Why This Exists

Most consumer neurotechnology software forces researchers, clinicians, and engineers into walled gardens. Official mobile applications lock raw data behind subscription paywalls, discard high-resolution telemetry, or restrict data export to high-level "meditation scores."

Legacy community tools like BlueMuse are Windows-only and require external BLED112 USB dongles. Python scripting workarounds often suffer from Bluetooth connection drops, broken timestamp jitter, and undocumented firmware changes on the new Muse S Athena (MS-03) model.

MindVault solves this. Built with a native Local-First Architecture, MindVault connects directly to the Muse S Athena headband over your computer's built-in Bluetooth (Windows, macOS, and Linux). It delivers an instant, zero-latency 256 Hz electroencephalography visualizer, continuous impedance monitoring, and standard EDF+ / CSV exports for MNE-Python and EEGLAB. No phone app, no dongle, and no cloud upload required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I stream raw EEG from Muse S Athena directly on macOS or Linux?

Yes. MindVault connects directly to the Muse S Athena headband over your computer's built-in Bluetooth adapter using native OS Bluetooth APIs. No mobile phone intermediary, no BlueMuse, and no BLED112 USB dongle is required.

What is the exact sampling rate and bit resolution of Muse S Athena EEG?

Muse S Athena streams 4 EEG channels (TP9, AF7, AF8, TP10) at 256 Hz. The EEG samples are packed using 14 bits per sample with a scale factor of 1450.0 / 16383.0 µV/LSB (~0.0885 µV per LSB). (Note: A common misconception states that Athena EEG is 20-bit; our cross-validation demonstrates that 20-bit packing belongs to the 64 Hz optical PPG/fNIRS stream, while EEG remains 14-bit).

How do I load MindVault recordings into MNE-Python or EEGLAB?

MindVault exports standard EDF+ files with calibrated microvolt physical dimensions and standard 10-20 channel names (TP9, AF7, AF8, TP10). In Python, you can load them in one line:

import mne
raw = mne.io.read_raw_edf("session_2026-09-14.edf", preload=True)
print(raw.info)

Can I use MindVault for event-related potential (ERP) and stimulus synchronization?

Event marker injection, low-latency Lab Streaming Layer (LSL) outlets, and OSC streaming are currently being finalized as part of the upcoming MindVault Lab release. If your research lab requires early access to stimulus-locking APIs, please register interest for Lab.
