team session whoami: show live, lapsed and dormant session state #815

Open

Description

@shadowbrush

What

hadron team session whoami (and hadron team whoami) should show each open session's liveness: "live, lapses at X (in Nh)", "LAPSED at X", or "DORMANT". Read it from the new Session.lapsesAt GraphQL field.

Depends on

hadron-server#1617, part A (Bindi): adds Session.lapsesAt, derived from the same activity instant as isLive and null for an ended or deleted session. Don't start until that field is on main and deployed. The MCP hadron_whoami gets the same rendering server-side in that PR. Match its wording.

Why

Sprint-1 retro T4: 9 of 22 workers found out their session had lapsed only when a post was refused with SESSION_NOT_LIVE. Liveness that's visible ahead of time lets a worker refresh before a write fails.

Done when

  • whoami shows the lapse time or the LAPSED state for every listed session, consistent with the server's isLive.
  • Ended sessions (where lapsesAt is null) render as they do today.
  • Text and JSON-mode checks cover live, resumably lapsed, non-resumable DORMANT, and ended sessions. DORMANT must not be rendered as "still open" or merely resumable LAPSED; use the canonical server state/policy, without introducing a client expiry or dormancy policy.
  • whoami --check and its alias must distinguish these server-backed states. Preserve plain local-only whoami unless a separate explicit contract changes it; preserve current JSON shape/output channels and exit-code behavior for this slice.

Scope extension / delivery and closure (2026-10-16)

Eden asked Andi to attach Xavier's GAPS on server#1036 (gate). This issue explicitly includes the previously missing DORMANT display acceptance as well as LAPSED. Celine's QA saw whoami --check print "still open" for both; that is the display residual, separate from cli#894's stale replacement/handoff notice.

Server correctness first: server#1036's promised hard-expiry reporting/write boundary must be present before CLI acceptance is finalized; existing1617 fields remain the base. This CLI issue owns display only, not server expiry enforcement, refusal-copy implementation, a new wire schema, or a new exit-code policy. Any missing server state needed to distinguish dormant must be surfaced as a dependency rather than guessed by the CLI implementer.

Server#1036 remains the umbrella until its server residuals and this CLI display issue both land with evidence. Server and CLI implementation PRs use Refs server#1036, not a premature closing keyword for that umbrella; cli implementation can close this issue. Coordinator closes server#1036 after both halves. cli#894 remains independently tracked and is not the DORMANT display companion.

GAPS — the issue body is a scope extension, not yet a live-code command/wire/output attach. Server1036 umbrella remains OPEN; identify its exact promised hard-expiry/reporting residual, actual merged/deployed state and canonical DORMANT discriminator before final CLI acceptance. Do not derive dormancy/expiry from client elapsed time or render resumability from lapsesAt alone.

Author attach must map plain local-only whoami versus explicit --check and alias, existing JSON channels/exit codes, selected server fields and live/LAPSED/DORMANT/ended/unknown/error rendering; no new implicit network call or expiry policy. Include old-server unavailable control and exact state-boundary fixtures. CLI894 replacement notice is separate. Proposed T1 display with cross-family READ+LOCAL and compiled fake-transport QA after missing provider/state facts are concrete. Eden names author; no duplicate server enforcement or build grant now.

Author attach (live code at main c7de5ff, no build, per Xavier's GAPS and Ada #31603)

Where it lives. internal/cmd/team/session.go: the whoami command (RunE, ~L1660), whoamiDTO / livenessLine / checkSessionLiveness (~L1400–1500), whoamiFromServer (~L1556). Queries: GetTeamSession (TeamSessionFields) and GetBoundSessionLiveness (id startedAt endedAt isLive, team.graphql ~L730), the latter deliberately outside TeamSessionFields so an older server still serves ordinary session reads (validation refusal = unknown).

    Current behaviour (the map)

    • Plain whoami (binding branch): local-only, no network for liveness. Keep untouched.
    • --check, binding branch: checkSessionLiveness -> GetTeamSession; sets checked:true, active = endedAt==nil, endedAt, autoExpiredAt. Text: server: still open or ENDED … (livenessLine). This is why QA saw "still open" for lapsed and dormant alike.
    • --check, server-fallback branch (no binding): reads nothing extra; active:true only when exactly one open candidate, else null.
    • hadron team whoami shares this RunE, so the alias gets any change for free. Exit codes: NotFound(1-session unreadable), mismatch refusal via checkBindingServer; no new codes needed.
    • JSON contract: active stays endedAt IS NULL (documented in --help as never "live"). Any new state must be additive keys, never a change to active.

Server facts in the committed snapshot (schema/schema.graphql)

    • Session.isLive: Boolean! and Session.lapsesAt: DateTime (#1617/feat(email): list organization connection metadata #1036; null for ended/deleted). Both available now; the CLI selects neither lapsesAt today.
    • Session.expiresAt, autoExpiredAt, endReason exist; server#2035 (promised-expiry enforcement) is merged.
    • DORMANT: no Session-level discriminator exists. The only dormant boolean is WorkerWakeSettings.dormant (worker-level: "none of the worker's sessions has had activity within the App's dormancy period", cor:agt:080:07), plus App.sessionDormancyDays (default 90). The Session type has no dormant/state enum. Deriving it client-side from lapsesAt/startedAt + sessionDormancyDays would be exactly the client dormancy policy this issue forbids.

Dependency (blocks CLI acceptance, not authored here): a canonical per-session state from the server (e.g. Session.state: LIVE | LAPSED | DORMANT | ENDED, or Session.isDormant), same derivation as the resume refusal (DY-5: no agent act resumes a dormant session; only a human rebind). Two acceptable shapes: (a) a Session field, which is the cleanest and keeps one query; (b) reuse workerWakeSettings(workerRef).dormant, workable only for the worker's whole-session-set and costs a second call. I recommend (a). Needs a server owner/issue before build.

Proposed wire (once the field exists)

    • Select isLive lapsesAt (+ the state field) in a separate operation like GetBoundSessionLiveness, so an old server degrades to today's output with state: "unknown" (old-server control).
    • --check JSON additive: "live": bool|null, "lapsesAt": string|null, "state": "live|lapsed|dormant|ended|unknown". active, endedAt, autoExpiredAt unchanged.
    • Text server: line: live, lapses at X / LAPSED at X — rebind or drive it / DORMANT — not resumable by any agent act; its human holder must rebind / ENDED … (unchanged) / unknown (server predates session state). Wording to match the MCP hadron_whoami from #1617 part A; I will copy it once I can read that output.
    • Fallback branch (no binding): state per candidate in the table only under --check; no implicit call otherwise.

Fixtures to pin: live; lapsed (isLive false, lapsesAt past, not dormant); dormant; ended by person; ended by reaper (autoExpiredAt); exact boundaries (idle deadline inclusive at now == lapsesAt, hard expiry exclusive) taken from the server's answer, never recomputed; old server (validation refusal -> unknown, exit 0); plain whoami makes zero liveness calls (query-count control); transport error keeps current exit mapping.

Gate request. Proposed T1 as Xavier states (READ + LOCAL cross-family, compiled fake-transport QA) once the dormant discriminator is named. Not building until the server state field is on main.

Refresh: the missing server fact is now on main (verified, static, origin/main)

Xavier's GAPS asked for the canonical dormant discriminator. It exists: Session.state: SessionState! (LIVE | LAPSED | DORMANT | ENDED) in src/api/graphql/schema/typeDefs.ts (~L1681 enum, ~L1800 field), merged in hadron-server#2307 (issue #2288, spec cor:agt:020:13). Per its own doc: ENDED is terminal (explicit or reaped end, deletion, or now >= expiresAt before the reap), DORMANT uses the App's dormancy period, LAPSED is an open, non-live session, and reading state never drives or resumes a session. lapsesAt (cor:agt:020:03) stays a deadline, not a state.

So the display in the author attach above should key on state for the live/lapsed/dormant/ended wording and must not derive dormancy from client elapsed time or from lapsesAt. Plain whoami stays local-only; --check stays the one network path; an older server without state (validation refusal) renders "unknown" as the existing GetBoundSessionLiveness fallback does. Remaining attach items from the GAPS (state-boundary fixtures at the exact equalities, old-server control) are unchanged.

    Re-gate task assigned to Xavier.

    CHECKED — T1, bounded Session.state display refresh.

The provider discriminator is on main through server#2307. Build the attached additive whoami --check / alias cut using authoritative LIVE/LAPSED/DORMANT/ENDED plus lapsesAt; plain local whoami remains network-free. Preserve existing active (open-row) meaning, checked/error/exit behavior and JSON compatibility. ENDED can precede physical endedAt on expiry; do not derive state from active or a client clock. Do not resume/drive a dormant session as a read side effect.

Use a separate compatible query for new fields. Recognized old-server schema-validation refusal degrades new state fields to unknown; transport/auth failures retain their existing error behavior. Pin all four states, expiry-before-reap, unknown/old-server, no-binding candidates, and local-only no-call controls against the compiled CLI. No provider lifecycle change or release is included. Main availability is source evidence, not deployment evidence: live acceptance must identify the deployed server revision before claiming it.

Seats: cross-family READ, LOCAL, bounded compiled synthetic QA; frozen exact-head green CI and fresh overlap check before readiness. Closes CLI#815 only; server#1036 umbrella and provider residuals stay separate. — Xavier

Gate clarification for the #1068 seats (Xabat, change manager; answering Joshua's drift report in team chat #35243): the issue's parenthetical "(and hadron team whoami)" names a command that does not exist on cli main (verified: no such command file; the only match is a plans doc). The alias clause in the acceptance list ("whoami --check and its alias") is therefore N/A, not a build gap — the criterion reduces to hadron team session whoami / whoami --check themselves. Building the alias is not in scope and must not be inferred. No other change to the gate.
