varun salian — backend systems, cross-platform apps

Seven years building backend systems that need to stay up — user services at 99.99%, event-driven pipelines, compliance plumbing across thirty-odd microservices.

Then I go home and write Flutter.

Debrify Debrify — 504 stars, 59,053 downloads, 7 platforms, 2,517 commits, 45 releases. Android, Android TV, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, tvOS. Cloud storage, WebDAV, IPTV, Trakt / Simkl, downloads, subtitles.

It started as a way to pull my own accounts and home servers into one place, instead of a different app on every screen in the house. It's since grown a website, a subreddit and a Discord full of people who care about the details — which has been the best part by a distance.

stremio-addon-importer — a small browser extension that exports your installed add-ons as JSON. Handy when you're moving between setups.

Where I've worked Career timeline: Happiest Minds 2019–2021 (Software Engineer to Senior), Oracle 2021–2022 (SDE 2), Jio Platforms 2022–2023 (SDE 2), Opendoor 2024–2025 (SDE 2), LegalZoom 2025–2026 (SDE 3), with Debrify built alongside since August 2025.
A few things I'm glad I got to build
  • CCPA compliance at Opendoor, as the only developer on it — RelyanceAI wired into 30+ microservices, with Kafka handling access and deletion requests so nothing was dropped and everything stayed auditable. Saved ~$30K in vendor cost and headed off $50K+ in penalties.
  • KOPS → Amazon EKS for production services, taking 25% off the infrastructure bill along the way.
  • The User Details Service at Jio — horizontally scalable, 99.99% availability, comfortable through 3× promotional traffic spikes on GKE.
  • Code review standards that stuck around after I moved on, and three engineers I really enjoyed mentoring.
Toolkit Toolkit. Languages: Java, Go, Dart, Kotlin, Python, JavaScript. Backend: Spring Boot, Kafka, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, Redis. Infrastructure: Kubernetes, Docker, AWS (EKS), GCP (GKE). Data and client: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Flutter, Media3 / ExoPlayer.

Happily busy with my own projects at the moment — but I always enjoy hearing about an interesting problem.
