Summary

  • task docker:prune: Docker-in-Docker stores its images and build cache on the dind-var-lib-docker volume, which survives rebuilds, so it only grows. In this session it had reached about 18 GB of reclaimable data: the build cache of past devcontainer build runs plus old images. The task removes the build cache, stopped containers and unused images, and keeps every volume, so stack data such as postgres is untouched.
  • README → Troubleshooting → "Running out of disk": documents the task, and notes that on Windows Docker Desktop's WSL .vhdx keeps the freed space until it is compacted.
  • pytest cache off (addopts = "-p no:cacheprovider" in .repo/pyproject.toml): no more .repo/.pytest_cache on the workspace bind mount. This covers both task repo:test and CI.

I checked the hooks, Taskfiles and lifecycle scripts for anything else that writes files. The only writes are the intended ones: .devcontainer/.env, git hooks, the shell-profile line, and .repo/.venv for the test suite, which is gitignored.

Test plan

  • task check (lint, repo check, 45 tests, conventions: no findings)
  • A test run leaves the existing .repo/.pytest_cache untouched; its timestamp is still Sep 22
  • CI

Docker-in-Docker keeps its images and build cache on a volume that survives
rebuilds, so it only grows; `task docker:prune` frees the build cache,
stopped containers and unused images and keeps every volume. The README gains
a "Running out of disk" entry, including the Docker Desktop vhdx caveat.
pytest no longer writes .repo/.pytest_cache onto the workspace bind mount.
