Adds a versioned release pipeline for pycunls-cu12 and pycunls-cu13 through Kitmaker to PyPI and pypi.nvidia.com, while preserving import pycunls. Builds reuse the existing Docker scripts and shared build/test workflow.

  • Build and test four x86_64 configurations: CUDA 12.8.1 and 13.2.0 on Ubuntu 22.04/Python 3.10 and Ubuntu 24.04/Python 3.12.
  • Generate CUDA-specific distribution names and CuPy dependencies, repair wheels with auditwheel while keeping CUDA libraries external, and package the source commit and installed CUDA version as build provenance.
  • Preserve finished wheel filenames and separate artifacts by matrix cell. Prepare an offline manifest that validates package metadata, release versions, provenance and SHA256 hashes.
  • Gate Kitmaker submission through the protected pypi environment. Verify public release asset hashes, dry-run each package before upload, and verify published filenames and hashes on both indexes. Retain publication records for each run attempt.
  • Document repository setup, approvals and publication recovery. Publishing is disabled by default, and enabled runs default to dry-run mode.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added automated GitHub releases for CUDA 12 and 13 Python wheels, with optional PyPI publishing.
    • Release wheels include source and CUDA build details, and releases verify the source commit and package version.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated installation guidance for CUDA-specific package names and a wider range of wheel filenames.
    • Strengthened wheel validation during release, upload, and test workflows.
  • Chores
    • Added checks for workflow files and release scripts to development validation.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a release workflow for cuNLS Python wheels. It validates CUDA builds and wheel contents, creates GitHub releases, and prepares and publishes PyPI releases through a manifest-based process.

Changes: Python Release Pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and validate Python wheels
.github/workflows/build-and-test.yml, scripts/Dockerfile, scripts/requirements-build.txt, scripts/build_pycunls*.sh, scripts/test_pycunls*.sh, python/CMakeLists.txt, .pre-commit-config.yaml, README.md
The build workflow passes the release tag and commit to the build. The build scripts validate source and CUDA metadata, produce repaired wheels with provenance, and check wheel contents. The Docker test script runs a dedicated test script that requires one wheel. The package install includes provenance, and the README describes CUDA-specific package names and wheel filenames.
Build matrix and GitHub release
.github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/release_pycunls.sh
The release workflow builds wheels across four configured variants, then creates a GitHub release from the artifacts. The release script validates the repository, tag, and wheel set.
Prepare and publish PyPI releases
.github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/publish_pypi.sh, .gitignore
The workflow prepares a manifest and conditionally starts PyPI publishing. The publisher validates release metadata and wheel artifacts, submits Kitmaker releases, and checks wheel hashes on both indexes. Generated release files are ignored by Git.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 34008

The release pipeline can publish a wheel that fails later preparation checks, while a transient status-poll failure can leave a submitted release needing manual reconciliation. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before relying on the release process.

82-82: The manylinux tag comes from the build host glibc. It is not the minimum glibc the wheel requires.

--plat uses the glibc version of the build image. That version is 2.35 on Ubuntu 22.04 and 2.39 on Ubuntu 24.04. The policy is valid, so the build does not fail. The result is two cells per CUDA major with different platform tags. Each cell gets a unique filename, so prepare accepts both. Verify that this is the intended release set. Note that a pip resolver on an Ubuntu 24.04 host can select the 2.39 wheel. That wheel was built for Python 3.12, so the cp312 tag separates the wheels. The design is consistent. No change is needed if this split is intended.

341-341: cat "$scratch/completed" can fail outside submit_projects.

poll_release is called only from submit_projects. submit_projects truncates $scratch/completed first. The file therefore always exists when this line runs. No defect.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Restrict publishing to tag pushes. The current gate also accepts workflow_dispatch on a tag.

workflow_dispatch can target a v* tag ref. startsWith(github.ref, 'refs/tags/v') is then true. A manual dispatch would run the producer jobs again. gh release create would fail because the release already exists. The publisher would not run in that case. The gate is still weaker than intended. If the release does not exist yet, a manual dispatch would create it and reach publication. Add github.event_name == 'push' to the pypi-publish condition.

Proposed fix
     if: >-
       github.repository == 'nvidia-isaac/cuNLS' &&
+      github.event_name == 'push' &&
       startsWith(github.ref, 'refs/tags/v') &&
       vars.PYPI_PUBLISH_ENABLED == 'true'

Based on learnings: "Require github.event_name == 'push' && startsWith(github.ref, 'refs/tags/vX')."

🌐 Web query:

GitHub CLI gh run watch manual: does it wait for a workflow run to complete when a job is pending environment approval?

💡 Result:

**Yes.** `gh run watch` watches the *workflow run* until it completes, so a job paused for environment approval should keep it waiting; it won’t complete until the approval lets the job proceed or the run otherwise ends. The manual says it watches “until it completes,” and the CLI’s run-status code treats `completed` as distinct from other statuses. ([cli.github.com](https://cli.github.com/manual/gh_run_watch?utm_source=openai))

That’s an inference from the run-level behavior: the manual doesn’t call out environment approvals specifically. By default it refreshes every 3 seconds; `--interval` changes that. ([cli.github.com](https://cli.github.com/manual/gh_run_watch?utm_source=openai))

Approve the pypi deployment before running gh run watch.

The dry-run sequence starts gh run watch before the approval instruction. The pypi-publish job waits for approval on the protected pypi environment, so the watcher can wait until approval is granted. In the documented one-terminal sequence, the operator cannot reach the approval instruction while the watcher is running. A separate browser or terminal is only a workaround.

Move the approval step before the watcher, then download the publication record after the watcher exits. Apply the same ordering in the live publication section.

scripts/publish_pypi.sh:173-175
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retry transient failures on the status poll instead of failing.

poll_release calls kitmaker for a read-only GET /status/$release_uuid. kitmaker calls fail on any non-zero curl exit. A single network error, timeout, or 5xx response therefore ends the job while the submitted release is still running. If the failure happens after the upload=true submission, the job stops before polling or verify_indexes finish. The operator must then check both indexes by hand. The script also says not to resubmit, so a rerun is not a safe recovery.

The status request is idempotent. Retry it until deadline, and fail only when the deadline expires or the response body is not valid status JSON. Keep the strict fail-fast behavior for the non-idempotent POST .../releases call.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Require wheel validation before creating the GitHub release.

Four unique wheel filenames pass this gate even if a wheel fails the metadata or provenance checks in scripts/publish_pypi.sh. The release job and PyPI preparation job run independently after the build. The release can therefore publish a wheel before preparation rejects it. Make successful preparation a prerequisite of release creation, and use its validated manifest to select the release assets.
