Summary

Phase 1 of the conversation store, per docs/design/conversation-store.md (PR #118).

  • Messages carry message_id (UUIDv7), seq, created_at_ms and parent_message_id.
  • Sessions carry optional user, client, client_version, repo_id (hash of the remote, never the URL), branch, model and provider.
  • Version 1 files still load. seq is assigned by position and no IDs are invented on load. The first append upgrades the file to version 2.
  • Compaction archives removed messages to archive/<session>.jsonl. The session is replaced only after the archive and the new snapshot are durable.
  • Rotation copies the live file instead of renaming it away. The old code could lose the session if it crashed between the rename and the rewrite.
  • Rotated copies are kept until the export cursor passes them, capped at 64 MiB per session. They no longer show up in /session list.
  • Writes fsync the file and its directory. A torn last line is ignored on load and removed before the next append.

Behavior notes

  • Every append now calls fsync. That adds latency to each message. Measure it before Phase 5 if it matters.
  • Nothing writes the export cursor until Phase 5, so rotated copies accumulate up to the cap until then.
  • Forked sessions share message IDs with their parent. fork.parent_session_id gives the link.
  • Session metadata is set when a session is created. A resumed session keeps the branch it started on.
  • code-commands::handle_slash_command still compacts in memory without archiving. No production caller in this workspace reaches it.

Known gap: mock parity harness

The harness test is still #[ignore]d. I fixed two problems: it reads the manifest from the repo root, and it accepts pretty-printed JSON. The read_file_roundtrip scenario still hangs during a CLI tool round-trip. The wrapper script is not restored. This PR therefore does not satisfy the "run mock parity" gate.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check: pass
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: pass
  • cargo test --workspace: pass
  • code-runtime: 363 tests, including new fixtures for v1 files, torn tails, archive failure, cursor behavior, metadata and repo-id hashing.
  • Three CLI fixtures moved from session version 3 to 2, since the loader now rejects versions newer than this build.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • New sessions retain details such as the selected model, provider, repository, and branch.
    • Session history records message identity and timing details, and forks preserve this information.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Compaction preserves removed messages and keeps existing history intact if saving changes fails.
    • Session files better handle incomplete final records and interrupted writes, helping older sessions remain accessible.
    • Successive streamed tool calls are retained instead of replacing earlier calls.

…persistence

Phase 1 of the conversation store (docs/design/conversation-store.md).

- Messages carry message_id (UUIDv7), seq, created_at_ms and parent_message_id.
- Sessions carry optional user, client, client_version, repo_id (hash of the
remote), branch, model and provider metadata.
- Version 1 files load unchanged; seq is assigned by position and no IDs are
invented on load. The first append upgrades the file to version 2.
- Compaction archives removed messages to archive/<session>.jsonl and only
replaces the session once the archive and the snapshot are durable.
- Rotation copies the live file instead of moving it, so a crash cannot lose
the session. Rotated copies are kept until the export cursor passes them,
capped at 64 MiB per session, and are no longer listed as sessions.
- Writes fsync the file and its directory. A torn last line is ignored on load
and removed before the next append.
- The parity harness reads the manifest from the repo root and accepts
pretty-printed JSON. It is still ignored: read_file_roundtrip hangs.

Walkthrough

Session format v2 adds message identity, sequence data, and metadata while retaining version 1 loading. Persistence adds compaction archives, export cursors, and sequence-aware log rotation. CLI session handling and streamed tool processing change. The mock parity harness is enabled and gains additional scenarios.

Changes: Session storage and CLI integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session format and compatibility
crates/code-runtime/Cargo.toml, crates/code-runtime/src/session.rs, crates/code-runtime/src/usage.rs, cli/tests/mock_parity_harness.rs, cli/tests/output_format_contract.rs
Session format v2 adds message IDs, sequence numbers, timestamps, parent links, and metadata. JSON and JSONL persistence handle the added fields, and loading retains support for version 1.
Persistence, archives, and rotation
crates/code-runtime/src/session.rs, crates/code-runtime/src/lib.rs, crates/code-runtime/src/session_control.rs
Persistence repairs incomplete tails, archives removed messages, and writes export cursors. Rotated logs use sequence watermarks and cursor-aware cleanup. Managed-session detection excludes rotated backups.
Compaction and CLI session flows
crates/code-runtime/src/compact.rs, crates/code-runtime/src/conversation.rs, crates/code-runtime/src/session.rs, cli/src/main.rs
Compaction results include removed messages. Compaction applies archive and save operations before replacing session state. New CLI sessions record client, version, model, optional provider, and available repository and branch metadata; clearing a session sets or retains metadata.
Streamed tool handling
cli/src/main.rs, tests/mock-gateway/src/lib.rs
The CLI emits a pending tool call when another streamed call starts. The mock gateway assigns indexes to multiple tool calls and can stream final assistant text after a tool result.
CLI parity scenarios and output parsing
cli/tests/mock_parity_harness.rs, mock_parity_scenarios.json, scripts/run_mock_parity_harness.sh
The enabled harness checks streaming requests and parses complete JSON values from stdout. The scenario manifest adds coverage for streamed text, file and bash tools, permission prompts, plugin tools, auto-compaction, and usage reporting. The script runs the harness test.

Resuming a session with a bare relative filename and running /compact or /clear can return an error after the file has already been replaced. Rotated backups appear in the session list, and resumed v1 sessions rewrite the whole file on every message. Streamed tool calls with interleaved arguments can be corrupted. Fix the relative-path handling and the other open items before merging, or explicitly accept them.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(runtime): message identity, session metadata and crash-safe persistence (phase 1)" matches the main change. The changeset adds message IDs, sequence numbers, and timestamps. It also adds session metadata fields and crash-safe persistence, such as archiving on compaction, copy-based rotation, and fsync. The title is specific. It is at 86 characters, which is slightly long, but it stays within a readable single sentence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template structure. It has a Summary section with the related design doc (PR #118), a Behavior notes section, a Known gap section, and a Verification section. It does not include the template's Type of Change checkboxes, the Testing checklist, the Checklist, or Additional Notes headings. It also does not mark the feature as a new feature. The description discloses that the mock parity gate is not satisfied. The PR objectives say the author later reported that the parity harness is green, but the description itself still describes the gate as unmet. This is a mismatch between the description and the later comments.

Resolution

Consider adding the template's Type of Change selection (New feature), the Testing and Checklist items, and an Additional Notes section. Update the Known gap section, because the PR comments report that mock parity is green in commit b5fb35f and the harness is un-ignored.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 37.84% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 37 functions across 10 files. (1 skipped: 1 too large.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- Rotated copies are kept at the newest 3 until an export cursor exists.
Rotation happens only after the file grows another threshold past the
newest copy, instead of on every save.
- The pending cap for un-uploaded copies is 16 MiB.
- Session, rotated and archive files are created 0600; the archive
  directory is 0700.
- Remote URLs have userinfo stripped before hashing, so tokens in a
remote never reach the repo id.

Exclude rotated backups in the CLI session listing.

The .rot- exclusion exists only in session_control.rs, which compiles only for tests. The CLI's list_managed_sessions calls its own extension-only is_managed_session_file, so rotated backups still appear in the session list.

Make apply_compaction idempotent across snapshot-save retries.

maybe_auto_compact keeps the full session and retries compaction when persistence fails. apply_compaction appends every removed message before saving the compacted snapshot. A save failure leaves the session unchanged, so the next retry appends the same messages again. The archive then contains duplicate records for the same messages. Ensure a retry does not append records already archived.

In-memory version stays at 1 after the upgrade, so every later push rewrites the whole file.

append_persisted_message takes &self. After it writes the v2 snapshot, self.version is still 1. The condition self.version < SESSION_VERSION is therefore true on every later push_message. Each message in a resumed v1 session triggers a full save_to_path: whole-file rewrite, sync_all, directory sync, and the rotation scan. The cost grows quadratically with session length. This also defeats the fast append path the PR describes.

Fix: set self.version = SESSION_VERSION in push_message after a successful persist.

sync_parent_dir fails for a bare relative session filename.

Path::new("session.jsonl").parent() returns Some(""), not None. fs::File::open("") then fails with ENOENT on Unix. write_atomic runs sync_parent_dir after fs::rename, so every save returns an error even though the file was already replaced.

Trigger: frontal-code --resume session.jsonl /compact or /clear --confirm, with session.jsonl in the current directory. resume_session keeps the relative path when session_path.exists(). Both commands call save_to_path with that bare filename and fail. The --resume SESSION.jsonl form is the documented usage in the help text. The existing tests use absolute paths, so they do not cover this.

list_rotated_logs has the same problem: fs::read_dir("") also fails for an empty parent. Normalize the parent in both places. A small shared helper works.

- push_output_block flushed nothing before a second tool call started, so a

- The mock gateway streams the final answer once a tool result is in the

Mock parity gate is now green. Commit b5fb35f:

  • Real bug: a streamed turn with two tool calls kept only the last one (push_output_block overwrote pending_tool). This affects real OpenAI-compatible providers, not just the mock. Fixed with a unit test.
  • Mock gateway: streamed tool round-trips now return the final answer, and multi-tool calls get distinct indexes.
  • Harness: un-ignored, accepts JSON after prompt text, expects /chat/completions. scripts/run_mock_parity_harness.sh is restored.

Gate: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace (121 suites, 0 failed), and scripts/run_mock_parity_harness.sh all pass.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the reported compaction result.

This assertion accepts auto_compaction: null. The scenario starts without a seeded session or threshold override, but the manifest says it verifies that compaction fires. The enabled report can therefore claim compaction parity without exercising it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Either exercise and assert a compaction event or correct the scenario description.

Review comment at @cli/tests/mock_parity_harness.rs around lines 696 - 701:
Update the auto_compaction assertion in the mock parity harness so the scenario
cannot pass with a null result: seed a session or set a threshold override to
trigger compaction, then assert a compaction event. Alternatively, correct the
scenario description so it does not claim to verify compaction firing.

Keep pending tool calls by block index.

If a second tool starts before the first tool’s arguments finish, this emits the first call with incomplete input. Later deltas for the first call are appended to the second call because Lines 9478–9481 ignore the index. The provider permits this event order. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Track pending calls by block index and emit each call on its matching stop.

Restrict tool results to the current turn.

If a new user prompt follows an earlier tool result, this guard finds the old result. For example, a new read_file_roundtrip returns text based on that result instead of calling read_file. The gateway selects the scenario from the latest prompt, but latest_tool_result searches the entire history. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Limit result lookup to the current user turn, including the lookup used by scenario_message.

The harness uses a Unix PATH and shell plugin scripts. Un-ignoring it made it
run on the Windows CI job, where the CLI could not reach the mock gateway.

Gating only the test left every helper unused on Windows, which fails clippy
with -D warnings in the Windows CI job.
