📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • NanoCLR and deployment images can now be staged and verified separately, then requested for update together. This helps keep dependent images paired during the update.
    • When both images are updated together, confirming the deployment also confirms the NanoCLR; if the pair is not confirmed, both are reverted together.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for staging, requesting, confirming, and recovering paired updates, including expected results and compatibility considerations.

The update API can verify images without marking them pending, then request multiple verified images together. Documentation describes staging nanoCLR and deployment as a pair, plus their post-reboot confirmation and reversion behavior. Tests cover request outcomes and invalid arguments.

Changes: Paired update flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stage and request images
nanoFramework.Runtime.InFieldUpdate/UpdateManager.cs, Tests/InFieldUpdateTests/*, docs/update-sessions.md, docs/overview.md, docs/updating-clr-and-deployment.md, docs/writing-an-update-provider.md, README.md
CompleteUpdateSession(session, requestUpdate) can leave a verified image waiting. RequestUpdate requests multiple verified images together. Tests cover waiting-image states, request results, and invalid arguments. The guides describe staging and requesting both images.
Confirm or revert the pair
nanoFramework.Runtime.InFieldUpdate/UpdateManager.cs, docs/confirm-and-revert.md, docs/updating-clr-and-deployment.md
The documentation states that paired images remain in testing until deployment confirmation confirms both. It also describes paired reversion and conditions where the pair rule does not apply.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 34c4f

The new API for staging bundled updates is documented, but one recovery step can tell integrators to reboot into a nanoCLR paired with an incompatible deployment. A device in that state may not recover without intervention. Correct that guidance before merging.
