than a new full-record access bypass.

Add the caller’s team_id to both queries:

Rechecked 0a55de1. The Chinese/Portuguese translation corrections are now present, backend tsc --noEmit passes, and both reporting render benchmarks pass. Approval is still blocked: GitHub currently reports mergeable=CONFLICTING, and the CodeQL check fails with one high-severity Database query built from user-controlled sources alert at worklenz-backend/src/config/db.ts:26 (check run 115236580992). Please resolve the conflicts and either fix the reported data-flow paths or document/resolve a verified false positive before requesting another approval. I have not independently demonstrated exploitation of the CodeQL finding; this is a request to clear or substantiate that failing security gate.

Rechecked 501da08. The merge conflict is resolved and both reporting render benchmark tests pass locally. Approval remains blocked by the current failing CodeQL check: https://github.com/Worklenz/worklenz/runs/116311998497 reports one high-severity Database query built from user-controlled sources alert at worklenz-backend/src/config/db.ts:26 (16 source paths in its annotation). Please fix the data-flow paths or investigate and resolve a verified false positive before merging. I have not independently demonstrated exploitability; this review keeps the existing security-gate request in place, rather than claiming a reproduced injection.
