Problem and result

  • Codex test fixtures assumed every Windows Git distribution contained mingw64/bin/curl.exe. Retain that delegate when present and fall back to native Windows SystemRoot/System32/curl.exe only when the Git candidate is missing.
  • Preserve absolute/canonical/regular .exe validation, explicit reviewed Bash/jq selection, and hermetic child-tool resolution. No ambient Windows PATH discovery or production hook, dispatcher, alias, CI, or timeout changes.
  • Add Windows-only selection/rejection regressions, prior behavior checks for seven other tools, and an actual native-curl request against an isolated loopback server. Metadata-marker files are never executed.

Closes #2159

Verification

Draft WIP: focused independent verification and native review are now complete for this exact head. The affected package still has the baseline dispatcher EOF failure documented below.

  • Windows/amd64, verified Go 1.26.10, real Bash 5.2.26, reviewed jq 1.8.2 and native curl 8.10.1; isolated configuration/data/temp state and private Go caches. No global installation.
  • New selection regressions observed RED before the helper change (Go exit 1).
  • go test -json -mod=readonly ./plugin -run '^(TestCodexWindowsCurlFixtureResolution|TestCodexWindowsOtherFixtureToolsPreserveSelection|TestCodexWindowsNativeCurlFallbackRequest|TestLifecycleScriptsUseCanonicalProjectResolution)$' -count=1: exit 0, 33 PASS events, no skips. Includes actual native curl HTTP and the existing lifecycle consumer.
  • go test -json -mod=readonly ./plugin -count=1: exit 1, 537 PASS events, six skips, one failure: TestCodexWindowsBashHookDispatcherBackground exceeded its existing 12-second EOF deadline (exit=true EOF=false). No budget increase or dispatcher patch.
  • One isolated go test -json -mod=readonly ./plugin -run '^TestCodexWindowsBashHookDispatcherBackground$' -count=1 per variant reproduced that same failure on unmodified main 51bcdba8ffc930bd7b65f4c99446e5cabcc115fe and the candidate, both exit 1, no skips, without the original-launch demonstration override. Comparison completed; this is not a green-package claim.
  • Independent verification of immutable commit aabbb9e014f21c60f547fd0ec6cad91ca359a976 / tree c4fe14ee90d22e621cc095ba4276f5a6b3256445: exactly one go test -json -mod=readonly ./plugin -run '^(TestCodexWindowsCurlFixtureResolution|TestCodexWindowsOtherFixtureToolsPreserveSelection|TestCodexWindowsNativeCurlFallbackRequest)$' -count=1, exit 0, three root tests, 16 PASS events, zero FAIL, zero SKIP, empty stderr. Live source, snapshot and go.mod/go.sum remained unchanged. Actual native curl HTTP execution passed separately from metadata-marker selection tests. No candidate-caused blocker identified.
  • Earlier independent attempts stopped before any Go test because of preparation/transport/evidence-retention issues. They remain incomplete history, not retroactive passes. A fresh explicitly authorized file-backed attempt supplied the successful independent result above; all its private evidence was retained. No fixture or production code changed during verification.
  • Full-module tests, E2E and lint were not run locally or claimed. Hosted CI must be assessed separately for the current head; local focused success does not establish a green hosted or Windows full-module baseline.

Risk (if applicable)

  • Trusted fixture executable selection is security-relevant. Existing Git selection and executable guards remain unchanged; malformed candidates still fail closed. Approved issue and reproduction/non-goals.
  • At initial publication, native assessment reported medium risk and review was not due under budget; executable-selection concerns required independent verification. A subsequent explicit review of exact target sha256:3290690ade4f731862d2eedc1f5751e505cc08e1a5e65159d6f7551cd3809759 completed approved across risk, resilience and reliability, and its exact native acknowledgement consumed authority (review-60b6de453793a3de). This outside view does not replace functional checks or authorize delivery.
  • The pre-existing Windows EOF observation is recorded for diagnosis and classification under #1891, outside this curl-fixture scope. This PR remains Draft; Ready requires a separate explicit decision and current passing required checks. The independent focused proof is now present, but the affected-package result remains failed as recorded above. No automatic Ready or merge transition. This does not change PR ci(windows): add observational full-module baseline wiring #2156, close parent feat(ci): establish full Windows Go suite coverage with a staged required-check rollout #1891, or establish a green Windows full-module baseline.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • On Windows, fixture requests can now use the system-provided curl when the Git-provided version is unavailable. The selection avoids relying on other curl executables found through PATH, and preserves existing selection behavior for other fixture tools.

Retain the existing Git curl delegate and use the Windows OS candidate only when that layout is missing. Keep executable validation unchanged and pin the fallback with Windows regressions.

WIP: focused checks pass; the plugin package retains an EOF failure also reproduced on main, and independent functional verification is unavailable. Refs Gentleman-Programming#2159.

Walkthrough

The Windows Codex fixture selector now falls back to System32\curl.exe when the Git mingw64 curl candidate is absent. New Windows tests cover candidate selection, failure cases, native curl execution, and unchanged selection of other fixture tools.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the coding requirements in #2159. codexIntentTool keeps the Git mingw64/bin/curl.exe candidate and uses %SystemRoot%\\System32\\curl.exe only when the Git candidate is absent. It does not search ambient PATH. Existing absolute, canonical, regular-file, and .exe validation remains in codexIntentExecutable. The Windows tests cover the existing Git layout, the missing-mingw64 layout, invalid candidates, relative SystemRoot, and no trusted candidate. They also preserve selection for Bash, jq, and five other tools. TestCodexWindowsNativeCurlFallbackRequest executes native curl against an isolated loopback server. The reported focused verification passed, including TestLifecycleScriptsUseCanonicalProjectResolution. The reported full-package EOF failure is reproduced on the merge base and candidate, so it does not establish a new unmet #2159 requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #2159. The production-code change is limited to the Windows test-fixture curl selector. The added Windows tests verify selector behavior, validation failures, child-tool selection, and the native curl consumer. No production hooks, dispatcher, aliases, CI, timeout, or unrelated package changes are present in the whole-PR diff.

Exercise the native fallback through codexHandoffEnv.

On Windows, TestCodexHandoffTransportBoundary resolves curl from the actual Git usr/bin directory. It does not force mingw64/bin/curl.exe to be absent, so its positive request may use Git curl instead of the native fallback. TestCodexWindowsNativeCurlFallbackRequest forces the missing layout but executes the selected path directly. Add a Windows handoff case with no mingw64 curl, then run the request through the isolated wrapper so the test covers native selection, Windows path conversion, and delegated execution.
