feat(idris-dependents): read-only audit for external Idris2 dependents - #628
A new standalone crate, idris-dependents/. It is a read-only audit that finds people outside our accounts whose Idris2 projects depend on our packages (proven*, ochrance, …), using GitHub code search.
It ports a Bun/JS script to Rust. It lives at the top level next to robot-repo-automaton/ and dashboard/, not under bots/: it has no BotId and does not route through shared-context (invariant 6).
Why the rewrite matters (bugs in the original)
The JS suite passed 17/17, but probes found five cases where dependents were silently missed:
Input
JS result
Now
P1
.ipkg with CRLF line endings
[] (every dep lost)
✅
P2
ochrance == 0.1.0, on a continuation line
that dep and all later ones dropped
✅
P3
{- inside a -- comment
real lines swallowed
✅
P5/P6
pack.toml url containing #, or single-quoted
missed
✅ (real TOML parser)
The .ipkg reader now follows Idris2's own package lexer, read from Parser/Lexer/Package.idr and Common.idr on Idris2 main, instead of a regex chain. That covers nested block comments that skip strings, -- inside a block hiding a -} on the same line, and == as one token.
Safety
GET-only by construction:scan::Io has a single network method, get.
Queries GitHub truncates (over 1000 results) or marks incomplete are listed in the report; the JS dropped them silently.
An HTTP 401/404 fails loudly; only 429 and rate-limited 403s are retried.
Tests
rules_tests.rs: all 17 original cases ported, plus regressions P1–P6 and Idris-grammar cases (31 tests).
scan_tests.rs: mocked end-to-end scan (self-filter, dedup, rate-limit retry, a CRLF + == dependent), plus truncation reporting and hard-failure checks.
roundtrip_props.rs: proptest round-trip over 2,000 generated well-formed .ipkg files (CRLF, nested comments, bounds, both comma styles), plus a property that the lexer never panics on arbitrary input. Generator power check: the original JS parser is wrong on 404/500 of these files.
oracle.rs: differential test against idris2 --dump-ipkg-json. It is opt-in via IDRIS2=… and skipped in CI because Idris2 0.7.0 lacks the flag. Result: Idris2 0.8.0-d87ae51c3 (main) agrees on all 1,003 cases (3 real fixtures + 1,000 generated files).
Local run of the CI gates: cargo build --locked --all-targets ✅ · cargo test --locked 38 passed ✅ · cargo audit 0 vulnerabilities in 179 deps ✅ · cargo clippy -D warnings ✅ · cargo fmt --check ✅
Wiring
.github/workflows/rust.yml: adds idris-dependents to the build/test/clippy/fmt matrix.
Justfile: just audit-idris-dependents [OUT] [ARGS].
Not done here
Live run: not done. This session's token cannot call cross-repository code search. Run GITHUB_TOKEN=$(gh auth token) just audit-idris-dependents locally; the evidence can then go to audits/idris-dependents-<date>/.
Estate note:hyperpolymath/ochrance and hyperpolymath/ochrance-framework both declare package ochrance at version 0.1.0 with different contents. The fixture matches ochrance-framework.
Added a command-line tool to scan GitHub for external Idris2 dependents, with confidence levels and reporting of incomplete searches.
Added commands to parse local Idris2 package files and print their contents as JSON. Scans support authenticated GitHub access and optional JSON output.
Added a Just command to run the dependent scan and save its JSON report to a chosen path.
Documentation
Added usage guidance covering scan options, offline parsing, result classifications, and GitHub search limitations.
Port of a Bun script that searches GitHub code search for other people's
Idris2 projects depending on our packages, rewritten as a standalone Rust
crate (not a bots/ slot: it has no BotId, per invariant 6).
The .ipkg reader now follows Idris2's own package lexer instead of a
regex chain, which fixes dependencies the script silently dropped:
- CRLF files lost every dependency
- an `==` bound on a continuation line ended the field early
- `{-` inside a `--` comment swallowed real lines
- pack.toml urls with `#` or single quotes were missed (now a real TOML parser)
Requests are GET-only by construction (the Io trait has only `get`), and
queries GitHub truncates at 1000 results are reported, not dropped.
Tests: the original suite ported, regressions for each bug, a 2000-case
proptest round-trip (the old parser fails 404 of 500 generated files),
and an opt-in differential test against `idris2 --dump-ipkg-json`.
Added to the rust.yml build/test/clippy/fmt matrix and a Justfile recipe.

`idris2 --dump-ipkg-json` checks that each listed module exists and may
print deprecation warnings before the JSON. Give every case its own
directory with stub modules under its sourcedir, and read the JSON line
rather than all of stdout.
Result with Idris2 0.8.0-d87ae51c3 (main): idris2 agrees on all 1003
cases (3 real fixtures + 1000 generated files).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01J4QvDfb1gn2SD218jMg9jk
Oracle result: Idris2 itself agrees with the new .ipkg reader.
IDRIS2=… ORACLE_CASES=1000 cargo test --test oracle against Idris2 0.8.0-d87ae51c3 (built from main; 0.7.0 has no --dump-ipkg-json):
idris2 agrees on all 1003 cases
test result: ok. 1 passed; 0 failed — finished in 604.46s
1003 = the 3 real .ipkg fixtures + 1,000 generated files with CRLF/LF mixes, nested {- -} comments containing strings and -- lines, ==/>=/</&& bounds, and both comma styles. The original JS parser gets 404/500 of these generator outputs wrong, so the agreement is meaningful rather than vacuous.
To make the oracle runnable (commit 2), the harness gives each case stub module files, because --dump-ipkg-json checks that modules exist, and it reads only the JSON line, because a deprecated version = "0.1.0" string prints a warning first. No parser changes were needed.
The oracle stays opt-in. Building Idris2 main needs Chez Scheme ≥ 10 (Ubuntu 24.04 ships 9.5.8) and took ~25 min here, which is too heavy for every PR. A scheduled job or a cached Idris2 container would be the way to run it in CI; that's left as a follow-up rather than added to this PR.

Contain expected missing-file responses without hiding scan failures.
A raw fetch for either a catalogue .ipkg hit or a matched file uses ?, so a 404, 410, or 451 can abort scan::run before it returns a report. The CLI prints the report and writes JSON only after scan::run succeeds.
Handle expected per-file missing or inaccessible responses in both raw-fetch paths. Log and record skipped URLs, then continue. Add the skipped URLs to Report and the CLI output. Do not catch authentication failures, persistent rate-limit failures, search-response failures, or other errors that must abort the scan.

Parse .gitmodules keys case-insensitively
Git config variable names are case-insensitive, so Git accepts a valid entry such as URL = https://github.com/hyperpolymath/proven.git, but this exact lowercase strip_prefix silently rejects it. Repositories using uppercase or mixed-case spellings therefore lose otherwise valid submodule evidence and may be omitted from the dependent report.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Resolve relative submodule URLs before owner matching
A valid .gitmodules URL may be relative to the superproject's origin, as documented by Git, but requiring the literal github.com means a dependency such as ../../hyperpolymath/proven.git is discarded. For an external repository whose origin is https://github.com/alice/app.git, Git resolves that URL to https://github.com/hyperpolymath/proven.git; the search query still finds the owner text, but this matcher silently omits the resulting high-confidence dependent.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Stop lexing at an unterminated string
When a malformed .ipkg contains an unterminated string, advancing only past the opening quote causes the entire supposed string body to be tokenized as package syntax. For example, brief = "depends = proven is reported as a real dependency, even though the module documentation says an unterminated string runs to end of input; because the audit intentionally processes imperfect files, this can create false dependent reports instead of merely tolerating the malformed field.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Require GitHub to be the URL host
Treating / as a valid character immediately before github.com does not establish that GitHub is the host. For example, https://example.com/mirrors/github.com/hyperpolymath/proven passes this test and is promoted to HIGH confidence even though it points at example.com; any pack or submodule mirror URL containing a GitHub path can therefore create a false dependent report.
Include a bounded excerpt of the response body in the HTTP error.
into_body discards the body on non-2xx responses. GitHub returns the real cause in the body, for example "Bad credentials" for a 401 or a secondary rate-limit message for a 403. The operator sees only HTTP 401 for <url>. Append a truncated body excerpt to the error. Existing tests use contains("HTTP {status}"), so they keep passing.
♻️ Proposed change
if !(200..300).contains(&self.status) {
- bail!("HTTP {} for {url}", self.status);+ let detail: String = self.body.chars().take(300).collect();+ bail!("HTTP {} for {url}: {detail}", self.status);
}
Based on learnings: "include the actual response body/content in the exception message or as exception context, not just the status code".

Fix the 404 assertion. run now skips raw-file 404 responses, so this test fails.
Scanner::get_file in scan.rs logs HTTP 404, 410, and 451 responses, records them in skipped_urls, and returns Ok(None). run therefore returns Ok, and unwrap_err() panics. The test name says hard failures propagate. Use a status that still aborts, such as 500. Add a separate assertion for the 404 skip behavior.

Add skippedUrls to the expected JSON. The current assertion fails.
Report now has a skipped_urls field. With rename_all = "camelCase", it serializes as "skippedUrls": []. The expected object has no such key, so assert_eq! fails. This test guards the public JSON contract, so it must include the new field.
