很长时间里，人们仰望恒星，却无从知晓它们究竟有多远。后来的办法不是飞向恒星，而是换一个位置观察它：地球绕太阳公转，相隔半年的两次观测相距约三亿公里，近处的恒星相对于遥远背景会产生极微小的视位置变化。量出这一丝视差，便能推算出它的距离。

不必抵达群星，也可以丈量群星。

For a long time, people looked up at the stars with no way of knowing how far away they were. The answer was not to fly to them, but to observe from another position: as Earth orbits the Sun, two observations six months apart are about 300 million km apart, and a nearby star shows a tiny shift in apparent position against the distant background. Measure that parallax, and you can work out its distance.

You need not reach the stars to measure them.
