Kyle Nelson

Hi, I'm Kyle. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2026 in Mechanical Engineering, with coursework toward a minor in EE and CS. I am an AI Engineer for my own AI integration company, Desert Mango. I am excited about Embedded Software, and I build sensors and underwater robots.

  • my portfolio — detailed project and life experiences with photos and video

A sensor pod I built at Woods Hole, in its 3D-printed case

From July to September 2026 I was a visiting researcher at TU Hamburg in Germany. I worked on self-driving firmware for a small underwater robot called the HippoCampus. I built its navigation and control stack: probabilistic state estimation from IMU data, thruster control policies trained in Isaac Lab, world mapping from ultrasonic range data, and path planning driven by interchangeable environmental sensors like pH, temperature, and light.

Earlier, I spent two summers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, building a small low-cost environmental sensor that measures ecosystem health by evaluating pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and conductivity. At UC Berkeley I led the sub-team that wrote foundational code to enable a fleet of small robotic sail boats to talk to each other and to shore via a completely peer-to-peer radio mesh network.

Selected work

  • learning to swim — personal TUHH Hippocampus Robotics contribution documentation
  • hippocampus docs — documentation site I built for the TUHH Hippocampus Robotics lab, with a custom CMS for maintenance
  • scalup — environmental sensor records ocean conditions unsupervised for days
  • me-103-final-project — determines steak cooking "doneness" from heat-camera video
  • Village-of-Sundar — a tile-based survival game with seed-based map generation, written in Java with a partner for UC Berkeley CS61B: Data Structures

Repositories ending in mcp empower AI agents to use APIs the way a person would.

  • onshape-mcp — create and assemble 3D parts in Onshape, a design program
  • runpod-mcp — runs AI training on rented computers with spending limits and approval gates
  • linkedin-mcp — drafts a change to your LinkedIn profile and shows it to you; nothing is saved unless you approve it
