Fixes ENG-1161

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected how dictionary identifiers are read from compressed data, improving the handling of dictionary-based compression.
    • Updated compressed-data header formatting to include consistent padding and field ordering. This changes the public header layout, so integrations that rely on its exact byte structure may need to account for the updated format.

Walkthrough

The PR changes the public Header field layout by adding a padding byte and reordering fields. It also updates the dictionary ID test helper to read bytes 4–7.

Changes: Header format update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Header field layout
sqlite-compress/src/functions/header.rs
Header places header_len before codec and adds a padding field. Header::new initializes padding to zero.
Dictionary ID test helper
sqlite-compress/tests/dict_train.rs
header_dict_id reads the dictionary ID from bytes 4–7.

  • caido/sqlite-rs#30: Adds compressed_dict_id, which reads the dictionary ID from the compressed blob Header.
  • caido/sqlite-rs#14: Adds search_blob, which parses Header and uses header_len to locate the compressed payload.

This change alters the stored blob header format without any compatibility path. Compressed values already stored in SQLite would be returned still compressed instead of decoded, and some plain binary values would cause decompression errors on read. Add legacy-layout decoding and a format discriminator, or explicitly accept the break, before merging.

Preserve decoding of existing headers.

Existing blobs store the Zstd codec value 0 at byte 1. The new parser reads that byte as header_len, rejects the header, and decompress returns the compressed blob as plain data. This affects both raw and dictionary-compressed values already stored in SQLite. (github.com)

Support the previous layout when reading existing blobs, and use a distinct version for the new layout. Add a test that reads a blob written by the previous implementation.

Based on learnings: verify backward compatibility for persisted serialization formats.

Discriminate the new header from plain blobs.

The reordered fields make some previously plain blobs look framed. For example, X'010C00000000000000000000FF' now passes the header checks, so decompress attempts to decode FF as Zstandard and returns an error. The previous layout rejected this blob as plain data. This can break decoded-view reads for existing binary values. (github.com)

Add a format discriminator and validate it before treating the new layout as framed.
