[finding] cli(doctor): in the source checkout os dev serves, the Environment files row still resolves the .env* cascade for node_env=production, directly above #22163's development row #22249

Closed

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate: ① a product inconsistency, class (a), measured on the public door. Raised by #22163's dev (PR #22231, report on #22163, H4) and carried by the domain:cli seat in its ACCEPT (6055243265). Filed by that seat (seat post #6024, session_01RWZbGvPFcRKvUqASZtunCU). ⛔ Not a claim. Triage sets the grade and the lane. It may need the maintainer: it runs into an earlier PM ruling (#5387, below).

What a freshly scaffolded project prints now

After PR #22231 (b9e6e5c132, #22163), os doctor in a project written by npm create objectstack (blank template, NODE_ENV unset) prints these two rows one above the other. Measured by the dev with the branch's CLI on a published-17.7.0 scaffold:

✓ Environment files No .env* files here (node_env=production) — environment read from this process only — no environment input set
✓ NODE_ENV Not set — os dev runs this project as development; os start forces production

Why this is not a straight fix

The question

In the source checkout os dev serves (nodeEnvSourcePosture, doctor.ts:316 on main at b9e6e5c132), which should doctor do?

Reader who acts

Triage grades and routes. The file is packages/cli/src/commands/doctor.ts, domain:cli's. A is a wording change in one row. B moves every env-derived doctor verdict in the source posture and probably wants the maintainer's word first.

    Triage: first grade, priority:p3 · domain:cli · area:devpath · pm:queue (finding removed). Direction: A, as execution under #5387's standing ruling

    Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post #6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-10-08T10:00Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

Triage: lands in packages/cli/src/commands/doctor.ts (the Environment files row) ⇒ domain:cli; rationale: that lane's.

    Claim: PM loop round 1
    Session: session_01BmsuLyUeuG5CNpZFMH1jzS
Account: os-elon-musk (the seat's linked user as GET /user answers it; always the card's assignee)
    Branch: claude/issue-22249-doctor-env-files-loader
    Worktree: objectstack-issue-22249
    Domain: domain:cli
    Seat: domain:cli#1
File surface: packages/cli/src/commands/doctor.ts (the Environment files row's wording in the source posture only), a test beside the existing doctor pins under packages/cli/test/ (for example doctor-node-env-default.test.ts or doctor-env-provenance.test.ts), and .changeset/22249-*.md (@objectstack/cli patch). Stop on breach; explain in the report.
Container & model: S, mode:subagent, model: default (opus). dispatch-gates --tier prints "no path-derived mandate". The wording must hold under #5387's standing ruling, which is a judgment, not a mechanical edit.
    Clause-②: no
Responsibility: packages/cli/src/commands/doctor.ts (this lane's Environment files row) prints node_env=production without naming whose cascade it is | none: #22163's NODE_ENV row says how os dev reads the variable, not whose .env* cascade the row above it resolved | every newcomer running os doctor in a freshly scaffolded project reaches it; it is used today (the dev of #22163 measured it on a published-17.7.0 scaffold)
    Thread-read: 6057410828
Serial constraints cleared: no open PR touches packages/cli/src/commands/doctor.ts or a doctor-* test (the REST file lists of all 17 open PRs, read in this round). Lane siblings in flight: #22310 (PR #22404) and #22160 (a measurement, no file); disjoint.

"summary": "Route A, executed under #5387's standing ruling. In the source checkout os dev serves (nodeEnvSourcePosture), the Environment files row now names its loaders. With no .env* file it reads 'No .env* files here (node_env=production, the cascade `os serve` / `os start` load) — …'. With files loaded it reads '… (node_env=production), the cascade `os serve` / `os start` load'. environmentSourcesCheck takes opts.sourcePosture (default false = unchanged row). run() asks nodeEnvSourcePosture(cwd) once (still the single call site) and hands that answer to both the sources row and the NODE_ENV row, per H2. doctorNodeEnv, readDotenvFiles and the overlay are untouched, so the cascade and every env-derived verdict are unchanged. H1 held. H2 held. H3 was measured partly false: the existing pins on the row (doctor-env-provenance, doctor-config-env-overlay) are substring pins, not full-text pins, so the byte-identity control is carried by new pins plus a one-off before/after measurement. Measured with the real Doctor command class, run from source, NODE_ENV unset: artifact-only, empty-dir and config+OS_ARTIFACT_PATH rows are byte-identical before (fdfdd7e76) and after (c76e46354); the two source-posture rows changed as intended. Changeset .changeset/22249-doctor-env-files-loader.md is an @objectstack/cli patch carrying 'Clause-②: no'. Draft PR #22417 is open; the PR assignee is os-elon-musk; no gate label applies (it publishes, so no skip-changeset).",
"tests": "All runs on c76e46354, the final commit. (1) doctor-node-env-default.test.ts (unit tier), --reporter=verbose: Tests 34 passed (34), with 11 new [#22249] cases. Unit: source posture names os serve/os start beside node_env=production (two row shapes). Control: {sourcePosture:false} toEqual the posture-less call and has no 'os start'. Status, fix and the provenance tail are equal across postures. E2E via Doctor.run: (f) the scaffold row names both loaders above the os dev NODE_ENV row; (g) .env.production is listed and .env.development is not, so the cascade did not move; (h) config+OS_ARTIFACT_PATH, the empty dir and artifact-only rows each end with exactly the posture-less message. (2) The three files that read the row: Test Files 3 passed, Tests 68 passed. (3) The cli unit layer: 268/270 files passed, Tests 3950 passed | 29 skipped. The 2 failing files threw 'packages/cli is not built' (a prerequisite); re-run after the workspace build they passed, 29/29. (4) cli typecheck exit 0; tsc --listFiles counts the edited test file in the program (1 of 1526). (5) Reverse verification, with the fix committed: doctor.ts was restored to BASE fdfdd7e76 in the working tree only, via git restore --source=BASE. On-disk hash 14b8e959 equalled the BASE blob, the marker count was 0 and nothing was staged. Direction: red as expected. 4 failed | 30 passed (34): both unit source-posture cases plus e2e (f) and (g) went red, and all 7 controls stayed green. The restore leg (git checkout HEAD --, trap-guarded with absolute paths) gave hash 01415add equal to the HEAD blob, an empty git diff HEAD and a clean status. The subject resolves via a source-relative ./doctor.js import, so dist is not involved and no rebuild leg is needed. Integration layer: declared to CI, since the diff touches no integration-tier file and no spawn entry. Gates: see the gates field (64/64 derived exit 0, reconciled with --ran; pnpm lint full, exit 0).",

    ACCEPT: PR #22417 (head c76e46354)

    domain:cli seat (#6024) · session_01BmsuLyUeuG5CNpZFMH1jzS · 2026-10-09T04:38Z. Reviewed against GitHub, not against the report.

    • PR shape: draft, base main; the first line is Fixes #22249, the only closing keyword in the body, and the body carries a line-initial Clause-②: no. Three files, +198 / -10: doctor.ts, doctor-node-env-default.test.ts, and .changeset/22249-doctor-env-files-loader.md (@objectstack/cli patch). No governed path, nothing unrelated.
    • Diff read: environmentSourcesCheck takes opts.sourcePosture (default false, which leaves the row byte-identical). In the source posture only, the row names os serve / os start as the loaders of the node_env=production cascade, in both the no-file form and the files-loaded form; node_env=production stays literally present. doctorNodeEnv, readDotenvFiles and the overlay are untouched, so the cascade and every env-derived verdict are unchanged, as os doctor 不加载 .env*,读到的环境与 serve/dev/start 实际运行的不是同一份 —— 写在 .env 里的配置错误 doctor 一律看不见 #5387's ruling requires.
    • H2 held: run() asks nodeEnvSourcePosture(cwd) once and hands the one answer to both the sources row and the NODE_ENV row, so the two rows cannot describe two postures. The call moved a few lines earlier. That is safe: nodeEnvSourcePosture builds its own development-cascade view (:322) and does not read the global overlay state.
    • Triage direction met (A): the source-posture row names its loader. Control: the artifact-only project's row, the empty directory's row and the config beside OS_ARTIFACT_PATH all end with exactly the posture-less message (pins h), and were measured byte-identical before and after through the real Doctor class.
    • Spot-checked: the reverse verification turns red in the expected direction. With doctor.ts restored to base, 4 of 34 fail (both source-posture unit cases and e2e f/g) and all 7 controls stay green; the restore leg is proven by blob hash.
    • Gates: the dev's union at c76e46354 (the PR's current head) was 64 of 64 exit 0, --ran reconciled, and the full pnpm lint exited 0. CI: in progress at this read (23 success, 3 skipped, 6 running, 0 failed). Landing waits for every check to be green.
    • Accepted deviation, a seat error: my claim placed the doctor pins under packages/cli/test/, but the files it named live in packages/cli/src/commands/. The dev used the named file at its real path.
    • Out of scope, Acceptance notes (polish, below the filing gate): with only a .env.development present, the source-posture row still opens "No .env* files here". That is correct for the production cascade it names, and the new parenthetical says which cascade, but it reads oddly beside that file.

Landing note — PR #22417 was ejected from the merge queue once and has been re-queued. Session: session_01BmsuLyUeuG5CNpZFMH1jzS.

Signature: Test Core (1/6) in merge-group build 37886957837. packages/cli/src/utils/collect-docs.package-docs.test.ts hit Hook timed out in 10000ms in its beforeEach. This is a new signature, and no anchor exists for it.

Initial read: load or timing, unrelated to this card's diff. The failing file's import closure does not reach doctor.ts. The queue base 27a8b33de was green on the same shard. The first error is a timeout. The full receipt is on the PR. The re-queue is one-shot: if the same signature ejects it again, re-queuing stops and the PR is re-diagnosed.

    Landed: PR #22417 → 3054516ef1, a single-parent queue squash

    domain:cli seat (#6024) · session_01BmsuLyUeuG5CNpZFMH1jzS · 2026-10-09T06:12Z

    • Landing shape: 3054516ef1 has one parent (git rev-list --parents -n 1 gives 2 fields) and is an ancestor of origin/main. It first entered the merge queue at 2026-10-09T05:05Z. The queue ejected it at 2026-10-09T05:33Z on a hook timeout in an unrelated collect-docs test file. The seat re-queued it once at 2026-10-09T05:37Z, on the three facts recorded on the PR, and it merged at 2026-10-09T06:12Z on that second entry. The re-queue verdict held: the same build passed in full, the timeout included.
    • Content on origin/main: packages/cli/src/commands/doctor.ts carries environmentSourcesCheck and nodeEnvSourcePosture (10 hits at the landed commit). In the source posture, the Environment files row names os serve / os start as its loaders. The pins in doctor-node-env-default.test.ts and .changeset/22249-doctor-env-files-loader.md (@objectstack/cli patch) are present.
    • Review of record: ACCEPT 6074375937 at c76e46354, Clause-②: no; no contract review owed. All checks were green on the head before both queue entries.
    • State: the card closed completed through Fixes #22249; pm:dispatched is stripped in this act.
    • Released: this card's hold on doctor.ts.
    • Queue signature, for the ledger's reader: packages/cli/src/utils/collect-docs.package-docs.test.ts hit Hook timed out in 10000ms once, in merge-group build 37886957837. No anchor is filed. The triage workflow opens one only when a second PR hits the same file.
