Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a built-in supernodal Cholesky solver, now the default sparse solver.
    • Added an optional Schur-complement mode to reduce bundle-adjustment systems by eliminating selected state batches. Available in C++ and Python.
    • Added a Levenberg–Marquardt option to set a minimum diagonal value for damping.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Steps with non-finite lengths are now rejected during minimization.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on solver selection, Schur-complement requirements, and solver behavior.

…he default solver

- LinearSystem abstraction (NormalEquations, SchurSystem): LinearSystemType::
  SchurComplement eliminates the state batches given to
  Problem::SetEliminatedStateBatches (landmarks) and solves the reduced
  system; IMU / visual-inertial and cuSFM stereo-loop BA covered.
- BlockSparseCholeskySolver (SparseLinearSolverType::BlockSparseCholesky):
  supernodal sparse Cholesky on the GPU without external dependencies.
  Analysis: supervariables and their graph on the GPU; approximate minimum
  degree (quotient graph) or nested dissection (balanced BFS separators),
  chosen by a cost model; relaxed amalgamation; panels of <= 64 columns;
  assembly and update maps built on the GPU. Numeric phase: per level a
  factor kernel (forward substitution folded in) and an update kernel, then
  a level-scheduled backward substitution. Vanishing pivots (free gauges)
  fix their unknown; clearly negative pivots are reported.
- Schur always solves the reduced system with BlockSparseCholesky (no
  cuDSS needed); BlockSparseCholesky is also the new default
  sparse_linear_solver_type (was BlockSparsePCG): faster on pose graphs
  with local loop closures, BA and VIO, and exact where PCG does not
  converge (cuSFM, VIO full systems). PCG remains preferable for graphs
  with many long-range random edges and large well-conditioned systems of
  small blocks; documented.
- Tests: BlockSparseCholesky unit tests, Schur system tests, stereo loop
  BA, Cholesky in the typed solver lists; SolverBenchmark.DISABLED_*
  (BENCH_SOLVERS=pcg,chol,cudss) compares the backends. Docs, Python
  bindings and examples updated.
- BlockSparseCholesky: the 16 x 16 diagonal block is factored in groups of
  4 columns (two warp round trips per group instead of one per column):
  8-17% faster solves. Device data uses the plan's named structs (Panel, Run,
  FactorItem, UpdateItem) instead of packed int4/int2; Initialize and
  AnalyzeCholesky split into named steps.
- SchurSystem: Initialize split into setup phases sharing a SetupScratch;
  members grouped into FactorTables, PairTables and ReducedPattern;
  setup-only members, duplicated counts and derived arrays removed.
- NormalEquations: no cached CSR dimensions; the working left-hand side's
  pattern is copied once (values only per solve) in both layouts.
  LinearSystem::StepCurvature is const (ClassifySteps takes a const system),
  LinearSystem::ClearModifications() replaces three resets. The Schur
  complement warns when sparse_linear_solver_type is set and ignored.
- Docs: new guide docs/sphinx/linear_solvers.rst (choosing a solver,
  how BlockSparseCholesky and the Schur complement work); API reference for
  LinearSystemType, linear_system, set_eliminated_state_batches,
  min_diagonal and BlockSparseCholeskySolver; stale docs fixed. Examples
  name BlockSparseCholesky and the Schur complement explicitly.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a GPU supernodal block-sparse Cholesky solver and an optional Schur-complement linear system. It updates minimizer assembly, damping, and solve handling; exposes related C++ and Python APIs; and adds tests, examples, and documentation.

Changes: Linear Solver and Minimizer

Layer / File(s) Summary
Block-sparse Cholesky solver
cunls/linear_solver/*, tests/block_sparse_cholesky_solver_test.cpp, tests/minimizer_benchmark_test.cpp, docs/sphinx/api/linear_solver.rst, docs/sphinx/linear_solvers.rst
Adds symbolic ordering and panel scheduling, GPU factorization and substitutions, solver registration, and tests for varied sparse patterns and pivot cases. The default sparse solver changes from BlockSparsePCG to BlockSparseCholesky.
Linear-system interface and minimizer integration
cunls/minimizer/linear_system.*, cunls/minimizer/normal_equations.*, cunls/minimizer/minimizer.*, cunls/minimizer/*minimizer.*, cunls/minimizer/problem_partition.*, tests/block_hessian_assembler_test.cpp
Introduces a shared LinearSystem interface and moves scaling, damping, and masking into linear-system modifications. LM adds a configurable damping diagonal floor. Failed solves can be rejected by LM, and step control rejects non-finite step magnitudes.
Schur-complement system
cunls/minimizer/schur_system.*, cunls/minimizer/problem.*, cunls/minimizer/hessian_structure.*, tests/schur_system_test.cpp, tests/stereo_loop_ba_test.cpp, tests/triple_smooth_factor_batch.*
Adds eliminated-state batch declarations, Schur-system setup and reduced-system solving, and landmark back-substitution. Tests compare assembled and Schur systems and exercise synthetic bundle-adjustment cases.
Public APIs, examples, and documentation
python/src/*, python/pycunls/*, python/examples/*, examples/*, docs/sphinx/api/minimizer.rst, docs/sphinx/linear_solvers.rst
Exposes linear-system selection and eliminated-state declarations in Python. Bundle-adjustment examples select Schur-complement solving and register landmark batches for elimination. Documentation describes the solver options and constraints.

The new solver and Schur-complement paths are broadly tested. Factors with very large residual blocks that touch eliminated landmarks can silently produce wrong steps. Some documentation also lists unsupported combinations or the old default. These issues are bounded and fit a quick follow-up before merge.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the stale default-solver note in sparse_linear_solver_config.

This PR changes the default of sparse_linear_solver_type to BlockSparseCholesky (Line 147). The sparse_linear_solver_config comment still says "Defaults: BlockSparsePCG with the layout auto-derived …". Users who read the header get the wrong default backend. Name BlockSparseCholesky as the default. Keep the layout note for the BlockSparsePCG case only.

📝 Proposed fix
- * Defaults: `BlockSparsePCG` with the layout auto-derived from the
- * problem's state batches when the structure is set up (the first
-   * Minimize() call on a problem).
+ * Defaults: no extra options (BlockSparseCholesky takes none). With
+ * `BlockSparsePCG`, the block layout is derived from the problem's state
+ * batches when the structure is set up (the first Minimize() call).

Document only the tangent-size combinations that SupportedDims accepts. Both texts say that eliminated batches may have tangent size 1 to 3 and that their neighbours may have tangent size 3, 6 or 9. SupportedDims in cunls/minimizer/schur_system.cu accepts only (1, 6), (2, 6), (3, 6), (3, 3) and (3, 9). ClassifyFactors rejects the other combinations with std::invalid_argument.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject landmark factors whose sizes do not fit the packed entry_meta fields.

EntryLocationsKernel packs four values into one int: the retained-slot column offset, the landmark-slot column offset, m, and n. Each value gets 8 bits. n << 24 is signed, so n >= 128 gives a negative n after meta >> 24. m >= 256 and slot offsets >= 256 wrap to wrong values. No setup code checks these limits.

Example trigger: a landmark factor with 256 residuals, such as a 16×16 photometric patch. AssemblePairsKernel and EliminatePairsKernel then read Jacobians with the wrong row count and stride. The step is wrong, and no error is reported. Add a host check in BuildEvaluationOrder, where has_landmarks is known. Run it only for batches that contain landmark factors, so other factor shapes stay allowed.
