Chapter 1's two framed speech reports carried ti in the matrix Slot 1: melu tha ... tho ti haolu, a friend reportedly says. The evidentiality pamphlet's own drill defines that placement as third-hand, "The third receives even that speech event through a report", and Morris's narrator heard the friend directly. The saying is the narrator's own witnessed claim; only the story inside the frame is secondhand, and the frame construction itself carries that.

Both frames now stand plain, tho haolu, matching the chapter's closing frame, which already reads melu tha ... tho haolu with no evidential. The four mid-narrative sites where Morris's "says our friend" interrupts a frameless retelling keep their ti on the content verb, which is the correct placement and always was. The derived English drops "reportedly" and "reports" for "says" at the two repaired units.

The chapter intro and the opening note both described the misplacement as design, the note by conflating the two levels: "known through the friend's report rather than witnessed by the narrator" is true of the story and false of the saying the particle actually marked. Both sentences now state the two levels separately.

The phonetic-neighbour baseline moves by the two removed ti attestations and is committed. Validators pass 0/0, the chapter parses clean, the chapter 1 source reconstruction remains exact, and the site builds.

The wider class, evidentials on speech and hearing matrices in chapters 2, 3, 5 and Gibran's On Work, follows in a separate PR stacked on this branch, since both touch the baseline.
