Summary

Turns the repo into a presentable GitHub landing page without touching the simulator or the statistics. Every image is still a deterministic replay of a runs/val.npz episode; the numbers in the README are unchanged and still come from astraeus report.

hero

Renderer (astraeus/render.py) – visual quality upgrades, all deterministic in (x, seed):

  • terrain: 4-octave value_noise regolith texture with bump normals (octaves faded with distance to avoid aliasing), horizon-based ambient occlusion, darkened wheel ruts along _offset_path(path_true, ±HALF_WID)
  • rover: MLI seams, solar-cell grid, wheel tread, computed in rover-local coordinates
  • lighting: ACES-style _filmic tone curve replaces Reinhard, faint blue earthshine ambient, vignette, two-class star field
  • new cinematic camera (low three-quarter front view); CAMERAS now has 5 entries, CLI/UI pick it up
  • render_frame(..., supersample=k) renders at k² pixels and Lanczos-downsamples for stills (quality still means the fast interactive path)
  • draw_caption(im, scene, subtitle=) – a clean lower-third (wordmark, outcome, 8-vector, seed) for documentation; the technical HUD is unchanged and still the default

Assets (scripts/make_showcase.py → docs/img/) – hero.png (1920×1080, 2× SS), gallery_{stuck,tip_over,collision,nav_miss,success}.png, demo.webp (40-frame chase replay). Episode picks are photogenic (low-but-not-grazing sun, light dust), explicitly not statistical; the script prints episode index + seed per file and docs/VALIDATION.md §2.4 records them.

tip nav

README rewritten as a landing page: hero, badges, gallery + demo, "why this exists", stage table, dims/priors/results, live world model, renderer, Isaac/ROS2/Reactor with the same unverified-runtime caveats, limitations, research, citing.

Repo hygiene: .github/workflows/ci.yml (ruff · compileall · pytest · selftest on py3.10/3.12, then a uvicorn smoke test hitting /api/health, /api/simulate, /api/whatif/frame.png), CITATION.cff, CONTRIBUTING.md (determinism + provenance contracts).

Verification

  • ruff, compileall, pytest (30 passed), astraeus selftest (19/19) all green locally
  • CI smoke-test commands run locally against uvicorn on a spare port: health OK, simulate OK, 320×180 frame OK
  • Not re-verified: Isaac Sim / ROS 2 runtime, Reactor provider (unchanged, still documented as unverified)

Note for the author

CITATION.cff / README BibTeX use "Vinujan, S." inferred from the commit email – please correct the name if that is wrong.

…ing-page README, CI, CITATION

- render.py: multi-octave regolith texture with bump normals, horizon AO, wheel ruts,
rover MLI/solar-cell/tread detail, filmic tone map + vignette, two-class stars,
  new 'cinematic' camera, supersample= for anti-aliased stills, draw_caption() lower-third
- scripts/make_showcase.py: deterministic hero.png (1920x1080, 2x SS), 5-outcome gallery,
40-frame chase demo.webp; prints episode/seed for each asset
- README rewritten as a GitHub landing page (hero, badges, gallery, demo, results, limitations)
- .github/workflows/ci.yml: ruff, compileall, pytest, selftest on py3.10/3.12 + server smoke test
- CITATION.cff, CONTRIBUTING.md; VALIDATION/ARCHITECTURE updated for the new assets and cameras

Chromium end-to-end test of the cinematic renderer + UI (recorded), then targeted retest of the two follow-up commits.

All five camera views render and fit the pane; cinematic shows the low three-quarter rover composition; sun/dust what-if updates and six-panel contact sheets work. Regression checks passed: WebGL world, P3 n/a / out-of-support, elite replay, named save/reset/load (6400→0→6400).

Found and fixed during testing:

  • camera=bogus returned 500 → now 400 listing valid cameras on all five render endpoints (d47178c)
  • at 640px the HUD footer overlapped the outcome title → footer fields now drop from the right until they fit (68bee36)
Cinematic what-if in the UI 640px HUD before the fix
Cinematic UI Footer overlap
Timings and coverage
  • Fast episode frames: 1.44–1.89 s; full-quality cinematic: 4.68 s
  • Cinematic what-if frames: 1.38–2.02 s; what-if simulation alone ~60–170 ms
  • Contact sheet: 11.24 s (previous run: 10.8–12.2 s)
  • No JavaScript errors
  • Not tested: supersample= / draw_caption() (script-only), non-Chromium browsers, Isaac/ROS 2/Reactor runtimes
