Summary

  • Stop credential status and TTS/voice output from revealing key fragments; handle short keys and legacy-file save errors.
  • Only count/prune Celeste-marked spill directories; leave unmarked legacy/other directories untouched. Reject reserved pruned session names and case variants instead of remapping them to colliding session names.
  • Read .gitignore from the pinned codegraph root during Build/Update, not a replaceable workspace path.

Verification

  • Each issue has a regression test that failed before its fix.
  • go test ./... -count=1, Go-1.26.9 golangci-lint, and govulncheck ./... pass locally; govulncheck reports zero reachable vulnerabilities (see scan limitations).
  • Focused context/loop race and pure-Go tests, Windows/Linux cross-builds pass locally. Requesting full-CI to run on macOS and Windows.

Scope and remaining work

Refs #435; prerequisite for #437.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • API key status displays now show only “set” or “not set,” without revealing key fragments.
    • Spill data is pruned and included in quota calculations only when its directory is verified as owned. Unmarked legacy data remains readable but is not automatically pruned or counted.
    • Reserved session names are rejected regardless of letter case.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Git ignore rules remain tied to the workspace root opened for a build or update, even if the workspace path changes.
    • Saving a legacy API key now reports errors instead of silently ignoring them.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes pin codegraph Gitignore reads to the open workspace root, remove key fragments from credential status responses, report secrets-file save failures, and add ownership-marker and reserved-name checks to spill creation, accounting, recall, and pruning.

Changes: Pinned Gitignore reads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse Gitignore from the pass root
cmd/celeste/codegraph/detect.go, cmd/celeste/codegraph/index.go, cmd/celeste/codegraph/open_pass_test.go
Build and Update read .gitignore through the open pass root and parse its contents with a shared helper. A test checks indexing when the workspace path is replaced after the pass opens.

Credential status and configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hide API-key fragments in status displays
cmd/celeste/main.go, cmd/celeste/tools/builtin/tts.go, cmd/celeste/tui/app.go, cmd/celeste/credential_status_test.go, cmd/celeste/tools/builtin/tts_test.go
Credential status displays report whether a key is set without revealing key fragments. Tests check the status output.
Report config set-key save results
cmd/celeste/commands/commands.go, cmd/celeste/commands/credential_status_test.go
config set-key returns a failure when saving the secrets file fails. Successful responses do not include the key. Tests check saved configuration and failure responses.

Spill ownership and reserved names

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mark and validate spill-directory ownership
cmd/celeste/context/limits.go, cmd/celeste/context/limits_test.go, cmd/celeste/context/spill_ownership_test.go
New spill directories receive an ownership marker. Existing directories are accepted only when ownership checks pass. Tests cover marker permissions and invalid or missing markers.
Count and prune owned spill directories
cmd/celeste/context/limits.go, cmd/celeste/context/spill_limits_test.go, cmd/celeste/context/spill_ownership_test.go
Spill accounting and pruning exclude unowned directories and the ownership marker. Tests cover marked sessions, unmarked legacy directories, and pruning behavior.
Reject reserved compaction-store names
cmd/celeste/context/limits.go, cmd/celeste/context/spill_limits_test.go, cmd/celeste/context/spill_reserved_test.go, cmd/celeste/loop/spill_name_test.go
Spill and recall operations reject reserved names case-insensitively. Tests check case variants and verify that pruned-session spills remain distinct.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to f295c

Legacy credential-save failures are reported without echoing the tested key fragments. No actionable merge-blocking risk is established in the supplied changes.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f295c

The changes generally reduce credential disclosure and accidental deletion. One compatibility edge can silently include files previously excluded from analysis. Its demonstrated scope is local; remote disclosure or additional privileges were not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Build and Update now reject even an in-workspace symlinked .gitignore through readIn, but walkSourceFiles discards that error and continues without ignore filtering. The base used os.ReadFile and could honor the same link. A workspace using this previously readable configuration can therefore add formerly excluded source symbols and tokens to its persistent index. Hidden-path and supported-language restrictions still apply; no out-of-workspace read or remote disclosure was demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified filtering regression is bounded to otherwise indexable regular source files within the selected workspace and their derived local index records. Hidden paths and fixed excluded directories remain filtered independently. Evidence does not establish cross-user, cross-tenant, or remote exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A previously readable linked .gitignore can now be rejected without aborting analysis. Its exclusions then disappear, allowing matching source metadata into the index. This is a conditional privacy-control regression, not evidence that an attacker gained filesystem authority or that credentials were transmitted.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Spill ownership validation checks a real directory, its opened identity, a regular marker of the expected size, the marker's opened identity, and exact contents. This narrows automatic deletion eligibility compared with name-based ownership; the fixed marker is not authentication against a process already able to modify the directory.
  • observed — Legacy credential persistence continues to serialize the key through an owner-only atomic file replacement. The changed command response no longer derives text from the key, and its legacy-save failure test checks that the returned message excludes the full key and tested prefix and suffix.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal spill creation, quota checking, and writing retain process and filesystem locking. Marker creation failures return without rollback; an incomplete marker will fail later ownership checks. The production loop handles spill errors with a bounded in-memory result and a notice that recall is unavailable, rather than forwarding the entire oversized result.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Distinguish an absent ignore file from an existing policy file rejected by the confined reader. Preserve pinned-root confinement while making the latter condition explicit instead of silently disabling its exclusions.

Add a failure-path test for config set-key.

The command tests cover successful SaveSecrets calls only. Add a test that makes the secrets-file write fail and asserts that Execute returns Success == false without exposing the API key. This test will detect a regression to ignoring the SaveSecrets error.
