Minor Changes

  • 2254796: Default responseEncoding to false. The server now returns string values as plain JSON instead of base64, which cuts response sizes by up to 25%. Set responseEncoding: "base64" to keep the previous behavior.

    Behavior changes with the new default:

    • String values that start with a UTF-8 BOM keep it. Automatic deserialization still ignores the BOM, so a BOM-prefixed JSON value is parsed as before; other BOM-prefixed strings, and all strings with automaticDeserialization: false, are returned exactly, BOM included.
    • Invalid UTF-8 (binary data) is still replaced with U+FFFD, but the server now replaces each invalid byte, so the number of replacement characters can differ. Binary values were not preserved before either.
    • A nested OK status reply (e.g. a Lua script returning {redis.call("SET", ...)}) no longer sometimes decodes to 8.
    • Error replies nested in arrays (e.g. Lua pcall results) are no longer garbled.

    Static aborted signal (all encodings):

    • abort() with no reason or with an Error returns null. With responseEncoding: false it used to return a serialized error object.
    • abort(null) returns null instead of "Aborted".
    • With the new default, other reasons are returned as is: strings that look like base64 (e.g. "abcd") are no longer garbled, and booleans and objects are no longer dropped.
    • Non-Latin-1 string reasons no longer throw a TypeError on Node.

Patch Changes

  • #16403 5f82a56 Thanks @dependabot! - Update DEFAULT_COMPAT_DATE to 2026-10-22

    Use the bundled workerd release's compatibility date by default when scaffolding new projects or when no compatibility date is configured.

  • #16437 e651d7c Thanks @dependabot! - Update DEFAULT_COMPAT_DATE to 2026-10-23

    Use the bundled workerd release's compatibility date by default when scaffolding new projects or when no compatibility date is configured.

  • #16476 8a30d8e Thanks @tannerlinsley! - Update Undici to 7.30.1 to prevent a malformed HTTP response from crashing development tools

    The updated shared dependency rejects excessive content encodings without leaving an unhandled stream error when the server closes the connection early. This fixes GHSA-xjj6-f33q-929c and keeps the matching Undici types on the same version.

  • #16490 bcd618d Thanks @petebacondarwin! - Update Zod to 4.6.6 to address GHSA-mrhx-c7xc-m3w5

    The updated shared dependency fixes excessive memory consumption when validating oversized collections. This updates both the published Zod dependencies and the copies bundled into development tools and Workers.

  • #16335 28cca4c Thanks @robingenz! - Fix Worker tests failing when CommonJS dependencies require packages with separate import and require entries on Vite 8. The fix needs Vite 8.2.1 or later; Vite 8.0.x, 8.1.x and 8.2.0 stay affected.

Patch Changes

  • #15708 3464abc Thanks @samstarling! - Dispose Workflow step results and introspection modifiers after use

    Release RPC resources deterministically during local Workflow execution and introspection. This prevents undisposed RPC warnings and requests being cancelled after their execution context has ended. Live step results retain their original data shape, including typed-array offsets and backing buffers. Callbacks that finish after a step times out also release their results, cancelling unused streams without delaying retries.

    Disposing an introspector still aborts the instance if modifier acquisition failed, without introducing a teardown error. Non-stream results containing function-valued array properties are rejected according to the serialisable-output contract, instead of silently discarding those properties during storage normalisation.

  • #15846 a88cac4 Thanks @oddharsh! - Fail with an error instead of hanging when local dev requests can't work under Bun

    Bun's fetch() ignores the undici dispatcheroven-sh/bun#39247createTestHarness()'s server.fetch() and server.getWorker()'s fetch(), email() and scheduled() now throw a UserError, requests to the dev server URL get a 503 naming the cause, and starting remote bindings throws a UserError. Each of these used to hang with no error. server.getWorker().getEnv() and getExport() keep working under Bun.

Patch Changes

  • #16135 329d757 Thanks @Zyles! - Fix test runs slowing down file after file, and stalling, with isolate: false

    With isolate: false, Vitest hands a worker's module runner to the pool again for every test file the worker runs, and the pool wrapped the runner's module fetches in one more layer each time, so imports got slower with every file until runs stalled. The pool now patches each module runner once.

  • #1460 8e60ded Thanks @vicb! - chore: bump @opennextjs/aws to 4.1.12

    See details at https://github.com/opennextjs/opennextjs-aws/releases/tag/v4.1.12

    • Fix Next.js 15 builds failing with "Next.js version 15.x.x is not supported by the Next.js team" now that Next.js 15 is 2 years old. A major version stays supported until the second next major (Next.js 17) is released.
  • #1414 15f4c9e Thanks @allangreatsoftwares! - fix: render server action redirects for the host of the request

  • #1439 1ebbc55 Thanks @mathurshubham! - fix: inline named webpack chunks (webpackChunkName) in the server runtime

    Apps built with webpack returned a 500 with Error: Unknown chunk N when the server code loaded a chunk named with /* webpackChunkName: "..." */, i.e. from a next/dynamic or import() in the app or in a dependency. Named chunks are now bundled into the Worker and load correctly.

Updates @playwright/test from 1.63.0 to 1.64.1

Release notes

Sourced from @playwright/test's releases.

v1.64.1

Bug Fixes

  • #43247 [Bug]: _electron.launch intermittently loses a packaged app's first window since 1.64.0
  • #43242 [Regression]: Chromium 155+ aborts a preflighted cross-origin redirect whenever any route is registered (net::ERR_ABORTED)

v1.64.0

🧰 WebMCP

New page.webmcp and frame.webmcp give access to the tools that a page registers through the experimental WebMCP browser API, so you can test them like any other part of your app:

const browser = await chromium.launch({ args: ['--enable-features=WebMCP'] });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
for (const tool of await page.webmcp.tools())
console.log(tool.name, tool.description);
const result = await page.webmcp.callTool('add', { a: 2, b: 40 });
console.log(result.content[0].text); // "42"

Playwright MCP also supports WebMCP by default, with page-defined tools offered to the agent as webmcp_<tool>. Pass --no-webmcp to opt out.

playwright-cli exposes them as well:

playwright-cli webmcp-list
playwright-cli webmcp-call search_catalog --params '{"query":"cats"}'

🎬 Better videos

Videos can now be recorded at a custom frame rate, and the decorations for actions are styled with plain CSS:

// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
video: {
mode: 'on',
size: { width: 1920, height: 1080 },
fps: 60,
show: {
actions: {
style: {
point: 'width: 20px; height: 20px; border-radius: 50%; background: red',
</tr></table>
