[Bug]: Issue with Building PLC4X Project - Looking for Kafka Integration JAR

What happened?

Hello,

I am a beginner with Maven and PLC4X, and I need help with building the PLC4X project and locating a specific JAR file.

I have downloaded the plc4x-0.12.0 folder and run mvn clean install from the command line. The build process completes without errors, but in the target folder, I only see files like failsafe-reports, maven-shared-archive-resources, .plxarc, and plc4x-parent-0.12.0-site, among others. I cannot find the expected JAR file, such as the plc4j-apache-kafka-0.12.0-uber-jar, which I am looking for.

I am unsure if I have used the correct pom.xml file. Should I be running the build in a different directory, or is there something missing in the configuration of the project?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

fist of all, we would need to know what you're building from. I would assume you downloaded the 0.12.0 release archive from our download page, right?

In that case if you simply run a "mvn install", you will not build much.
PLC4X initially was mainly Java based, but has evolved. Now we have multiple people working on various languages. As we didn't want to force everyone to allways build all languages, we introduced the"with-{languagename}" profiles.

So in your case, if you want to build the Java part of PLC4X, you need to run

mvn -P with-java install

Command in order to do so.

If you want to update the code that's generated, because you changed an mspec file, you will also need to enable the "update-generated-code" profile, or the code generation will not run.

I hope that's enough to get you started.

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

I understand that in order to build the Java part of PLC4X, I need to run the command mvn -P with-java install. I also noted that if I modify an mspec file and need to update the generated code, I should enable the update-generated-code profile, which would result in the command mvn -P with-java,update-generated-code install.

I'll try that and get back to you if I have any questions or encounter any issues.
