Hermes OpenCLI — AI-Agent-Native Web Automation & Google Search Tool

License: MIT Hermes OpenCLI

A native Hermes Agent tool that wraps the OpenCLI CLI for 100+ website adapters, headless browser automation, and full Google Search (web, images, video, news, and reverse image lookup) — all through a token-efficient JSON interface designed for LLM agents.

What This Tool Does

Capability Description
🌐 Web Search Google web search with multi-page results (20-30 per query)
🖼️ Image Search Google Images with thumbnails, dimensions, and two-hop full-resolution extraction
🎬 Video Search Google Videos with titles and source URLs
📰 News Search Google News with current headlines and article links
📄 Page Reading Extract any webpage as clean markdown via browser
🔍 Reverse Image Google Lens / search-by-image (experimental)
🏃 Site Adapters 173 sites, 1,275 commands: HackerNews, Reddit, arXiv, PubMed, Stack Overflow, GitHub Trending, CoinGecko, and 160+ more
🖱️ Browser Control Drive a logged-in Chrome: navigate, click, type, extract, eval JavaScript

Quick Start

# 1. Install OpenCLI
npm install -g @jackwener/opencli

# 2. Install the Hermes tool
git clone https://github.com/lesterppo/hermes-opencli.git
cd hermes-opencli
bash install.sh ~/.hermes/hermes-agent

# 3. Wire into Hermes (add to toolsets.py _HERMES_CORE_TOOLS and config.yaml)
# 4. Restart Hermes

Usage (for AI Agents)

# Google web search — 20-30 results across 3 pages
opencli(action='google', command='python asyncio tutorial', search_type='web')

# Google image search — 15 thumbnails with dimensions
opencli(action='google', command='sunset mountain', search_type='image')

# Full-resolution images — two-hop: thumbnail → source page → original image
opencli(action='google', command='cat', search_type='image_full')

# Google video search
opencli(action='google', command='python tutorial', search_type='video')

# Google news search
opencli(action='google', command='AI agent', search_type='news')

# Read any webpage as markdown
opencli(action='google', command='https://docs.python.org/3/', search_type='read')

# HackerNews top stories
opencli(action='run', command='hackernews top --limit 5')

# Browse all 173 adapters
opencli(action='list')  # → {sites: 173, total_commands: 1275}

# Drive Chrome browser
opencli(action='browser', command='open https://example.com')
opencli(action='browser', command='state')
opencli(action='browser', command='extract')

How It Works

The tool dispatches actions to the OpenCLI CLI via subprocess:

  • action='run' → opencli <site> <command> -f json (smart retry joins multi-word queries)
  • action='list' → opencli list -f json (parsed summary with site/strategy metadata)
  • action='browser' → opencli browser hermes <cmd> (persistent Chrome session)
  • action='google' → browser automation against live Google (multi-page, two-hop, DOM extraction)

Google search uses browser automation: navigate → wait → eval JavaScript extractors → parse JSON. Image search uses a two-hop workflow: search thumbnails → click → extract source page links → visit source → find largest image.

Installation Requirements

npm install -g @jackwener/opencli     # OpenCLI CLI (Node.js >= 20)

For Google search and browser actions:

  • Chrome browser with OpenCLI Browser Bridge extension
  • Launch: google-chrome --remote-debugging-port=9222 --load-extension=<path>

Public adapters (HackerNews, arXiv, GitHub Trending, etc.) work without Chrome.
