fix(sdk): safer retries and waits, empty keys refused early, JS text rules (SDK 1.17.1, Python 0.1.3, Go 0.1.1, web 0.42.4) - #541
Follow-ups the Python and Go ports turned up, done in all three SDKs together.
Retries repeat only what is safe to repeat
With opt-in retries, a POST or PATCH that failed with a network error, a timeout or a 5xx was sent again. It may have gone through the first time, so a retried endpoints.create() could leave an extra endpoint, and a retried test email went out twice. Now:
GET, HEAD, OPTIONS, PUT and DELETE are repeated after a network error, a timeout or a status in retryOn (RFC 9110's idempotent methods).
Any call is repeated after a 429, which the API sends before doing anything.
TypeScript client.ts, Python _api, Go api; RetryOptions docs and the SDK pages say so.
Waits poll from the server's clock (TypeScript, Python)
waitFor/waitForAll set each poll's since to the local time of the previous poll, so when this machine's clock ran ahead of the server's, a request captured in the gap was never returned. The next poll now starts 30 seconds before the newest request seen (its server receivedAt), with repeats skipped by id, as Go 0.1.0 already does. The overlap also covers a capture that commits after a newer one.
Empty keys refused before the headers (TypeScript, conformance)
decodeStandardWebhookSecret() throws for a secret that decodes to no key (whsec_, whitespace), and the Standard Webhooks, Clerk, Resend and forwarding checks decode it first. Before, a request without signature headers got false or missing_headers, and the empty key only failed later in WebCrypto. Python 0.1.2 and Go 0.1.0 already behave this way.
forwarding.json moves to format version 2: expected.invalidSecret marks vectors where the secret itself must be refused with the language's bad-argument error. These include a signature forged with the empty key and requests with no headers at all. Python and Go now read version 2 and run them. Go exports verify.ErrEmptyKey so callers can errors. Is it.
Text read as JavaScript reads it (Python, Go)
Python
Signature headers, content types, durations, hex keys and Retry-After are trimmed of JavaScript's whitespace. str.strip() also takes \x1c-\x1f and \x85 and keeps U+FEFF.
Only ASCII digits count as digits (\d and float() accepted every script's).
Timestamp filters go through a Number() port.
js_json puts array-index keys first, as JSON.stringify does, which matters for the Mailgun and Adyen bodies.
A PayPal certificate URL keeps backslashes in its query; browsers only read them as slashes before it.
The helpers live in a new _js.py.
Go: the content-type matcher, hex keys and Retry-After use webtext.JSTrim instead of strings.TrimSpace. Retry-After reads its bytes as Latin-1, as fetch does.
Review follow-ups
requests.clear() retries: a clear() without before is not repeated after a network error, a timeout or a 5xx in any SDK. The server clears up to its own clock, so a repeat after a clear that went through would also delete what arrived in between.
Timed-out polls: a poll that times out no longer ends a wait in any SDK. The next poll tries again, as the docs already said.
Python js_to_number: it read "0x0x10" as 16, because int() takes a second prefix. It now uses one digit class per base, so the result is NaN, as in JavaScript. Python body matchers also refuse NaN/Infinity in JSON, as JSON.parse does.
Go PEM bodies: whitespace is stripped with JavaScript's set.
Without atob (CodeRabbit): the Buffer fallback validates base64 first, so whsec_! falls back to its raw bytes in every runtime.
Left as they are:
An email whose receivedAt comes from an MX clock more than 30 s ahead could move a mixed wait's boundary past the next HTTP request. This is unlikely with NTP.
TypeScript's matchBodyPath treats any Number()-able segment ("", "+0") as an array index. That quirk is not worth porting.
Retry-After: +5 is read as 5 only by parseInt.
Versions
SDK 1.17.1, Python 0.1.3, Go 0.1.1, web 0.42.4 (docs pages on retries and the empty-key error). Nothing is published until tags are pushed.
Tests
Every new test fails against main's code; I swapped each file back to main's version to check:
TypeScript: retries and waits in client.test.ts, empty keys in verify.test.ts, regenerated vectors, decoding without atob. 813 pass.
Python: test_client.py retries and waits, test_js_text.py with Node's answers as expectations. 646 pass, ruff and mypy clean.
Go: TestRetriesRepeatOnlyWhatIsSafeToRepeat (5xx, dropped connection, timeout), TestRetriesRepeatAPostAfterA429, TestClearIsRepeatedOnlyWithABeforeTime, TestWaitForKeepsPollingAfterAPollTimesOut, header digits, JSTrim. go test -race passes with WHK_CONFORMANCE_REQUIRED=1, and staticcheck is clean.
…rules in Python and Go
Across the TypeScript, Python and Go SDKs:
- Opt-in retries repeat GET, HEAD, OPTIONS, PUT and DELETE after a network
error, a timeout or a 5xx, and any call after a 429. A POST or PATCH that
failed otherwise may have gone through; a repeated endpoints.create() left
an extra endpoint.
- TypeScript and Python waits poll from 30 seconds before the newest request
seen, by the server's clock (Go already did), so a local clock running
ahead no longer skips requests.
- TypeScript refuses a Standard Webhooks style secret that decodes to an
empty key before reading the headers, like Python 0.1.2 and Go 0.1.0.
forwarding.json moves to format version 2 with expected.invalidSecret
vectors, which all three SDKs run. Go exports verify.ErrEmptyKey.
- Python trims JavaScript's whitespace, reads only ASCII digits, reads
timestamp filters as Number() does, orders array-index keys first in
js_json, and keeps backslashes in a PayPal certificate URL's query. Go
trims JavaScript's whitespace in the content-type matcher, hex keys and
Retry-After.

Walkthrough
The TypeScript, Python, and Go SDKs change request retry and polling behavior, align selected text handling with JavaScript, and reject verification secrets that decode to empty keys. Tests, conformance vectors, documentation, changelog entries, and package versions are updated.

Summary
Request retries and polling packages/sdk*/..., packages/sdk-go/client.go, content/docs/sdk/..., packages/sdk*/README.md
The clients restrict retries after network errors, timeouts, and configured statuses based on request method; all methods can retry after 429. Polling uses a boundary 30 seconds before the newest finite server timestamp. Tests and retry documentation cover these rules.
JavaScript-compatible text handling packages/sdk-go/internal/..., packages/sdk-go/matchers.go, packages/sdk-go/client.go, packages/sdk-python/src/webhooks_cc/..., packages/sdk-python/tests/test_js_text.py
Go and Python use JavaScript-compatible whitespace handling in selected parsing and matching paths. Python also adds JavaScript-style numeric conversion and object-key ordering, and limits PayPal URL backslash replacement to the URL portion before a query or fragment.
Verification rejects secrets that decode to empty keys before checking request headers. The Go API exports verify.ErrEmptyKey. Forwarding vectors add an invalidSecret outcome and test empty-key cases.

App and SDK version values advance. Changelog entries describe the SDK behavior updates.
The release notes need a more accurate retry description, and a narrow secret-decoding case may reject a usable raw secret. These are bounded issues to address or explicitly accept before merging.

…uses in docs
Buffer skips base64 characters it cannot read where atob throws, so in a
runtime without atob "whsec_!" decoded to an empty key instead of falling
back to its UTF-8 bytes. fromBase64 now checks the input against
forgiving-base64 first; a test compares the key with and without atob.
The docs and changelog name the default retry statuses (429, 500, 502, 503
and 504) instead of "5xx".

…ng, review fixes
From an independent review of this PR:
- requests.clear() without before is not retried after a network error, a
timeout or a 5xx in any SDK: the server clears up to its own clock, so a
repeat after a clear that went through would also delete what arrived in
between.
- A poll that times out no longer ends waitFor/waitForAll in any SDK; it is
retried like a network failure, as the docs already said.
- Python js_to_number refused nothing after a hex, octal or binary prefix
that int() reads itself ("0x0x10" gave 16); one digit class per base now.
- Python body matchers parse JSON as JSON.parse does (no NaN or Infinity),
through a json_parse shared with verify.
- Go strips JavaScript's whitespace from PEM bodies, as the TypeScript SDK
does.
- The wait docstring no longer claims more than the five-minute lookback
gives before the first request arrives.
