What and why

Router feature items from the follow-up tracker. Refs #368.

Hold: merge after 1.0.0 is published. This ships in 1.1.0, and its changelog lines are under ## Unreleased.

  • Diff two navigations: each navigation that ends now keeps the routes it activated, with redacted params and data. diff-navigations and a Compare tab compare two of them:
    • URL and outcome;
    • params and data per route;
    • outlets and components;
    • guard and resolver verdicts;
    • phase timing, lazy loads and request counts.
  • Live open-redirect check: flags a guard, resolver or error-handler redirect whose target is the value of a query param, and app code that navigates to a return-URL param. It shows as a badge in the timeline, a hub message, and a line in explain-navigation.
  • Navigation API and error handler: listens to window.navigation events without intercepting them, and records a withNavigationErrorHandler handler that throws. History changes outside the router get their own section, which explains urlDrift.
  • Three new lint rules: always-run-parent, lazy-component-eager and resolver-refetch.
  • "What happens if I go to X": preview-navigation and a What happens card predict a navigation from the live config without navigating or running app code. It covers redirects, guards in router order, lazy loads, resolvers, components, the title and the render mode.
  • Navigation stream: follow-navigations takes a since cursor and long-polls for up to 30 s.
  • HTTP calls per navigation: joins the HTTP inspector's calls for the same page, read only and redacted. explain-navigation lists them.

The new RPCs are in RPC_INSPECTOR and the new tools have AGENT_ENTRIES entries. route-current.ts is untouched.

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test:devtools: 3795 pass
  • pnpm test:panel: 877 pass
  • Docs updated (router, tools, security, popup-and-hub) and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm test:axe: 179 views. The new views were also checked with a one-off jsdom axe run, which found duplicate landmark labels; those are fixed.
  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Compare recorded navigations and review changes to routes, parameters, guards, and timing.
    • Preview how a URL matches routes, including redirects, parameters, processing steps, and render mode—without navigating.
    • View browser history events outside the router, associated HTTP calls, and warnings for redirects that may use query parameters.
    • Follow navigation updates and use new router tools for comparison, previews, and history tracking.
    • See additional router diagnostics, including checks for repeated data requests and route configuration issues.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded router guides and tool references to cover the new views, diagnostics, and tools.

Each navigation that ends now keeps the routes it activated (full path,
outlet, component, and redacted params and data as short JSON text), so
two navigations can be compared after the fact.

The new pangular:diff-navigations tool and router-diff RPC list what
changed between two navigations: URL and outcome, query params, route
params and data per route, the route and component in each outlet,
guard and resolver verdicts, phase timing, lazy loads and request
counts. The Routes tab gets a Compare view, and each navigation a
Compare button that opens it.

Refs #368
The redirect-from-query lint only looked back at recorded navigations.
The page now checks each navigation as it happens: a guard, resolver or
error handler redirect whose target is the value of a query param of
the URL being navigated to, and code that navigates to the value of a
return-URL query param of the current URL (clicked links don't count).

A flagged navigation carries queryRedirect with the param and the guard
or caller. It shows as an open redirect risk badge and row in the
Navigations view, posts a warning to the hub Messages dock once, adds a
line to explain-navigation, and makes redirect-from-query a warning
that names the guard or code.

Refs #368
The overlay now listens to the browser Navigation API (window.navigation)
navigate, navigatesuccess and navigateerror events, without intercepting
them, in a new router-platform-nav.ts module. An event that comes while
a router navigation runs, or just before one starts, is linked to it as
nav.platform. The other events are history changes the router did not
make; the report keeps the last 30 as platformNavigations.

The Navigations view shows a Navigation API row per navigation and a
History changes outside the router section, and inspect-route and
explain-navigation list the same changes, which explain urlDrift.

captureDiagnostics also records a withNavigationErrorHandler handler
that throws, with its message, before rethrowing.

Refs #368
Navigations counted fetch and XHR requests from PerformanceResourceTiming,
without status codes and with unrelated concurrent requests. The new
rpc/router-http.ts joins the HTTP inspector's client calls of the same
page instead, read only: the calls that started while a navigation ran,
and the ones that started after it ended, before the next navigation and
within 5 seconds.

explain-navigation lists them with method, URL, status and time, and
keeps the resource timing count when the HTTP inspector has none. The
new router-http RPC backs an HTTP calls button on each navigation in the
Navigations view.

Refs #368
…nents and resolver refetches

Three route lint rules from #349:

- always-run-parent: runGuardsAndResolvers 'always' on a parent route
with guards or resolvers, which run again on every navigation inside
it, query param and fragment changes included.
- lazy-component-eager: a loadComponent route whose component another
route outside any lazy route uses as an eager component, so the lazy
  import saves nothing.
- resolver-refetch: a navigation with resolvers that made a GET while it
ran and the same GET after it ended, from the HTTP inspector's calls
of the page (read through rpc/router-http.ts).

lint-routes and the router-lint RPC pass the page's HTTP calls; every
rule can be turned off with lint.rules.

Refs #368
Agents followed a login and redirect flow by calling explain-navigation
again and again. The server now numbers every navigation the pages
report in rpc/router-stream.ts, and hands a navigation out again when
its outcome, target or end changes.

The new pangular:follow-navigations tool returns what is new or changed
since a cursor, across pages or for one page, and can wait up to 30
seconds for the next navigation. It keeps the last 500 changes and says
how many a cursor missed. The tools page count test now accepts counts
of one hundred and more.

Refs #368
Predict only named the matched route. The new rpc/router-preview.ts
predicts a whole navigation from the live route config, without
navigating or running app code: it follows string redirects (params
filled in, query kept, loops and function redirects stop it), then lists
in the order the router runs them the canMatch guards, lazy children,
canDeactivate guards of the routes being left, canActivateChild and
canActivate guards, lazy components, resolvers, the components that
render and the title, with each route's source file and the render
mode from *.routes.server.ts.

Agents get it from pangular:preview-navigation, and the Config view
from a What happens button that shows it as a card (router-preview RPC).

Refs #368
Rebuilds extension/ui from app for the router Compare view, What happens
card, HTTP calls button, open redirect badge and Navigation API rows.

Walkthrough

The PR adds router navigation comparison, route previews, HTTP-call attribution, cursor-based navigation following, browser Navigation API capture, query-derived redirect reporting, and additional router lint findings. It connects these capabilities to the Live router UI, RPC and agent tools, tests, and documentation.

Changes: Router navigation diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture and validate router navigation data
packages/devtools/src/router*.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-tools.ts, app/src/pages/router-types.ts, app/src/pages/route-timeline.ts, related tests
Router reports now include redacted matched-route details and browser Navigation API events. The timeline and route inspection display external history events and navigation metadata. Thrown navigation error-handler values are recorded and rethrown.
Detect and report query-derived redirects
packages/devtools/src/router-open-redirect.ts, packages/devtools/src/router.ts, packages/devtools/src/hub-messages.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-config-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-tools.ts, app/src/pages/route-timeline.ts, related docs and tests
The router can flag redirects or imperative navigations whose targets match query parameters. The feed, lint output, navigation descriptions, and timeline report the parameter and redirect source.
Compare recorded navigations
packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-diff.ts, packages/devtools/src/router-matched.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, app/src/pages/route-diff.ts, app/src/pages/live-route.ts, related tests
The comparison API selects two navigations and reports changed and unchanged fields, including route data, query parameters, guards, timings, and available HTTP counts. The Live router adds a Compare tab and timeline action.
Attribute HTTP calls and add router lint findings
packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-http.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-config-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, app/src/pages/route-timeline.ts, related tests
HTTP calls are grouped into during-navigation and after-navigation windows and can appear in navigation explanations. Router lint adds checks for always-running parent guards or resolvers, eagerly loaded lazy components, and repeated resolver GET requests.
Preview route handling for a URL
packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-preview.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, app/src/pages/route-tree.ts, app/src/pages/route-preview.ts, related tests
The preview predicts static redirects, route matches, and ordered navigation steps from reported route configuration. The Config view displays the result, including stop reasons and render-mode details when available.
Stream navigation changes
packages/devtools/src/rpc/router-stream.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, related tests
The navigation stream records new or changed non-probe navigations, supports cursor reads and bounded waits, and clears entries when router pages or recordings are cleared.
Register and document router tools
packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/CHANGELOG.md, apps/docs/src/content/*, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/fixtures/agent-metadata-derived.json, scripts/e2e-mcp.mjs, extension/ui/*, scripts/panel-axe.mjs
The new router tools and RPC methods are registered and documented. Agent metadata, end-to-end cases, tool-count tests, extension asset references, and panel page-seeding retries are also updated.

Two small issues remain. After a malformed report, navigation entries can be retained for a page that was dropped. The route preview also shows resolvers and lazy component downloads in the wrong order. A changelog release-attribution note is carried forward but is likely moot. None of these affect application runtime.

Give diff-navigations, follow-navigations and preview-navigation
valid-arguments cases. Without one, preview-navigation was called with
no `url`, so its unknown-page case got the missing-url refusal instead
of the unknown-page answer. A unit test checks that answer.

102-102: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Split the "What happens" bullet into short sentences.

Line 102 is one long sentence. It lists about a dozen steps, the file names and the render mode. It breaks the rule "One idea per sentence. Keep sentences short and plain."

Split it so each sentence holds one idea. The ordered steps also read better as a list.

📝 Proposed rewrite

-- Click **What happens** for a card that predicts going to the URL from the live config, without navigating or running app code: the redirects it follows, the route chain and params, and then in order the `canMatch` guards, lazy children that download, `canDeactivate` guards of the routes being left, `canActivateChild` and `canActivate` guards, lazy components, resolvers, the components that render and the title. It also names the file each route is declared in and the render mode from `*.routes.server.ts`. Routes already active are marked, since they rerun guards only when their params change. The card stops at a function redirect, a redirect loop or a lazy route that has not loaded, and says why.

Return a continuation cursor when the answer is capped.

When retained entries exceed the answer cap, streamText truncates the entry list and removes Next cursor. The caller cannot use the documented continuation and must infer a cursor from an emitted line.

Paginate at complete entry boundaries and return a cursor for the last emitted entry.

says why the preview stopped.

Once later navigations displaced every stream entry of a page, pageIds() no longer listed it, so page expiry skipped clear() and the page's navigation signatures, which hold URLs, stayed in server memory. pageIds() now also lists pages that only have signatures.

Drop the input query for absolute redirects without a query.

For /old?filter=popular with redirectTo: '/dest?filter=:filter', Angular redirects to /dest?filter=popular. The preview instead reports /dest?filter=:filter in the hop and final URL.

On 651464b the axe job crashed with an unhandled route.fetch ECONNRESET from the local report server, with no accessibility violation found. The seed route now retries the fetch up to three times, and on a last failure aborts the request and marks the run failed instead of crashing.
…tion preview

Angular keeps the query and fragment only for a relative redirect; an absolute redirectTo takes them from itself. The preview carried the input query over in both cases. A test covers an absolute redirect with no query of its own.

Record navigations only for a retained router page.

A validated report with a deeply nested extra navigation property can make mergeRouterReport throw during serialization. The catch removes the page, but the stream then records its navigations. An unfiltered pangular:follow-navigations call can return those entries, and forget-router-page cannot clear them.

Keep the sweep before recording to avoid evicting live entries before stale entries are removed.

When merging a router report threw, the page was dropped, but its navigations still went into the stream, where nothing would ever clear them. They are now recorded only when the page is in routerPages.
…vigation preview

Angular runs resolvers before it loads the components of a navigation, so the preview listed the two phases in the wrong order. The test and the router and tools pages follow the new order.
