Screenshot, annotation and screen-recording tool for macOS and Windows. Website: glimpr.howar31.com

Glimpr image editor

Features

  • Screenshot: interactive region, window, and display screenshots on a frozen, pixel-faithful overlay; window snap and element snap (accessibility-based); multi-display support; HDR-aware screenshots (HEIC / JPEG XR) alongside SDR.
  • Annotate: 12 tools (rectangle, ellipse, line, arrow, pen, highlighter, text, numbered steps, blur, pixelate, spotlight, crop) in the capture overlay and a standalone image editor, with a pixel loupe and eyedropper.
  • Record: screen recording (H.264 / HEVC including HDR10, GIF) in region, window, display, and last-region modes; system audio and microphone; pause / resume; auto-stop.
  • GIF editing: open any GIF in the image editor to edit it frame by frame and re-encode it smaller; see GIF editing below.
  • Pin: float any screenshot as an always-on-top pin with drag and zoom.
  • Flows: configurable after-capture and after-edit actions: save, copy, open editor, pin, share; filename templates and date subfolders.
  • Excluded applications: keep chosen applications out of what you capture. On macOS their windows are left out of screenshots and recordings, with a per-application scope; on Windows their windows are blacked out or blurred in screenshots. Glimpr's own windows can be excluded as well.
  • Rebindable global hotkeys (including PrintScreen and bare keys), light and dark themes, English and Traditional Chinese.
  • Private by design: no telemetry, no account; captures never leave your machine. The only network request is the update check, and it can be turned off.

GIF editing

Glimpr GIF editing

Open any GIF, or a GIF recording you just finished, in the image editor, which switches to a frame timeline for it:

  • Timeline: select, delete, trim everything before or after a selection, reorder, reverse, yoyo; remove duplicate frames; reduce frame rate; frame clipboard; full undo / redo.
  • Timing: set, adjust or scale frame delays; insert a title frame.
  • Canvas: crop, resize, flip, rotate, border.
  • Annotate: burn the image editor's tools (shapes, text, blur, pixelate, spotlight and more) into a frame range.
  • Motion: fade and slide transitions, one-click smooth loop, cinemagraph and a progress bar.
  • Export: adaptive palette with optional dithering, file-size optimization (frame diff) and loop control, re-encoded by Glimpr's own encoder.

Get there by opening or dropping any .gif on the image editor (tray menu or ⌘⌥9 / Ctrl+Alt+Win+9), from a GIF in the editor's recent files, or straight from a finished recording via the after-recording flow action (Settings > Recording).

Install

macOS 14+ (screen recording requires macOS 15+): download the DMG from Releases and drag Glimpr to Applications. Grant Screen Recording (and optionally Accessibility for element snap) on first run.

Windows 10 (1903+) / 11: download the installer or the portable zip from Releases. SmartScreen may warn about the unsigned installer: choose "More info", then "Run anyway". The installer installs for the current account by default and needs no administrator rights; choose "all accounts" at install time, or switch later in Settings > Advanced. On managed machines, run the installer from a command line with /ALLUSERS or /CURRENTUSER (quit Glimpr first).

Installed builds update themselves: when a new release is out, updating is one click from the tray menu or the About pane. A per-account install updates without an elevation prompt.

Build from source

Requires Flutter 3.44 / Dart 3.12.

flutter pub get
flutter build macos --release # macOS (Xcode 26)
flutter build windows --release # Windows (VS 2022 C++ toolchain)

The public repo builds the complete free tier. packages/glimpr_pro is a no-op stub package by design; see CONTRIBUTING.

Support

Bug reports and feature requests go to GitHub Issues. In the app, Settings > About > Report an issue opens the form with the environment details filled in.
