Why

The standalone PolygonZone tool has been replaced by the polygon zone editor built into Roboflow Workflows. The new docs page, Draw Polygon Zones and Lines (roboflow/docs#391, #392), targets the search terms this subdomain ranks for, so the subdomain should send its visitors and its ranking there.

We couldn't get a DNS or CDN redirect set up. But the site is served by GitHub Pages from main at /, so a redirect page in this repo is enough. No DNS change is needed, and the existing CNAME stays.

What changed

  • index.html is now a minimal redirect page. It has an instant <meta http-equiv="refresh">, <link rel="canonical"> and <meta name="robots" content="noindex">. It also calls location.replace() (so the old page doesn't stay in browser history) and shows a fallback link.
  • 404.html is an exact copy. GitHub Pages serves it for any missing path, so deep links and old asset URLs also land on the docs page.
  • script.js and styles.css are deleted. Nothing uses them any more, and git history keeps them.
  • README.md is down to a few lines pointing to Workflows and the docs page.
  • CNAME, LICENSE.md, CONTRIBUTING.md and .github/ are unchanged.

Meta refresh vs 301

GitHub Pages can't send a real HTTP 301. Google treats an instant (0-second) meta refresh as a permanent redirect, and the canonical tag points to the same URL. The result is the same as a 301 for indexing.

Testing

  • https://docs.roboflow.com/workflows/build/draw-polygon-zones returns 200. #392 renamed the slug; the old .../build/draw-lines-and-zones URL now returns 404, so the redirect points to the new slug.
  • Served the branch locally the way Pages does (the file if it exists, otherwise 404.html with status 404). Then loaded /, /?1, /index.html, /some/deep/link?x=1#frag, /script.js and /styles.css in headless Chromium, with JavaScript on and off. All 12 loads ended on the docs page.

After merge

Pages rebuilds from main within a few minutes. Then every URL on polygonzone.roboflow.com goes to the docs page, including / and any query string or deep link. roboflow.com/polygonzone and roboflow.github.io/polygonzone/ already redirect to the subdomain, so they follow too. Over the next few weeks Google should drop the subdomain from its index and pass its ranking to the docs page.

PolygonZone has been replaced by the polygon zone editor in Roboflow
Workflows. index.html and 404.html now send every path on the subdomain
to https://docs.roboflow.com/workflows/build/draw-polygon-zones via an
instant meta refresh, location.replace() and a canonical tag. The old
tool's script.js and styles.css are removed; they stay in git history.
