Summary

pipecat-moss 0.0.3, the version on PyPI, cannot be imported on a fresh install. It pins inferedge-moss, which no longer exports AddDocumentsOptions, and it imports the openai_llm_context module that pipecat-ai 1.8 removed. The source here already moved to moss and LLMContextFrame but was never released. This PR adds what the docs need to teach one service per process, and fixes a frame bug.

  • cache_path on MossRetrievalService, passed to the MossClient. A load in a new process reads an unchanged index from disk instead of downloading it. Requires moss 1.14.0 or later; the lock moves to 1.19.0.
  • load_index loads each index once per service. Later and concurrent calls wait for the same load, a bot that disconnects mid-load does not cancel it, and a failed load is retried by the next call. auto_refresh is passed through, so a long-lived process follows new index versions.
  • Frames are forwarded unchanged. The processor rebuilt LLMContextFrame and LLMMessagesUpdateFrame, dropping speculation (a speculative run then reaches the LLM as a normal turn) and run_llm. It now pushes the frame it received. This issue was first reported in fix: move off the LLM context frames pipecat removed in 1.8 pipecat-moss#5.
  • Credentials fall back to MOSS_PROJECT_ID and MOSS_PROJECT_KEY as the README says. Missing credentials raise ValueError instead of failing inside the native client.
  • The example creates one service per process and starts the load while the transport connects. The README and CHANGELOG (under Unreleased) are updated.

Notes

  • Releasing needs a version above 0.0.5 or a publish of 0.0.5. Neither is part of this PR.
  • usemoss/pipecat-moss is an older copy of this package, and its open PRs target that repo.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added persistent caching for Moss indexes with optional automatic refresh.
    • Concurrent requests for the same index now share one loading operation.
    • Added environment-variable fallbacks for Moss credentials and clearer missing-credential errors.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Index-loading failures now propagate correctly and can be retried.
    • Preserved message context and frame properties during retrieval processing.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup guidance, configuration options, usage examples, and compatibility requirements.

…rames unchanged

MossRetrievalService takes cache_path and falls back to MOSS_PROJECT_ID and
MOSS_PROJECT_KEY as the README documents. load_index loads each index once
per service and shares in-flight loads, so one service per process serves
every bot. MossIndexProcessor forwards the frame it received, which keeps
LLMContextFrame.speculation and LLMMessagesUpdateFrame.run_llm. Requires
moss 1.14.0 or later.

📝 Walkthrough

The MOSS package adds persistent index caching, credential fallbacks, and shared asynchronous index loading with optional auto-refresh. The demo starts loading before transport creation and awaits the task before pipeline setup. The index processor updates and forwards the original message frame.

… setup fails

The README snippet uses MOSS_CACHE_PATH with a ./moss-cache default and
awaits load_index inside an async bot. The demo cancels and gathers its
load task if transport setup fails first, and a shared load's failure no
longer needs a caller to retrieve it.

@cubic-dev-ai Thanks for the review. All three issues are fixed in 6714894: the README cache path is writable, the README snippet awaits inside an async bot, and the demo cleans up its load task when transport setup fails.

🤖 Addressed by Claude Code

@rafaelbeckel The three fixes are in place in 6714894 and they look right:

  • Writable cache path — cache_path=os.getenv("MOSS_CACHE_PATH", "./moss-cache") in the README, and the .env.example comment points production at persistent storage.
  • Await inside an async bot — the README snippet now awaits load_index(..., auto_refresh=True) inside run_bot, matching the demo.
  • Load-task cleanup on setup failure — the demo's finally cancels and gathers moss_loading if create_transport raises first.

One thing worth confirming since it's easy to get wrong: the cleanup actually preserves the shared load, not just in spirit. moss_loading is the load_index coroutine, and its await asyncio.shield(task) means cancelling it only stops the waiter — the inner _load task stays alive in self._loads for the next bot, and its done-callback consumes any exception so it can be retried. So the comment in the demo is accurate.

No further changes needed from my side.

@rafaelbeckel Thanks for the fix. The README now uses MOSS_CACHE_PATH with a ./moss-cache default and recommends persistent storage in production. This addresses the cache-path concern.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Raise the minimum moss version to 1.19.0.

MossRetrievalService always passes cache_path to MossClient. The declared moss>=1.14.0 range still permits released pre-1.19 clients whose constructor does not accept that keyword. An installation that resolves one of those versions can fail during service construction with an unexpected-keyword TypeError.

Raise the lower bound to moss>=1.19.0, or implement explicit compatibility handling for older clients.

MossRetrievalService reuses the existing task after an index loads. If the first call uses auto_refresh=False, a later call with auto_refresh=True does not enable refresh. State that the first call's options apply, or update the service to support upgrading an existing load.

@coderabbitai On the two outside-diff items from review 5607749636:

  1. Raise the minimum moss to 1.19.0: not changed. MossClient(cache_path=...) shipped in moss 1.14.0 (its 2026-09-29 changelog, under Added), so moss>=1.14.0 already covers everything this package uses.
  2. First-call rule for auto_refresh: added in 3f2d495. The README's load_index entry now says the first call for an index sets auto_refresh and later calls cannot change it.

@rafaelbeckel Thanks for the clarification.

  1. Minimum version: The Python SDK changelog confirms that MossClient(cache_path=...) shipped in moss 1.14.0. Keeping moss>=1.14.0 is correct for this API. My recommendation to require 1.19.0 was unnecessary, and I withdraw it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retain the first auto_refresh option when retrying a failed load.

If the first load_index(index_name, auto_refresh=...) call fails, the next call replaces the failed task and passes its own auto_refresh value to MossClient.load_index. This allows a later call to change the setting, contrary to the documented first-call contract. Keep the first option associated with the index when replacing a failed task.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff item in review 5607803304 (keep the first auto_refresh when retrying a failed load): not changed. A failed load never installed any option, so there is nothing to keep, and the retry's options are the first ones that take effect. As of 227331b the README says this: the first successful load sets auto_refresh, and a retry after a failed load uses the retry's options.

@rafaelbeckel Thanks for the clarification. I verified that load_index replaces a failed task and passes the retry’s auto_refresh value to the new load. The README now documents this behavior.

My recommendation to preserve auto_refresh from a failed load was unnecessary. I withdraw that finding.

Learning: In usemoss/moss, MossRetrievalService.load_index in packages/pipecat-moss/src/pipecat_moss/moss_retrieval_service.py uses the retry's options after a failed load. A failed load does not establish a persistent auto_refresh setting. The first successful load establishes that setting, as documented in packages/pipecat-moss/README.md. Do not require retries to preserve auto_refresh from a failed attempt.
