fix(assail): execute configuration and build input coverage - #258
Assail declared configuration and build inputs as candidates without executing suitable adapters. Echidna therefore correctly failed incomplete coverage. The CI repair also exposed a handwritten lock helper, missing exact source-policy entries, an invalid workflow context and a separate live Actions allowlist mismatch.
Published changes
Current head: e711e35819450d78784de4787e25c8597ea878e3.
Use one registry for discovery, executed adapters and recorded depth. Parse JSON/YAML/TOML with duplicate-key controls; inspect recognized interpreter bodies, HTML/CSS, Containerfiles, Just and Forth. Unknown or malformed input remains an explicit gap.
Preserve traversal scope, severity and the two deliberate Critical proof fixtures. Completion means every declared adapter ran; it does not prove complete semantic security.
Retain all 18 reproduced review corrections, including shell options, source-language voting, F# versus Forth, encoded HTML/CSS, credential references and UID-zero spellings.
Replace the handwritten native-lock path with checksum-qualified official v0.2.0 verification and the unchanged pinned canonical reconciliation. Native failures, malformed results and contradictory output cannot become success. Source-tree cleanliness and exact workflow path/SHA policy are checked.
Migrate the inherited Standards callers, initialize runner-local paths inside the job, and add only the exact existing canonical/SLSA references to tree policy. No live Settings change is implied.
Executed evidence
The scanner source passed 763 local Rust tests with zero failures and four existing ignored tests, plus Clippy and an http build before the execution workspace was lost. All 18 new counterexamples were reproduced before repair and passed after it.
The same qualified binary scanned two immutable Echidna snapshots: historical fe018f9 remained incomplete (906/909, three real parse failures); repaired 019cbc4 completed 908/908. Both Critical proof-fixture findings remained active. Those are historical consumer receipts for their exact source, not current-head estate qualification.
Canonical recovery run41924139410 generated the native lock for exact subject fca4977 with producer5fb78ed1a6c12896457c198a5acc426886b53fca. Artifact13368187636 was checksum-verified; the unchanged candidate has SHA256 23698d6d8f5896ac380c5b20ddb65826ee718b1ac4df08e251ea32d93c4436d8 and Git blob784b7d643b81bc2ce0c59a99689ca61b435820fc. Commit b934 applied only that file.
The actual e711 CI Integrity job126914207821 passed 50 controls, official native verification and bidirectional lock sync. It examined 127 executable references in 29 workflow files with zero tree-policy gaps. Raw native status/output artifacts are retained.
Remaining boundaries
GitHub's Rust startup diagnostic at b934 explicitly rejects the canonical Standards reusable workflow under the effective Actions policy. The live Settings page confirms that the five exact canonical workflow admissions are absent. The repository policy file cannot modify that setting.
Eleven current Sonar annotations are being repaired at source; a passing quality gate is not closure of those findings. The default branch also has open code-scanning alerts that need source-specific disposition and a fresh default-branch analysis. Current hosted scanner/build results and substantive review remain required before merge and downstream adoption. No findings, fixture paths, gate requirements or reviews are suppressed.
Use one discovery/execution registry, real configuration and markup parsers,
and bounded build-script/Forth checks. Preserve unsupported dialects and
parse errors as coverage gaps; record each adapter's actual depth.
Exercise malformed, duplicate, executable-data and unsupported controls.
Completion remains independent of severity, proof and execution evidence.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added security analysis for configuration files, build inputs, HTML, CSS and Forth source, including supported embedded scripts.
Coverage reporting now recognises these input types and indicates when analysis is incomplete.
Documentation
Added guidance on input coverage, supported checks and limitations.
Updated PHP coverage documentation to clarify how unsupported source inputs are reported.
CI
Updated workflow integrity checks and evidence reporting. Local checks distinguish source validation from GitHub admission, which remains unverified.
Tightened validation of workflow references and local policy files.
The change adds adapters for configuration, HTML, CSS, container and Just build inputs, and Forth. Discovery and analysis use registered adapters, including extraction and analysis of supported embedded scripts. It also revises CI integrity checks, workflow policy validation, startup triage and lock-verification evidence.
Discovery includes registered adapters. The analyzer dispatches to adapters before source-language analysis and records findings or unsupported and parse-error outcomes. Documentation describes adapter scope and coverage limits.
Configuration and executable configuration fields Cargo.toml, src/assail/configuration.rs, src/assail/configuration_scripts.rs, tests/configuration_coverage_tests.rs
JSON, YAML and TOML inputs receive recursive checks. Supported GitHub Actions steps and package.json scripts are extracted for embedded-language analysis.
HTML and CSS analysis Cargo.toml, src/assail/templates.rs, tests/template_coverage_tests.rs
Parser-backed analysis checks HTML attributes, URLs, remote script integrity metadata and CSS constructs. It also analyses supported embedded scripts, JSON and stylesheets.
Container, Just and Forth inputs src/assail/build_inputs.rs, src/assail/forth.rs, tests/build_input_coverage_tests.rs, tests/input_adapter_review_tests.rs
Container and Just analysis extracts supported commands and recipes without executing them. Forth analysis tokenises source and checks selected hazardous words.
CI integrity verification .githooks/validate-actions-lock.sh, .github/workflows/ci-integrity.yml, scripts/ci/actions-lock-transport.sh, scripts/ci/test-ci-integrity.sh
Integrity verification uses pinned tools and Standards helpers, invokes native lock checks and retains evidence. Regression tests exercise the validation and transport behaviour.
Workflow policy and references .github/actions-allowlist.json, .github/workflows/*, scripts/ci/check-allowed-actions.sh, scripts/ci/pin-workflow-uses.py, Justfile
The allowlist checker parses workflow YAML and validates executable references against policy. Reusable workflow references are updated, and local pin generation is replaced with guidance for the native recovery process.
Triage and coverage documentation scripts/ci/triage-startup-failure.sh, docs/CI-CD.adoc, docs/input-coverage.adoc, docs/php-coverage.adoc
Startup triage reports source and API observations without attributing platform causes. Documentation describes adapter limits, CI gate scope, evidence and lock updates.
The new input adapters work as intended. Some edge cases remain: HTML with an & in a URL query, or an inline style ending in a quoted string, can make a whole file an explicit coverage gap instead of reporting its findings. One documentation passage is also stale. None of these is serious, but they are worth fixing.

Explanation
The title "fix(assail): execute configuration and build input coverage" matches the main change. The changeset adds configuration (JSON, YAML, TOML), build-input (Containerfile, Justfile), HTML/CSS, and Forth adapters, and registers them in discovery and execution so that Assail runs them. The title also omits the CI and Standards policy changes, which the description says are secondary. It is specific and follows the conventional-commit style.

non-configuration adapters retain hardcoded-secret checks without running
whole-file URL checks indiscriminately. Add adapter-appropriate checks for

Allowlist the new reusable-workflow owner
The checked CI Integrity pipeline runs scripts/ci/check-allowed-actions.sh, but .github/actions-allowlist.json permits hyperpolymath/* and has no rule for metadatastician/*. Running that exact check reports GAPs for all five migrated callers (governance, Hypatia, mirror, Rust CI, and scorecard), so the reusable workflows are refused under the repository's current actions policy and the integrity gate fails. Update the allowlist/policy atomically with this owner migration, or retain an allowed owner.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Regenerate the workflow lock after changing callers
The CI Integrity workflow runs python3 scripts/ci/pin-workflow-uses.py --map .github/workflows/action-pins.json --check, but the committed actions.lock still records the old hyperpolymath/standards coordinates and SHA for every changed caller. Running that exact command returns lockfile is stale with exit 1, so every PR fails the repository's required integrity gate even if the new reusable workflows otherwise start. Regenerate the lock and associated pin metadata in the same change.

Analyze the complete SHELL command prefix
When a Containerfile declares a command-bearing prefix such as SHELL ["bash", "-c", "eval \"$INPUT\""], Docker appends subsequent shell-form RUN text to that entire vector, so the third element is the source Bash executes. This branch retains only the first element's language and discards every remaining argument; the adapter then scans the benign RUN text instead, misses the eval, and marks the file analyzed. Parse the complete SHELL vector and either extract its command source or leave unsupported prefixes as a coverage gap.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Unwrap env-launched interpreters in exec vectors
For an exec form such as RUN ["/usr/bin/env", "bash", "-c", "eval \"$INPUT\""], the first program is env, so this whitelist silently skips the vector and the file is marked analyzed even though Bash executes the dangerous inline source. The inspected local env --help documents the syntax as env ... [COMMAND [ARG]...] and states that it runs COMMAND; unwrap supported env options and assignments to inspect the launched interpreter, or record this form as unsupported.

Scope git revision checks to Cargo dependency tables
In a Cargo.toml, any object containing a key named git is treated as a dependency, regardless of its structural location or even the value's type. For example, valid custom metadata such as [package.metadata.release] followed by git = false receives a High git dependency has no immutable revision finding despite declaring no dependency. Track the Cargo table path and apply this check only to actual dependency, patch, or replacement specifications.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Check credential literals stored in arrays
When a credential-named field contains an array, such as {"access_token":["hardcoded-token-value"]}, value.as_str() skips the named-field check and recursion subsequently visits each string without retaining the access_token key. The valid configuration is consequently marked completely analyzed with no Critical hardcoded-secret finding. Propagate the credential-field context through arrays, or inspect string array elements before descending.
Retire the handwritten native actions.lock generator and its automatic
Justfile path. Verify the official v0.2.0 executable digest, use the unchanged
published Standards 087f6bff helper and lock-sync boundary, and retain raw
native status/output with immutable source identity. A temporary exact-argv
transport withholds reports from reconciliation when the process exits outside
0/1; it does not copy upstream finding logic. Retire it after Standards #1394
is signed, hosted-qualified and adopted.
Parse executable YAML refs and match complete reusable paths and exact SHAs.
Add only the five existing canonical Standards permissions. Preserve unrelated
policy, required job context, triggers and permissions. Correct startup triage
so zero jobs are not treated as proof of a live Actions policy failure.
Add isolated protocol, malformed-native-lock and exact-coordinate controls.
Six final shell sources pass bash -n; seven direct jq schema controls pass.
Full YAML/native regression execution is pending hosted CI: the isolated
binaries are unavailable locally, and automatic approval review rejected the
attempted temporary protocol subset before process creation because its normal
rm-style cleanup was not permitted. No runtime/native success is claimed.
This is an unreferenced review candidate. actions.lock is unchanged and must
come from the existing canonical recovery workflow at the published immutable
source. Existing scan coverage and critical fixture findings are untouched.
Normal git status can conceal a modified consumed helper or workflow behind
assume-unchanged/skip-worktree flags. Refuse these flags and tracked,
untracked or ignored changes in both exact repository roots. Require a
completed native 0/1 receipt before accepting the unchanged canonical helper.
Add actual Git fixture controls for both hidden flags in both checkouts and
an ignored action.yml shadowing a tracked action.yaml. The new shell syntax
passes bash -n; execution of the expanded suite is pending hosted CI with
the official native binary and YAML parser. Do not transfer earlier runtime
receipts to these source bytes. No native lock or refs are changed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Inspect the entire Actions custom-shell template
When a workflow uses a custom template such as shell: bash -c 'eval "$INPUT"; source {0}', GitHub executes the command-bearing remainder of the template, but this code retains only bash and analyzes the benign run field. The workflow is therefore marked completely analyzed while the eval that actually runs bypasses the shell checks; parse the full template or leave command-bearing templates unsupported.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Decode CSS escapes before classifying URLs
When a stylesheet uses a valid escaped scheme such as url("h\74tp://remote.invalid/x"), CSS parsing decodes \74 to t, but this raw substring test never sees http://. The plaintext resource consequently receives no InsecureProtocol finding while the stylesheet is marked completely analyzed; normalize CSS escapes before testing URL schemes or record escaped URLs as unsupported.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Mask dot-paren text before checking Forth words
For standard Forth such as : banner .( system ) ;, .( ... ) parses the enclosed text for display, but this lexer does not treat it as literal data and later reports system as executable CommandInjection. The Forth standard defines .( as parsing text through the closing ), so consume that region like the other string forms before hazard matching.
Split the long HTML, Forth, interpreter-argument, Containerfile and Just readers into documented helpers while retaining check order, findings, source locations and unsupported-input errors. Replace the two redundant OsStr closures and make the existing shell case fallthroughs and test argument explicit.
The existing regression populations, coverage decisions, workflow references and native lock are unchanged. Compilation, formatting, regression execution and Sonar qualification await hosted CI; no local pass is claimed.
Apply exactly eight formatter hunks reported by job126922752314 at the 41cc source. No condition, finding, test, workflow or native-lock behavior changes. The formatter rerun remains pending hosted CI.

Analyze executable data URLs used as script sources
When HTML contains <script src="data:text/javascript,eval(location.hash)"></script>, the browser fetches the valid src URL and executes it as a classic script, but this classifier only recognizes javascript: and vbscript:. Because the remote-script block also ignores data: and adapter inputs skip whole-file cross-language checks, the file is marked analyzed without a DynamicCodeExecution finding. The HTML Standard defines src as the URL from which an external script is fetched; analyze supported script data payloads or leave these inputs explicitly unsupported.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Parse the host after stripping URL credentials
When a configuration endpoint is http://localhost:password@remote.invalid/path, authority.split(':').next() returns localhost, so this classifies the URL as loopback and suppresses the InsecureProtocol finding even though the connection goes to remote.invalid. The URL Standard parses the text before @ as username/password and the following component as the host; parse the URL or remove userinfo before applying the loopback exemption.

Strip only the enclosing quote pair from attribute values.
trim_matches(['\'', '"']) removes every leading and trailing quote character. It does not remove only the enclosing pair. If a value ends with a quote that belongs to the value, that quote is lost.
For example, style="font-family: 'Helvetica'" becomes font-family: 'Helvetica at line 58. Lines 86–88 pass that value to css(...) as element {font-family: 'Helvetica}. The string is unterminated, so the CSS parser can report an error. parsed then rejects the tree, and the error can propagate out of the HTML analysis. The file can then be recorded as a parse_error coverage gap, and its findings are not reported.
The same trim appears at lines 327 and 362. Line 327 reads the type attribute. Line 362 checks CSS literal credentials. Both can receive the same altered value. Use the same helper at all three sites.

Problem
Assail declared configuration and build inputs as candidates without executing suitable adapters. Echidna therefore correctly failed incomplete coverage. The CI repair also exposed a handwritten lock helper, missing exact source-policy entries, an invalid workflow context and a separate live Actions allowlist mismatch.
