Disclosure first: I run Barcodepedia. This is a suggestion, and no is a fine answer.

This adds one entry to Business Records > Company Profiles in public/arf.json. I put it at the end of the folder and filled in every metadata field.

Barcodepedia (https://barcodepedia.com) is a free product encyclopedia sorted by barcode. You can search by barcode, or by product, brand or company name.

Why I think it fits here: the tools in Company Profiles all start from a company name. I couldn't find one that starts from a product on a shelf. Barcodepedia does, and its company pages keep the brand owner separate from the company that makes the product under licence and from whoever registered the barcode. Two pages to look at:

Every fact links to the page it came from.

Limits, so you know what you'd be adding:

  • Coverage is about 1,600 products today, mostly food and drink from North America, the Nordics and the EU, and it is growing quickly as new products are added from public sources. Plenty of barcodes you try won't have a page yet.
  • There's no public API and the data isn't openly licensed.
  • Lookups are passive. They go to Barcodepedia's servers behind Cloudflare, and a lookup for a barcode with no page gets counted so I know what to add next. The opsecNote in the entry says the same thing.
  • No account and no ads. The only cookie is a session cookie, nothing that tracks you, and analytics is a self-hosted Umami.

I checked that the site is live today. If it fits better under Encoding / Decoding > Barcodes / QR I'm happy to move it, or to cut the description down.

Barcodepedia (https://barcodepedia.com) is a free product encyclopedia
sorted by barcode. You type in an EAN or UPC and get the product and the
companies behind it.

The company pages keep the brand owner apart from whoever makes the
product under licence and whoever registered the barcode. Those are
often different companies. Coca-Cola in Denmark is a good example: The
Coca-Cola Company owns the brand, but Carlsberg bottles it and the
barcodes are registered to Carlsberg.

Each fact links to the page it came from. No account and no ads. There
is no public API and the data isn't openly licensed, so api is false.
